Heaven 7, High-Res HD (TM)
category: general [glöplog]
now that this is done, go build me a sand castle. and ask your wife to sew me a wizard robe.
Running perfectly smooth on my machine in 1600x1200, that's a nice improvement :)
trixter:
connection to ftp.oldskool.org fails, but i also uncompressed hplus some years ago... maybe this helps ;-)

Whoops! ftp fixed.
Interesting, your version is 6 bytes smaller than mine... wonder what you left out ;-)

running hplus in high resolution wont be easy because it basically a DOS program, with all kind of sick limitations : available memory, hard to debug, video resolution etc...
first step would be porting it to an win32 SDL application by copying the entire binary then reallocate some addresses and trap dos interrupts
(it have been done recently by a team for a full dos game but i dont remember the name (think it was for syndicate)
when you have a full win32 application (even without sound) you can start hack some values and play around more easily
sounds sensible, but like a tedious amount of work.
better first someone check if there still is some h+ source that may or may not be available for this purpose? :)

IIRC Alkama was going to port H+ to Win32 at some point (well, that was years ago) and got hold of the sources as well..
And that note I also recall Ile having the source of Hplus? Could be wrong, but probably not..
bump...
Shit, that was five years ago...scary if you ask me.
Anyway, have had the idea to hack this again this night to run on my triscreen, got 3136*1536, about 5MP.
However on my 2600K it's more like 10-12 fps...I think I hoped more but it was probably foolish :)
Maybe there's a 'market' for the one who'll make a high res lightning fast gpu remake now :)

eh.. were the sources ever released?
Well, not really.
I talked to Picard yesterday after Experience and he seemed rather reluctant about it.
Instead of remaking demos - why not make new ones? Crazy idea, I know :)

There are also potential major flaws learning that way too.. maybe going direct to copy will miss out learning how the originator got there..
I think the =http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folk_process]Folk Process can be applied to demos, its a method through which art evolves. Look at the existing, be inspired by it and adapt and use/improve the idea to fit a different theme..
An example, choose three effects you can achieve from three demos you love, learn them, make them, maybe even better them. build a theme/story around them.. out pops a new demo which isn't an imitation of the three original sources of inspiration and stands on their own.
but you don't need to poke in ancient code to establish such innovation
