- Technically this is not really standing out in a positive way... 20 MB for this music is quite a lot, and the images are indeed very simple.
Even designwise, there are already a lot of other demos with a similar alternative style out there, like chimera, kolonija or whatever, which are supposed to create some interesting associations.
So why thumb this up? There is a third aspect, which is actually quite important to me: I liked it! Somehow this has been the most impressing art demo I have seen so far, maybe because it was simply so extremly minimalistic, maybe because the soundtrack was actually very well made, maybe because the color shifting was very cleverly done... I don't know.
If you do not enjoy watching this, thumb it down. I think this product is really a matter of taste, and it would be very hard to find arguments to convince anyone, who simply "does not get it", why this can actually be very good. - rulezadded on the 2004-03-02 04:36:51

- I especially liked the guitar, but as others have pointed out, it sounds as if it is not affected by the same hall effect that the other instruments are. I also think the female voice should be more disorted, like being pitch shifted upwards about two-three semitones.
Nevertheless, the music is one of best I ever heard in a demo.
And the visuals are also very good, which makes this simply a great demo! - rulezadded on the 2004-02-27 04:18:55

- Really, when I watched this for the first time I thought for a second that this may actually terminate any further attempts of producing a visually stunning Intro, since this proves once and for all that there are not really any limits... Obviously that is not true, but this kind of graphical realism has yet to be beaten in 64k.
Considering this, I am a bit surprised that this is relatively unpopular, especially compared to FR-08. For example, I do not understand what is supposed to bad about the music. The softsynth features some relatively complex non-sawtooth tone colors, and the tune is really a matter of taste. And, from what I know, 3D-models that resemble real-life objects are a lot harder to compress to a few lines of code than nice abstract forms.
When I heard "Microsoft Sam" introducing the intro, I thought "hey, that's a funny idea", instead of "how lame, now everyone is going to do it" or even "cheater", which is apparently not the case.
I think the walking animation of the robot is especially amazing. It sure must have been a lot of work to make it appear so smooth in 64k.
Designwise this could be better, the effects were so dense that each one filled about one frame on my "slow" Radeon 8500, but (or even because of that) it fulfills the main goal that even most top intros have - "look at how much we can pack in 64k" - very well.
Using Aardbei's texture generator... Well, I cannot judge that, but there were not that many textures in this intro, so I think it is not that big of a crime.
Basically, I do not see any weak points in this intro, but instead some outstandingly strong ones, so it definitely deserves a thumb up.

- 64k Windows A Place Called Universe by Conspiracy [web]
- Well, the only program I am running in the background is Powerstrip. At 1024x768 the slowdown is so intense that it is more like a short, but great FPS boost every few seconds. It starts in the "love me" scene. In PG it starts with first scene on the ground of the planet. The only scenes from then on that run well are the first pipe scene, and the credits-landscape.
I also tested it on another computer, a P4 2.53Ghz, Radeon 8500, Win XP and the exact same problems occured. Since many people have XP, it is probably something with the graphic card, because I also use updated drivers. Is it possible that you are using a certain kind of rendering in these slow scenes which the Radeon 8500 is not able to handle well? - isokadded on the 2004-02-12 01:33:21

- Even though some scenes look a bit like randomly thrown together abstract objects, they fit very well, and everything else in this intro (the music, the mood, the lyrics, the design and more) is really great, and that in just 54k!
The mentioned similarities with Heaven Seven are probably the music which sets up a similar mood and the lyrics that have more meaning than they appear to have at first.
By the way, towards the end, the frame rate drops below 7 FPS for a short time every two seconds. Strangely, once when I had anisotropic filtering enabled, this was not the case, but I was unable to reproduce it. Even more strangly, it is exactly the same with Project Genesis. I have a Radeon 8500/1.3 Ghz Athlon. Is there anyone who knows what may cause this problem? - rulezadded on the 2004-02-10 22:46:19

- I think the reason Heaven Seven is so popular is because it shows great programming skills and has a very good design, so that basically everyone gets something out of it. Contrary to my first impression, even the lyrics make a lot of sense. The way I understand them, they refer to some essential questions, humans may ask about heaven, for which there are no answers. There is also a topic with some interesting replies about Heaven Seven: http://www.pouet.net/topic.php?which=755.
In my opinion this is the single best demo of all demos I know. Some recent intros may appear more technically stunning, but design- and contentwise these do not come close to Heaven Seven. - rulezadded on the 2004-02-10 06:06:37
