Hi, I have a C64 collecting dust, and I thought why not brush the dust off it and put it to use :)

Unfortunately I have no 1541 drive and 5 1/4" disks are a bit hard to find (are they still made?), so I have been looking at PC<->C64 cables here:

But my question is: which cable should I buy to get best compatibility with C64 demos? I guess there will be some issues with turbo-loaders and so on, wouldn't there?

Well, the x1541 is a cable which connects your 1541 to your pc. Bad luck.

Ask at #c-64 / ircnet, there are quite some interesting solutions (partly not cheap). A floppy drive and some disks (ppl told me, Jens Schönfeld is still producing them) would be the cheaper alternative.

not necessarily , you can use a x1541 cable to connect a c64 to a pc which emulates the diskdrive http://www.64hdd.com/64hdd.html

i doubt its very compatible with custom loaders, it will work with one filed demos, but for that i think an mmc64 from jens schönfeld is a better choise

If you can find a second-hand 1541 drive there is probably a good chance you can also get a bunch of second-hand 5'25'' disks from the guy selling the drive.

Yeah, I just order 200 disks from Protovision, and I found a guy selling 2x1541 drives :)

Offcourse I had to buy his old C64 as well, so now I have 2 C64s :)

If you don't have an 1541, I'd recommend you buying a SD card reader from Jens Schönfeld, Individual Computers. It is a perfect replacement, you just load the D64 files on an SD card, and the C-64 can read them as normal disks.

front243, concerning the disks try your look at ebay. i got quite a bunch of new disks for 2€ some months ago; that basically saved my old disks ..

You probably should get both a 1541 AND a memory card reader. You should probably go for the IDE64 card rather than the MMC64... The IDE64 reads CompactFlash cards and allows you to connect stock IDE/ATA/ATAPI hard drives and even CD-ROM drives.

Well that would be a pretty good set up. You did forget one thing: a SuperCPU. Currently it's mainly useful for GEOS/Wheels users, but a cool game called Metal Dust also needs it. A C64 + SuperCPU basically eliminates any need ou may have for a PC or Mac...
