fascinating and mysteriuos evolution of a field of pixels, like watching the wind pushing the desert sand into new patterns. Requires a bit of patience to watch tho. Thumbs up for an alternative demo style. Very fresh!

a) If you though chimera sucked, this 'demo' will make you want to kill somebody.

b) If you're gonna make somebody download 21 megs please tell them beforehand that the prod is 'different'. Did I say 21 megs? yes, that's where we stand today, 21 fucking megs for 3 jpegs, an ambient sound and nothing happening

c) I stopped watching after 4 minutes. Can't take any more.

d) What kind of drugs do you have to take to enjoy this? Please send me a sample.

e) take this thing to a museum. maybe people will enjoy it there. I don't think many sceners will

f) You've managed to really piss me off.

the filesize is too big for a 'demo' imo... should've been added as a 'wild'

Mhmmm.

Let's say it this way: It's really no demo, it's pretty much the opposite of a demo. It's like chimera, only in 2d, even more abstract and even more lengthy.

And I guess it's part of their plan to piss people off, with such a piece.

excellent the way the visual, noisy patterns move and refine themselves in subtle yet funny ways with the music.. it would work
pretty well as an installation too

a kind of picture of the ubiquituous electromagnetic rain we are drowned into.

really, a shame the music is not generated in realtime like the visuals

so this is how it works nowadays right?
you code some brutally lame effect, use totally empty textures, cram out a completely senseless movement formula, feed it timeInSec * 0.0001f, shove an ambient track behind it.. AND VOILA, A NEW PIECE OF "ART" FOR ALL THESE GODDAMN "ART" FAGGOTS.

jesus christ.

i totally disagree with you Plek:
nowadays demoscene seems to be lead by a bunch of self masturbating idiots thinking than anyone unable to perform radiosity-shadowmaps-on-a-12-pipelined-multitextured-scene-with-100k-of-dynamic-vertex-with-VAR lost the right to pretend the demoscene throne.

well
in that case..

let's all stop coding,
let's all stop making models,
let's all stop making scenes,
let's all stop making decent graphics,
let's all stop using/making normal music.

let's give up what once was a target of the demoscene.. high quality real-time multimedia. progression. let's throw away all our fucking geforce's and reinstall our tseng labs et6k's. let's fuck polygons and plot a few random pixels. let's fuck all we have learned and code dumb stuff, for it is art and even teh futare, or so it seems.

let's just alltogether make some fucking boring "artsy" bullshit. and be laughed at even harder, as a 'scene'.

the scene won't stop making special effect dance music videos anytime soon, so don't worry about it. Some of us (for example) go to the movies to see more than just how elaborate and impressive the design+effects+photography+screenplay+performance etc. etc. is. A film can have all of that 10x and still be a totally uninteresting and forgettable piece. While an amateur film with no technically stellar aspects can be captivating to the point of transfixion.

anyway, cool to see another "offensive" (in a good way) prod hit the scene

I don't really know what to say here.

As an ambient piece of "art" (oh come on, please leave this term to real artists, ok? :), it's quite ok. The slow transitions and the soundtrack are thoughtfully done (and surprisingly un-random at times), and it even has a somewhat emotional character for me...

... if it weren't for the complete ignorance of all which is demoscene culture. I definitely agree that the scene tends to get stuck in thisandthat style for at least a few years each, and there's definitely need for different, offensive prods - but only if those different prods don't forget about some basic principles of realtime and optimization. Heck, why the fuck 21MB of MP3 for a few samples which could have fit into a 1MB MO3? There isn't a single sound that justifies the usage of a streaming audio format over a tracked one in the whole thing. You could have gotten the whole thing to 2MB instead of 22 and woudln't even notice a difference - apart from the fact that there would be a lot more downloaders and a lot less flamers.

for me, teh futare si elsewehre, but as long as THIS doesn't get mainstream, why not. Let the pigface speak.
added on the 2002-11-11 13:52:02 by kb_ kb_

i think most of us are developed enough to recognize a quality movie by other aspects than those you stated.

on the other hand, there is a *subtle* difference between a movie (in whatever form) and this useless piece, merely consisting of uninteresting pixel patterns. i ask *you*, what is the MESSAGE of this?

i'd like to sum op a few facts over again:

- this is not impressive from a technical point of view
- this does not offer a broad spectrum of audiovisual events, on the contrary, it offerns only a single one
- apart from the music perhaps, it doesn't require any talent to slap this together
- it bores the shit out of any 'regular' non 'art-faggot' person

i'm starting to get this feeling that some of you think it's hip to propagate empty bullshit. you all seem to discover some kind of message in those minimalistic pieces of bullshit... but could any of you describe this?
i guess not, since you're just saying so.
forcing yourself to enjoy.

it's not bad to be square: it's hip (as huey lewis stated in the track 'hip to be square', available on his album fore! released in 1986, if i recall correctly).

if people need to be *moved*, something needs to *happen*. and when nothing happens, it's just a matter of making up some useless argument and pretend you were halfway interested in what was presented to you.

i'm not saying this to propagate all lolly-pop-flavoured mainstream demos or intros. i'm *surely* not saying that my own hacks are a typical display of how it should be done, but there are a few good productions out there that really *mean* something, are pretty (which can and will be seconded by a lot of people, even people not involved with this scene), without them being minimalistic. minimalism can offer some sort of beauty.. but not in this way.

I don't really know what to say ... I like that it so different and abstract, but anyhow I didn't have tje patience to see it to the end .... More fond of Your older productions
the way i understand '_', its some kind of representation of the beauty of what our society created this century: a flood of electromagnetic waves + computer | radio networks.

This flood, this rain of information forms a new, hidden, nature of its own.. a nature that you can't normally see, but has to be unfold as in '_'

it's just a new aesthetic that you are not yet familiar with..
added on the 2002-11-11 14:00:26 by _-_-__ _-_-__
plus, i disagree, there's some work in the visuals... its not just one effect left running for the whole duration of the demo.. it has movements like in the music, and maintaining | controlling the process of how it reaches a kind of climax with the different part of the music is not something you can do in 5min of work

i see your point, tho i don't see what these uninteresting patterns have to do with the subject (and before you starting placing yourself on a motherfucking platform again by statements as 'you're not familiar with it' or 'you won't understand', i'd like to emphasize that i *am* abled to think on an abstract level). if one would want to make a display of that hidden nature, i'd suggest that one could come up with a slightly less simple and more interesting display of it. i agree that it's a matter of thought that forms the only way to come up with a way to visualize it, but this seems like pure lazyness. every aspect of nature (even *that* nature) is fucking complicated, so a more detailed attempt at presenting a view wouldn't hurt.

now, I don't mind being exposed to arty faggoty crap or whatever it's called, but this is the equivalent of having your face punched in a lot of times over a long period time in the most boring way imaginable. sort of subconscious punching, really, in which you are not quite sure why you spent time watching this.

and again this proves that there doesn't seem to be a threshold below which people just give up on your production... even random pixels will be considered art if your infofile is pretentious enough.
sucks added on the 2002-11-11 17:14:46 by sagacity sagacity
See it as a suggestion that steers one’s perception of an intangible reality. Contemplate the void between the pixels, decipher the enigma and interpret the emptiness, and then you will surely unveil the derivative nature of the concept and absolute banality of this “art”.

you can argue all day about art, the target of the demoscene or the concept behind it etc etc. but in the end it's if you enjoyed watching it or not that counts... and yes, i did enjoy this :)
if there's something i'd complain about it would be the transitions between the different parts in the music. they seemed kinda "rough".

I just say one thing, MIND FUCK! Suggestive as hell! An exploration of the collective unconscious. This is the coolest thing I have ever seen! It's amazing, I have never seen anything like this before! Calling this a demo is an insult to the product. This has trancended the limited shit a demo can be. This is something completely different. Just light up, watch it and you are in for a trip you will never forget. (I recommend watching this on a good television, prefarably with a good stereo connected to it and inside a completely dark room!). A warning to the faint hearted, the middle part is scarry as hell!

Less is more. Many coders seem to judge a product by the number of effects or by the number of bits consumed by the audio. That's why coders can never create art, only artists can. But coders, do not worry. Your latest 3D players will probably get all the needed votes at the demoparties...

i still didnt see this but i feel i'll like it at least in a way. cause its special. just look at the comments and you'll see.

an advice by a friendly stranger: dont look from the same point of view all the demos. dont have a point at all, let the demo place it.

basically, the same thang goes for everything - especially music. one might understand that, say techno and rock can be only listened in completely different ways, i wouldnt even dare to call both of these music. rather sound. and demos? demos are long gone if you complain about these not being. rasters, scrollers and sprites. dont you watch oldskool productions completely different way than nuskooldesigndemos or 3dflybies?

ofcourse everyone knows that. oh well, who cares - i can only speak of myself and thank g0d i'm still enjoy most of the sides of life =]

Some reactions remind me of what happened at the premiere of "The Rite of Spring" by Igor Stravinsky. Yes, that thing they often use as background music for ice skating performances, was received in a complete riot by the audience.

Not trying to make a comparaison between the works, just between the audiences..

in this case its more like less is nothing..

Im all for the progression of the scene, but a 20mb bad ambient tune with 1 dull routine just doesnt deserve anything but a boo. You guys didnt even try,.

i thought worlds of chimera and that last 3state thing. But this doesnt come anywhere near the feel and visual/audio experience of those.

If this is "art" so is a picture of me pissing in the wind combined with a square sound.

...now...if it was 4k i may have been more keen on it, due to the limitations of 4k, but even as a 4k this would fall flat on its ass.

Actually if this was released as 4k, most people would should BOOOOOO...but because its huge in size...its art?

mainstream will suit me just fine then.

incidentally, it's called 'cognitive dissonance'. you don't like this demo, but you do like art. the infofile and general packaging of the demo implies it is considering itself art. you then try to make the dissonance go away by reasoning that this demo is, in fact, art, ergo: you like this demo.

But like all "abstract" stuff, you can't objectively say "this could have been done better" or "this part is truelly amazing"...
So I'll just give my personnal thought about this one : this one isn't spatial enough (unlike chimera), although there were some spacy vision in _. I find it also too long and not thrilling enough (unlike chimera again).

added on the 2002-11-12 05:37:17 by Splif Splif
Let's begin by quoting good old Webster 1913.

- - -

Ab"stract` [L. abstractus, p. p. of abstrahere to draw from, separate; ab, abs + trahere to draw. See Trace.]

2.

Considered apart from any application to a particular object; separated from matter; exiting in the mind only; as, abstract truth, abstract numbers. Hence: ideal; abstruse; difficult.

- - -

And that is exactly what abstract art is. Pure shapes and colours, with very little semiotics involved, if any at all. Stimuli, without any strict meaning, just for the sake of stimuli.

And yet you keep talking about "understanding" this type of stuff.

This isn't something you understand - this is something you perceive. If you try to "understand" this you're not very likely to "get" this at all - even if you claim to.

You attack this for its lack of message, for its apparent emptiness. You then proceed to attack the people who disagree with you, since surely they MUST be pretentious. Pretty much the same thing as hearing a monotone techno track and complaining: "There's no melody! There should be a melody, there's always been a melody. I think they just want you to BELIEVE there's a melody! What fools you are!"

Not that I'm naive enough to believe that there aren't people out there who are just taking the opportunity to indulge in some pseudointellectual elitism. "Look at me! I understand this!"

And, as I suspected from the moment I read the very first comments, the dreaded "clearly you don't understand art" has popped up here as well.

YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS. You either get it or you don't. Your loss if you don't. Neither makes you any better or worse though. It's only when you take up arms to attack or defend something that isn't even there that you start appearing, to put it bluntly, moronic.

End of rant.

No thumb yet, I'll need to watch this a couple of more times before I decide whether I want to give one. Surely fascinating on the first viewing - that "wind pushing the desert sand" isn't as far fetched as you might like to think - however, I feel that I need to find out whether the impact remains on consecutive viewings.

if you dont have 15 minutes to spare, or cant sit still and watch for that long, dont bother with this one.
although i found it a bit slow at some points, that was necessary to give the effect that you feel that nothing is happening, only minor changes but suddenly everything has changed totally into something new and beautiful.

It's interesting how this changes (or evolves) all the time, but actually doesn't change at all (wow, how deep :p). First time I watched this, I almost pressed esc, but this just sucked me in and kept me from doing it. Second time I watched it, it was amazing. Gotta watch third time.

I realized that this is worth thumbing up.

Minor problems though, it does get even a bit too slow (at least the last part seemed to go on a bit longer than desired) and the way some of the layers in the soundtrack ended abruptly was quite distracting.

Minor problems aside, still an interesting prod. Epic in scope compared to Chimera, although none of the images here alone quite have the impact of the structure portrayed in Chimera.

I guess the people who made this would appreciate Wilt.

Andy Warhols film "skyscraper" is like this. It's nothing, it's a waste of time, it's contains several hours of a bloody skyscraper and once in a while the camera pitches a few degrees upward. If you ask a real "artist" they would say that Warhol was a genius by doing this, but hey, was he really? Art is about provoking, nothing more, nothing less.
Rent a gallery where art can be installed and leave pouet for demos (yes, I don't call this a demo, I call this crap!)!
added on the 2002-11-17 16:28:29 by ekoli ekoli
ok, let's analyze what e-coli just posted, shall we?

first of all you compare this with Warhol, a wellknown artist in the ART-community, therefor you must concider this art. straight after that you mention that you dont accept this as a demo.

so if i got this correctly you mean to say that demos are NOT art? (that's (demo != art), for all you coders)

why the fuck are we doing _this_ then? could it possibly be that there is so much more to art than just provoking people, such as yourself?

when i watch a comedy i don't want to be provoked, i want to be entertained. or when i listen to boards of canada i'd much rather be put in a mellow state of mind than starting to think about the meaning of life and whatnot.

so please, before you make a complete ass of yourself, think stuff through before you type.

cheers!

Kanaljen, you know what I think is even more sad than people not thinking this is art? Is the fact that you have so much time on your hands to defend something that isn't even yours.
I'm glad this inspires you, but it doesn't cut it for me. I enjoyed Chimera, I don't think that because I dislike this demo I am a close-minded individual. May be you should learn to respect people's tastes rather than having an immature "everybody sucks" attitude because we don't all like this demo.
Also people do like to hold on the the traditional scene, as every culture holds on to it's traditions, and I think the traditional scene demand's (and I agree that it should always be this way) - but you need great code to obtain respect. This new 'style' of demo doesn't rely on code, but on 'art' as some people are insisting on calling it. Art being 2d graphics with some noise added to them.
That is all. Thanks,
~Don

XteNt:
I. I have all the time in the world.
II. I don't think that you are a close minded individual, I'm just looking for a fight.
III. Like most artforms usually do, the traditional scene has come to a point where it has painted itself into a corner and has in my own view become unintresting. (except for some very rare cases)
IV. This "demo" relies on code just as much as your ordinary demo. The changes are very subtle and fine tuned.

nosfe:
Your argument raises the good old question of "What is art?". You can always claim that everything is art. Everything can be art but isn't automaticly. Is my cable that I use to connect my digital camera to my computer a piece of art? Is a photography of a dog a piece of art?

Okay, the mp3 is damn big, but :
I enjoyed this demo. It's different from anything i saw. Maybe minimalanimal sux / threepixels sux are closer to it than others demo.
I LOVE new things. Making one new 3D engine / one million polygons / 15 metaballs / 120 fps is great, admirable, technically speaking. But an IDEA has much more value.
Since we cannot see the optimization ideas contained in a 120fps-25 metaballs code (demomakers generally keep the hacks for themselves), i appreciate more the demos where we can reach and get the innovating ideas.
superplek, why do you keep saying this demo is bullshit-crap-suxing-damn-void ? don't you see that a non negligibel amount of sceners like it ?
I understand your arguments. They are true, but not in a "this demo is crap" context. It should be in a "I did not like this demo" context.
For some people, as elric said, a demo must be a technical kickass piece of code. But when i was introduced to the demoscene, people told me that a demo is like a video clip. It's sound and video, good looking, gives you a good time.

Oh, by the way. was it so hard to download 21 megabytes ? was it so hard to click and wait ?

technical analysis: a slideshow with a good resolve ;)

amazing what a fuss this thing creates. for that alone i vote!

seriously: i liked the style.

i can't understand people making such a problem out of this. maybe if you spent months working on your 3d engine and you don't get half of the feedback posted here for instance?

the people who hate this stuff.. i read from their comment that they rather enjoy technical stuff.. but they would have been called 'artfaggots' and 'lamers' 10 years back. in those days ppl will still hardcoding multiplexed sprites records, breaking borders and trying to get 3d in 50fps. not doing using 3d scenes straight out of some construction-kit and putting them into a generic engine (of which half is done by some premade dll).

i think some of these 'art' products have the future and are very progressive.

Technically this is not really standing out in a positive way... 20 MB for this music is quite a lot, and the images are indeed very simple.
Even designwise, there are already a lot of other demos with a similar alternative style out there, like chimera, kolonija or whatever, which are supposed to create some interesting associations.
So why thumb this up? There is a third aspect, which is actually quite important to me: I liked it! Somehow this has been the most impressing art demo I have seen so far, maybe because it was simply so extremly minimalistic, maybe because the soundtrack was actually very well made, maybe because the color shifting was very cleverly done... I don't know.
If you do not enjoy watching this, thumb it down. I think this product is really a matter of taste, and it would be very hard to find arguments to convince anyone, who simply "does not get it", why this can actually be very good.

This is amazing.

Even if you hated it.. you *did* watch it to the end. This means it achieves its purpose wonderfully. And a demo that delivers its intent resoundingly; is a great product.

This is amazing.

A more hypnotic demo you won't find. I love the visual tempo (slow to the point of "has compy frozen?")... I love the inherit plays on optical illusion.. I love how the music is honourable in how it ALWAYS matches the on screen movement perfectly... accelerating & crescendos are prefect.

This is amazing.

Yes, there is the issue - it is a whole lot of code. I agree; there are easy ways in which this technical issue could have been overcome.

But in soccer we have a saying: "doesn't matter how they get there". This is a demo worth every second it runs.. one I will watch over and over.

Amazing...

ooh btw it made me want to watch this , which is no bad thing

Beautiful. Also, sure, it's pretentious, and perhaps un-demo-like, but it appeals to my desire for things to break out of fixed patterns of thought. It's bad enough that every day in my life is nearly the same thing, doing mostly the same things and going to mostly the same places—I don't need each demo that I watch to follow more or less the same format.
