Catch 22 could be called a war movie too I guess.

@dodge: your point about budget is taken, but I still contend that Gettysburg is a far better movie. The book was written by Michael Shaara (much better writer IMO)...his son picked up the series to make a buck and wrote the prequel and sequel.
Between platton and apocalypse now the former IMO is both better and easier watch, but both are really good.
I also recommend jarhead for an up-to-date war movie.. deer hunter as mentioned is superb and also der untergang altho a bit different.
Inglorious basterds is also really good.

btw, "guns of naverone" and "where eagles dare" is two _really_ good classics.

That would be 'The Eagle has landed', both that movie and A Bridge too Far had Michael Caine starring.

Ahh, both of those movies making heavy use of the unknown Wehrmacht regiment of expendable stunt-nazi's which went down in their hordes to the death-chattering machine guns of the heroes. One the plus side, the survivors were able to propagate their genes into the new generation of Star Wars Imperial Stormtroopers (non-clone edition) ;-)
Putting in another recommandation for Band of Brothers. I've watched the entire series 11 times, currently working on the 12th.
Kelly's Heroes
oh shit, I was just about to post this:
... there's no word how much donald sutherland rocks in it.

Cross of Iron.. Probably the weirdest ending ever.
