mixing mod/sid/... tunes

category: general [glöplog]

hi folks,

i'm looking for any kind of software or soft/hardware combo that would allow
me to mix mod/sid tunes and such.

i've been thinking about using two pc plugged in a mixing table and using a
player with good pitch control and position control (such as good ol' cp for
dos) but what about the sids? sidplay doesn't allow you to change neither
song position (or time) nor its pitch... i've been thinking about crafting
my own player using libsidplay.... does anybody knows

i once heard about a project of mod mixing software made by some swiss sceners (if i remember well), i lost the bookmark and i completely forgot
the name of the project...

any feedback, ideas and urls are welcome!

cheers!

the latest version of the cubic player (opencp 2.5.1) supports sids with pitching.

thanks for the info!

but all the version of opencp i used so far where hell a lot more unstable than the original 2.0alpha which i used to run for hundreds of hours in my msdos days... i also found opencp to be slower (more latency when moving accross rows and patterns) and this could be painful for any serious live performance... but maybe that this has been fixed in the latest release?

perhaps you could extract some module
player code and sidplayer code and make
up vst instruments out of them, with the
controls you have/want.. then you can
reuse them in sequencers or other
vst hosts for mixing purpose.

seems to me like the right way to do it.

(s/vst instrument/max externals/ if
you have a mac)

brioche, the latency is configurable in the cp.ini file. and actually, opencp should be a lot more stable than the old 2.0 alphas... what are you doing?

ryg : well, i have probably used the earlier versions of opencp (1998 or so) but the fact is that it was quite crash prone on my pc (it could be my config), for the latency problem i should have looked around in the ini file though...

the-guy-with-an-invisible-handle :) : that's an interesting idea but i really want to play these tunes in a real dj-like fashion...

i think i actually found a generic solution, i ran into a very nice wav/mp3 DJ deck software at http://www.deejaysystem.com, i'm playing with this thing for a couple of days now and i'm sure that with more training i could manage to get great results. it has a nice, low latency pitch/position control, allows you to grab the kick quite easily and even has some sort of mouse-based beat matching adjustement, just like when slow down or push your record on a turntable. too bad this thing doesn't come with vinyl smell patches! :)

i'll now convert some modules and sid in volume normalized mp3 and check that one out...

than you all for your feedback!

never emulate sid

yeah i agree it sounds better with the real one, i just heard the difference between hardsid and libsidplay a couple of days ago. i've got a real C=64 but tell me then what kind of software may i use to play them back with enough control to mix them with other tunes...

and if the tunes are to be played on a loud party soundsystem, i guess stoned ppl won't notice the difference... ;)

use 2x c64 and realsidplay by scs*trc plus mixer deck. no pitch change tho and no rewind and stuff..
