3dmax textures & mas export help
category: general [glöplog]
Please can somebody who knows about Demopaja and 3dsMax help me?
I can't work out how to export textures. I know how to do environment mapping - I just choose reflection in material editor/maps, load my bitmap and this always works when I export it, but I don't know how to do basic texture mapping.
Whenever I load a (non reflection) map and export it to MAS format to use in Demopaja none of the textures show in the scene. They load but I always get flatshaded objects. :(
I hope this makes sense to someone and they can put me right. Thanx for reading.

I am using 3dmax 5 with the 3d max 4 plugin. Does this cause a problem?
it's called UV mapping ...
Demopaja needs UV coords for every vertex
check this little primer and you should be okay ->

Thank you Weyland very much. I've got it all working ok now. :) Respect!
it's the bare bone basics but I'm glad it helped ya
It did "work" in envi mode because the UV coords are generated (from the vertex normals)
i.e. the program ignored the UV values (you didn't have) and made it's own
I also recommend reading the 3dsmax 5 manual on UV mapping, environment mapping and texture mapping in general.
happy modelling !

yes thanks Weyland. We are getting there slowly but surely. I think we are getting somewhere with textures and lighting and stuff now. Now we have to get some modelling practice.
No more env mapped cubes or flat shaded donuts in Fearmoths demos ever again! :)

thank heavens for that !!
does that mean you're going to make something decent this time? :)
(don't get me wrong, i'd love to see it)

haha I wouldn't go that far, but we should make something better anyway. :)
Just another question though. Does Demopaja's Mas player support tiled textures? When I port a 3d scene to MAS format the textures are all stretched and the tiling and mirroring is lost?!?!

the UV coords was an educated guess, maybe Demopaja has some docs on fileformats ?
Demopaja docs aren't very helpful for total beginners like me sadly. But you were right, it was a prob with the UV coords and once again we're getting things working. Thanks Weyland. I appreciate the advice!
