Political Compass
category: offtopic [glöplog]
So let's try to make a political compass questionnaire for Europe.
Some suggestions:
Is private ownership of means of production good? (yes = right)
Should death penalty be reintroduced? (yes = authoritarian)
Should homosexuals be allowed to marry? (yes = libertarian)
Should the government regulate the economy? (yes = left)
Should immigration from non-European countries be stopped? (yes = authoritarian)
Is the church the right institution for matters of moral? (yes = authoritarian)
Should genetic modification of humans be allowed? (yes = libertarian)
Should abortion be legal? (yes = libertarian)
Should pornography be legal? (yes = libertarian)
Should criminals be punished harshly? (yes = authoritarian)
I believe the Political Compass should be extended by a third scale, interventionist/isolationist, as foreign policies cannot really be classified on the current scale. Then you could ask questions like:
Should the European Union criticize authoritarian states for their Human Rights policies? (yes = interventionist)

How are these suggested questions geared towards a political compass for Europe?
They're the same questions I answered yesterday on that site. Like, they are EXACTLY the same questions.
Maybe you meant that the same answers are showing a different political leaning in Europe compared to, say, the US?
Do you care to explain?.
The plain concept of categorizing into economically left/right and socially libertarian/authoritarian is set up by so simple rules that it is universally applicable. No difference between EU and US, I say.
Not even a difference between cultures.

You are right. The concept of left/right and libertarian/authoritarian is universal, IMHO. I did not compare the questions I made up with the ones from the website. Maybe they are similar. But I think that the questions I asked are relevant to present-day Europe. They mostly deal with stuff the politicians and the media keep talking about.
dude, get back on the meds allready!
