From my preliminary findings it's mostly about memory, and sometimes some visual degradation from accidentally using newer Denise, but that was much later. It doesn't seem like people started using big blits with the appearance of bigger Agnuses, as for a significant impact on the golden age they probably appeared too late.
I'd love watching an endless number of demos to prove you right on this. :-)

What would make it up can be negotiated when we have more data. What you point out does not contradict the suggestion. It's the same as with OCS/ECS vs. AGA, some productions would be split off, while many if not most run on higher machines, at the same time a new home would be opened for productions that require more memory, a newer OS or run from HD. The only difference is, you could check with a glance on Pouet if it runs on an old A500.

I can't remember that being a compatibility issue back in the day, and there was certainly no shortage of OCS A500s around. I would imagine that the performance benefit of big blits wasn't worth alienating most A500 users, but I'd love to see such demos for the sake of curiosity!
