i still don't at all understand how to use these RSS feeds. ok so they're some xml data. what then? what should i use it for? the websites google gives me talk so much about 'syndicating', 'aggregating' and 'umbrella terms' that i'm sortof losing the actual use of it all. anyone bored enough to elaborate?
I like to use RSS feeds as live bookmarks in Mozilla Firefox. They appear like normal bookmark folders, but the contents are updated according to the feed. On some pages (eg. slashdot.org), an orange icon appears in status bar and you can subscribe to the feed by clicking it. In some other sites (eg. pouet.net), you have to create live bookmarks manually: Bookmarks | Manage bookmarks... | File | New live bookmark...
There is also separate programs for RSS feeds, such as FeedDemon, but I have no experience of them.

Skrebbel: you either use a program type called "rss aggregator" (or similarly named) - it's like an email reader or something, you usually run that in a background and it somehow shows notification when there's some new RSS item from some feed. So in essence it saves you time to manually go to the websites and check whether something has changed.
Then there are online rss readers like bloglines.com

Some email software are also RSS aggregators, like Mozilla Thunderbird for example. It notifies the updates just like it would notify you about new email :)
I use rssowl(http://www.rssowl.org/) and it feed my addicition to news very well.
It'd be cool to put :
Code:
So that the feeds works directly in the standard compliant browsers and avoid the hassle to create the bookmark by ourselves since the correct MIME type is not set on the PHP scripts.<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" href="http://www.pouet.net/export/lastprodsadded.rss.php" title="pouet.net | latest prods added feed" />
egbert: you can also use it to feed dynamic info from other sites into your own site. easier to parse an xml standard then to parse html for the relevant info.
Actually it would rock if the <link /> tag were set on prodlist.php accordingly with the type, selection and order inputs chosen by the user.
haha never recognized pouet has a rss-feed :D
