So, I made a Pouet logo PNG, named darwin-Pouet.png, and when uploading, got the message it is some sort of bad filename... what is going on? Also, how do you do transparency in jpg or gif, if I try to make my logo viewable in Internet Explorer?

Transparency in JPG? That was a good one... And transparency in GIFs... well, how would IE be any different there? As for the filename... maybe try lowercase letters and underscores only.

I thought jpgs, gifs did not have transparency, but the logo making instructions implies that they do.

GIFs and PNGs do, JPGs don't.
It's 2013 so PNG is probably your best choice!

Ok... I uploaded a couple. My first copy of the first was over 128 KB, and it did not say it did not upload, but then I did not see it on the vote page, so I uploaded it again after my second one (which I did not see either.)

darwin: I was able to see the logos you did on the vote page. I cast my vote on them. Judgement was swift.

and the darwin award for trying to get transparency in JPEGs goes to....

As if most/all browsers care much about file extensions. Plenty of animated jpegs on imgur etc. :)

Also, use something like PNGGauntlet to further crunch your PNG's size.

Maali, probably, depending on what Photoshop uses. PNGGauntlet combines OptiPNG, PNGOUT and DeflOpt, so you can be rather sure that you get a smaller file in the end. Depending on the picture, it can take quite a while to go through all three optimizers, though. :)

That said, most of the time the difference between the three optimizers is in the byte range, so unless you really need to save that last byte, it's usually enough to just pick one of them. I've been using PNGOUT for years.
