demo <-> techdemo

category: general [glöplog]

I've been wondering for a while about one thing: at which point becomes a demo a techdemo? I ask this because it appears to me that the focus has shifted more and more on design in the last years, so perhaps the line between techdemo and demo has shifted as well.

A good example: would you call the "demos" from the 3dmark/futuremark stuff actual demos, or rather tech-demos?

I would call them Bruno & Bronko, then I would open an twitter account for them, and tell the world, what i think: http://twitter.com/brunoandbronko

why do you feel you'd benefit from putting the demo in box a or b?

Well I dont know if there is a point where everybody says "nah, thats a techdemo, doesn't belong in pouet" for example. Would the nvidia/ati demos (the non-interactive ones) qualify?

Well, 3DMark isn't here, even though it has a pure demo part, because it's mainly a benchmark I guess (that, and that the newer versions actually cost money).

when it doesn't use textures, then it's a tech demo!

when smash writes looooooong blog entries about them, it's a techdemo!
But Smash hasn't written *anything* about his zombie rendering in his blog. :(

if you mean by showing of the technicial capabilities of the hardware like a graphics card or cpu one would probably call all demos (that utillize these things) a techdemo. but its rather a abstract subject to talk about i think. if the definition of a tech-demo should be about the theory on hardware-utilization i would guess so. not all demos do that though.

When the only feelings it is intended to evoke in the viewer are "WOW, LOOK AT THAT TECH, I'LL BUY IT RIGHT NOW", then it is a tech demo.
