Intel Demo Competition 2007
category: general [glöplog]
The Intel site is updated...
I'd like to see the amount of votes, like they are shown at parties aswell. I'm not saying they cheated, but by huge margin sounds quite weird to me. How about counting the votes (just for fun) by excluding the votes casted via anonymizer proxies? Don't get me wrong, Still's demo was nice, but not winner material in any sense IMO.

By a huge margin, Still defeated the four contributions of the other competitors with their work ISO9241

Still didn't have any one thing that was better than the others perhaps, but to me at least it fitted together much better than any of the others and was therefore better overall. So it got my vote, and I guess others' too.
It'd definitely be good to see the number of votes and whether they counted dodgy votes etc. tho :)

And people talk about the results of evoke?? I mean, look at THESE results! Imo everyone expected that ASD, Fairlight or Synesthetics will battle this one out - just have a look at the popularity-meter...
ok, a bit strange results, but hats off anyway. Still knows what they are doing, obviously.
But may I suggest next time to skip the information regarding the locality of group. I mean, in the age of globalization does it really matter if your group is 'From UK,USA and Spain' ?
And to point the finger towards our group and the first round of the competition, I know for a fact that lots of votes came to us just because we are Greek. And the Greek fanboys (most of them having nothing to do with the scene, having never heard of us and so on - the core of the Greek scene is too small/lazy to affect voting anyway) voted en masse (some even trying to hack the site).
I bet that would be a common story..

For me, Still was the clear winner from the very first time I saw it. Fairlights was too empty, STS was too short and ASDs was too ASD for many :).
Navis: I actually like that the site says which countries the groups are from, precisely because it highlights the point that it is not a strictly local german thing.

astronaut: opinion time. My guess is that many people outside the demoscene are voting. I am new around here and still see with an outsiders eyes a lot of the time. Its easy for me to understand how Still could have won by a large margin with non-scener voting. You can also see how others could have won within the demoscene votes. No details so as not to sound like I'm criticising the demos, which are all far better than I can do, but Stills demo just looks like an outsider would expect, beautiful, elegant and a little photorealistic in places. The moment of the robot touching a sphere is a knockout moment for outsiders.
Honestly, the value system for graphics for non-sceners seems to be quite different to sceners.
This message does not imply that Stills demo has no scene merits of course. Just that the margin of popularity would be less great with only sceners voting.

I have found out that I usually like demos that "outsiders" like a lot more than the popular scene favourites. In general, there are exceptions of course.. I think it's because in those demos, there's often something appealing to the general "humanity" than just insider scene things.
Also, I think that the Pixtur did some storytelling magic with ISO9241, compared to the other entries, which are more "beginning-to-end" types of demos (except for STS, which is so anti-climactic it hurts :)
Yeah, I think auld got it right... And on a very positive note: this contest grabbed a lot of attention from people that didn't knew demos yet. There was a huge article on "Spiegel Online" in Germany, for example.
This intel competitions are actually quite nice. Losers or winners we have to agree on that.
This competition for sure produced five very nice demos in an already impressive year for demo lovers, I really have to agree on that.
i don't quite grasp what "outsiders" might've seen in the still demo. personally i think it's the most like a typical demoscene demo of all the entries, in terms of theme, style, direction and such. and clinging onto traditions disgusts me.
reed: things 'outsiders' might like about the still demo - it runs fine on most hardware; it has good progression, almost a story; it looks cool (actually it looks pretty much as good as any of the other demos, even if it's a bit 'low tech' in comparison); everything fits together (i.e. the music, graphics and general flow).
You could pretty much say that it's the least flawed of the demos I guess - the flt one looked kindof empty, and nothing really happens (plus it won't run on most PCs out there), the ASD one had a very retro look and feel that won't appeal to everyone, the xplsv demo also had high hardware requirements and I guess wouldn't look all that special if you didn't understand the technical stuff they did, and the STS demo didn't really go anywhere (and needed a powerful GPU again - although it did revert to a cool 1d mode on my shitty card =).
Tradition though.. I used to think the same way, but lately I think tradition is just as important as progression. Without tradition you lose something.. a sense of direction maybe.

ok can we try again ? :-)))
Ok, enough already with the should have won -arguments. Let's have the points! (with and without the anonymizer thing plz!) :)
psonice, about traditions.
One issue I have here is that often it is assumed that traditions apply to the form of a demo first and foremost. Whereas I disagree and say they are mostly about the attitude towards demomaking rather than a set of precise requirements a demo must meet.
Otherwise we would still be using duck.3ds or dolphin.3ds or torus.3ds
Or scrollers.
The scene should in my mind have no stylistical boundaries. The reason: initially the only boundaries were imposed to us by the supporting hardware.. And one of the scene's value is precisely to shatter those boundaries. So I don't see why we should abide by stylistical rules.

knos: I pretty much agree.. "traditions" shouldn't be any rules you have to stick to, even when it comes to attitude.
Personally I think even scrollers and duck.3ds are fine, so long as the demo brings something fresh (like the equinox demos). I'm as happy seeing something like that as something with a really new style - the only thing I really hate is oldschool done in oldschool style - usually badly (slow jerky scrollers at 3ghz anyone?) by people who think that style is the one true style. Urgh.

ASDs was too ASD for many
I belong to the minority there, unlike other ASD demos, this was actually refreshingly nice and worth watching.
At first I exploded into a "WTF" when I got the news of Still winning this compo, but in all honesty, I can see why.
i'm personally surprised that Still won even if they have produced a wonderful thing, i would have paradoxally said that it is more scenish and far less geekpop than STS or ASD but maybe it is very "german touch" (with farbrausch) and then more germans have voted for it (?).
anyway all demos were cool, and afterwards i really like the xplsv one with their smooth visuals and weird tooth/iceberg concept :D

I already left a small comment at BF. But this discussion seems to fit better.
We all were really surprised to win. I personally saw us at the usual 3rd place. It was an excellent competition with way better entries than I expected so closed to Assembly. So we also twisted our brains figuring out how this result could happen. The only reasons can can spot are those:
1. All other demos excel on something special (graphics design, abstract art, trance and chill-out). Maybe we got the rest who could not decide.
2. Iso was much shorter. I can imagine that the hectic voting was driven by surfers coming from sites that were not really related to the scene.
Of course I also would like to see the votes.
On the demo: I find it most interesting how people react on Iso9241. It never meant to be traditional in any way, quiet the opposite. But this might be your fate with directx7.
