Old farts?

category: offtopic [glöplog]
There's this entertaining old fart that often visits my work place. I think he turns 75 this year.

He quit school after grade six to go work on a farm, but ran away at age 14 to start a life-long career in the oilfield. (He currently owns/operates a pilot & hot-shot company.)

He is famous for working seven days a week, 365 days a year, but several years back he finally took his first ever vacation. He drove from Lloyd to Alaska and back again with his wife. (Who I think takes care of some business accounting...)

Shortly after returning from said trip, I asked him whether or not he managed to sneak in some “work time” during the vacation. He laughed and began telling his tale.

This guy is chock-a-block with great stories. One of these days I'd like to stick a video camera in front of him and record some of his yarns, with the intention of uploading the best ones to youtube. But I'm not sure if it's possible to get him to sit still in one place long enough to accomplish this...

(He also has an obsession with cleanliness and despises "stinky" people.)

sorry, I got confused. I was actually going to tell the following story that involves
an old lady and a turtle: I was moving from a place with sun to a place without,
and put all my stuff on craigslist to get rid of it.

E-mail arrived: "blablaba, I like the blue and green rug you are giving away,
can I have it? - regards, old lady. PS. my turtle saw a picture of it and loved it."

Next day old lady appears on my door to collect the rug. I was happy to see that
she brought her turtle. It seemed to me that this creature had the final say about
whether or not to include this rug in his and her househould.

The moral is: when you get old and want a pet, get a fire breathing dragon.

So are old farts returning to old fart computers? There seem to be a lot of 8/16-bit prods being released.

It's well known that ability to handle more bits decreases with age. You'll see the top 8bit coders start to struggle soon, and the amazing stuff we've seen recently will be replaced with some demos that are amazing considering that they're written in basic.

In that case, I'm going to need to get my hands on some AMD AM2900 parts soon!

This is probably the best thing ever posted on Pouet.

I wonder if there are any old demo-scene farts have their offsprings/kids/children doing demos as well. It can be coding/programming/developing, watching only like I do, etc. :)

I'm, 40... got my first computer in 1983 when i was 12...
Btw I have a scary story 2 years ago about how generations changes:
In 2009, at work, we had a 16 years old trainee. We were talking about old times and I told him about my first computer (Marathon 32 (ZX81 clone)) I got in 1983 and how SLOW it was compared to nowadays.. "Oh yeah", he replied, " That must have been a Pentium 133..."..

Intel was far ahead back then! :D
On the other hand, this is good. There's a whole generation who have never used CLI systems, and have serious trouble accepting that they can use a computer without a keyboard + mouse. All we need to do is make our tools CLI based, and we can keep them subservient ;)

how do you use a CLI without a keyboard?

With the mouse and on-screen keyboard, of course. :P

(I meant mouse + GUI)
