Fizzer's Source Code Release Thread

category: code [glöplog]
thumbs up for releasing those fizzer! :)
i agree with kusma that to have them also on github would make it more useful in practical terms. i wanted to fork them into the in4k group, and can't without uploading them myself, which i guess i'll end up doing if edd doesnt feel that interested in having it on his own github account. but it does feel a bit awkward to upload someone elses source when they even have an account there, even though the license clearly allows it.

The reasons for my hesitation to put the code on GitHub were:

  • I really don't feel like spending that extra effort after the time it has taken to properly prepare the sourcecode itself, to contact people for permission, and to ensure everything still compiles to under 4kb and still runs, etc.
  • My feeling was that this loose collection of archives with no platform affiliation is more 'free and open'.
  • I wanted to leave the choice of platform to others, so that it isn't necessarily GitHub but possibly something else, such as GitLab.
  • None of these demos are living projects. They are done, and "feature-frozen". This means for example that a pull request makes no sense, and thus a collaboration-focused platform is not necessary. That said, I don't want to prevent people from fixing bugs in-place if they really want to.

However, I like kusma's idea of a central location for demo source archival. I wasn't aware of the in4k group. Plus the code-browsing features of GitHub are very useful indeed. I also (obviously) do like the idea of kusma handling the GitHub upload for me, and putting it under my name just to properly indicate the original author. I actually didn't know this was possible, and I'd be very grateful if you would do this for me kusma!

Finally got around to uploading the resulting sources, sorry for the huge delay. They can be found [here](https://github.com/demoscene-source-archive).

Hi,
not sure if this is relevant but while browsing on my old HDD/DVD/CD archives, I found the 3D assets (3dsmax, Lightwave, Photoshop files) of some of the demos I worked on (Couloir 14, Caillou, Cosmowave Music Disc Trailer...).

It needs to be cleaned up, because back in the days my projects were REAAAALLY messy, but could it be of some interest to share the original 3D assets as well as the source code ?

I started here, btw (tiny prod, nothing crazy so far) : https://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=27

Please try to contact kusma about that. I am not the maintainer of the archive. You can find kusma's email address on the archive hub page here, or you could try the demoscene Discord server.

Oh, no! I think "a fish best served cold" is missing from the GitHub archive... :(

I wonder if there is a new license coming out that is open source but will not be allowed to be used for training machine learning?

Source code makes it easier for people like me to learn :)

I don't know why some things are missing from GitHub. I am aware that the original source links are broken, but for now everything can still be found at https://files.scene.org/browse/resources/code/sources/fizzer/

Seems I had a typo in my script where I converted "The Real Party Is In Your Pocket" twice instead of "A Fish Best Served Cold" 🤦
