That's great unknown history indeed, about almost parallel demoscene in japan.
I knew X68000, it had a good version of Castlevania.

Yeah, as already mentioned - would love to have one to tinker with, but prices are just outrageous...

Yup, a very nice machine. In fact I got an X68000 version XVI (the most sexy imho) with an HD, magnetoptic drive, cdrom and quite a bunch of original games.
The BEST machine ever! Yes - THE BEST!

Generally speaking there are in majority "homebrew" games (released by the developpers themselves sometimes ina very small numbers or only during conve, tions.) and many tools rather than "interactiv presentations".
Personally, I have found only one, but not sure ATM whether it was on PC98 or x68k...

There are indeed "music disks" which are game musicdiscs released in fact by the original software houses (i.e. RENO).

Not really. It depends on what you wanna buy, a x68030, ACE, XVI or Redzöne, Compact model. At what speed you wish to have you marchine at and what HD interface - SASI or SCSI.

You may have a nice bargain here and there if you aim at the simples machines. I am talking about Japan ofcourse, since here in EU resales could have been quite high.

Appart of that, one shall prepare for some soldering. IE, in "classic" x68000 case, an internal power supply should be changed for an ATX one. They were VERY faulty. Some (all?) capacitors gotta be checked and replaced (perhaps those in the FDD as well) as well. A dedicated video cable should be prepared as well, since in Japan they had their own standards, before IBM put their own there. Preferably an RGB one, since the SCART gives a very bad image on the LCD screen.

A mouse and a keyboard, which are not always nowadays sold with the x68000 are a must. Since a joystick port has a different connections, a proper adapter shall be made by the user (or bought) to use a Sega MegaDrive pad or joystick. Unless you have an original Hudson pad.
A midi card would be nice as well. Roland sound module MT-32 or SC-88, with a preference to the first one as it more close to the YM2151 sounds.

And.... perhaps last but not least, a basic hiragana/katakana (and kanji) knowledge would be really an assets since x68ooo's OS - Human68k - is a Japanese language based.

It is my point of view.
