- I'd completely forgotten this was a 64k. Some real good stuff in here.

- 4k procedural graphics Windows Red Crash by NuSan
- Extremely impressive and full of detail, though I can't shake the feeling that something is missing. Maybe it's what Gargaj said, maybe it's the fact that the image feels more artificial the longer you look at it, maybe I just wanted to see something clever in addition to a pretty picture.

- demo Windows Soundproof Motion by Fairlight [web] & Logicoma [web]
- Weak thumb for the music and the first 30 seconds or so of everything together, after that the demo just slows down to a halt and piggybacks on the soundtrack and the raw eye candy of the rendering. The visuals feel too random and certainly can't keep up with the soundtrack in terms of both depth and pace.
It would've been more at home in the 64k space, but even then the hasty direction would prove a problem in case of a serious competition. - rulezadded on the 2021-04-13 15:47:35

- demo Windows Arcade by Spectrals [web]

And here I disagree with the comments referring to it as "pandering". An retro synthwave and neon visuals with no purpose qualifies as pandering. But this has a very clear purpose, develops a clear idea, and shows quite some research went into it. Obviously a lot of work went into it.
The thing is, aside from the delightful soundtrack, most of what feels good about this demo doesn't originate with the demo itself. It invokes a certain past experience—in this case arcade games and the arcade experience in general—that you as a viewer fondly remember and feel good about, and it does so in the hopes that the strong positive feeling will be projected onto the demo doing the references to it. The fact that the whole demo makes arcade games its subject doesn't contradict the fact that it's a demo and not an arcade game, and the merits of the two are separate.
Also not saying this isn't a valid effective method to engage with the audience, but unless it's done very well it's just as easy to disengage, and that is what you're seeing in the comments. - isokadded on the 2021-04-12 00:44:57
- demo Windows Secret stage BOSS by Gam0022 & Sadakkey
- I love arcade shooters very much—though mainly for the bullet dodging which is completely absent here.
I'm also not sure how ethical it is to borrow this much content from another author.
But my main gripe with the demo is that it doesn't really tell or show anything that 2nd Stage Boss and Final Stage haven't already. And more importantly, those two were 4ks which had to work around a severe size limitation (and have done so wonderfully) while this demo had the luxury of unlimited content space and still failed to pack the punch of its predecessors. The only thing new in it are greetings which I don't think add any artistic value here; if anything, they dilute the pace. It's an empty retread of an existing work by somebody else, inferior to it in most aspects.
And that may explain the low rank. - isokadded on the 2021-04-08 00:25:19
