In the demoscene context? 'Cos I don't really feel we're inundated with great journalistic content to the level we were when diskmags were still a thing.

that's more zeitgeist related though. info comes fast and cheap these days.

Doesn't change the argument that diskmags weren't replaced in a satisfactory way. We definitely lost something.

news is covered by pouet, ojuice, bitfellas, facebook,etc

editorial comments is covered on pouet, bitfellas, facebook, twitter

party reports get covered with sofascene livestream, social media and pouet

party invitations are on demoparty.net and social media

interviews with sceners are available on blogs and other websites

introductory articles are replaced with tutorials on youtube and generic demoscene outreach websites

technical articles are written on technical rant blogs and as replies on tech forums, talks on conferences shown on youtube

charts are pouet

i can agree there are some voids spots here and there worth being filled out. but i don't see how a new issue of a diskmag would really do a better job then simply foraging the internet for the info you are looking for. or if you have something to share with others: writing a new blog post or doing a podcast or youtube video about it and spamming the link in a few social networks.

ofcourse a diskmag it's still a valid venture for nostalgia sake or just to consolidate specific recent knowledge in a package.

i remember there was a pico8 scene .pdf magazine at some point which i found adorable and essential to show what has been happening on the pico8 scene. surely there is room for some similar activity in that front.

but i'm pretty sure you would just end up doing yet another website explaining the demoscene, which no one would bother populating with new articles after 6 months. and we all know how much demosceners love spending their time making yet another website instead of a new demo. so i don't think that's likely to happen either.

I only want to refer to Pain #58, it had an article "Does Making Diskmags Still Make Sense?" in it (written by Magic and me). This article discussed in detail exactly what you are talking about. The conclusion was: Making diskmags does still make sense.

And years later history proved you wrong... There is no need for diskmags and there are no regular diskmags left.

Vandalism News is still somewhat regular, even though they're down to one or two issues a year.

Right now I am watching this video interview - in earlier days such an interview would have been released as a diskmag article. But as a video it is even more interesting. This is something that has been enabled by broadband Internet. Indeed, this is an example of a new technology that is superior to diskmags.

a diskmag is unique since it covers all the relevant stuff in a single place contained in a nice and specific interface and suitable music.

all the other stuff is mostly an ugly pile of random dispersed trash, videos a waste of time and bandwith.

only exception: demoparty.net as a party calendar and pouet.net for popularity ranking.


there are many good technical resources on the net, almost none of them are distinct demoscene specific though.

A diskmag has everything in one package.. Yes on the internet Alot can be found but on different websites which you got to Find in the first place.
Websites come and go in due time, diskmags preserve the scene history.
But its faster to published something on the internetz than giving iT to a diskmag and waiting till the release..
