I just finished reading this article about the next version of Direct3D. http://www.beyond3d.com/articles/directxnext/
The unified shaders sounds like a good idea but im a bit sceptic about the new memory model. Today coders have to balance the content so it doesnt overflow the target memory size. In the new model coders will still have to do this, cause swapping will kill framerate. The only difference is that its gonna be harder to determine when the card starts swapping than it was determining when the memory ran out.
And framebuffer access, its no wonder the manufacturers are trying to get this of the list. Nice in theory, but hard to implement efficiently in practice.
