Delete all the hidden windows update folders in the windows folder and try again - had me going mad on my HP Mini 110, but this fixed it...
oh, by the way, mine is Windows XP...
Putting an SSD in was the best upgrade I ever did to any computer...

Agreed on the SSD. I'm on an old iMac here, a core2 2.8ghz, 4GB of ram and a 64GB SSD. My work computer is the same iMac but newer, something like 2.5ghz i5 and 8GB but with a regular HDD. My old computer feels MUCH faster in general use, even though it's really much slower. Even the limited memory isn't much of an issue, because the swap file is so fast when it runs out. I'm not even considering a HDD for my next upgrade :)
2x32gb ssds - 1 debian, 1 win7, with normal hdds for /home, storage. It flies.
well damn. i thought this conversation ended yesterday. thanks for all the replies. what i was thinking is since it's an hp computer just have her press esc on boot and go into the hp recovery menu. apparently the recovery menu on an hp netbook is not F11 like on my hp laptop. then i'm gonna have her rollback the update and if that doesn't work i'll try some of these other ideas through the command prompt in the hp recovery section.
