How did you leave the nest?

My house was 10km from uni, so I had no hard incentive to move out before age 23 when I went to study abroad. After 8 months, I was heading home and realized very quickly that I could not go back to living with my parents. Got a cheap and great dormitory room about 3 km from uni, gradually became more and more independent.
Looking back, I should have gone abroad earlier, and moved out earlier too. But hey, things are looking good anyway :-)

i had a nice childhood and my parents always supported me (and still do), but when i decided to cancel university and got my real first job (and in fact the one i still have today because im a lazy bastard) at the age of 25 I decided that 3h of riding the public transport to and from isnt worth the hassle in the long run and I needed to move out at some point in my life anyway.
nobody said anything about growing up, tho...

Incidentally, I when I started studying my university was roughly 10km away as well, which meant my trip there and back took about 45 minutes there and back each day. It was just way too much for me, who had like 5-10 minute walking distance to every school up until that point. After couple months, and few months before I turned 19, I moved to a student apt. So I mostly moved for practical reasons, but ultimately I think it was a good choice overall for less dependence and getting to make it on my own. I still see my family couple times a month on average though.
I guess even at college I didn't spend a lot of time at home due to sofa-surfing, I was there more again once I stared working full-time.
When I left I moved out of the town I grew up in, but I still work there. (20min commute).
So, I have a regular thing set up with my parents to visit for dinner once a week and while there I teach my dad to play the guitar, after a couple hours there I go to a friends (every week too) for a few hours, have a cuppa a catch up before heading home.
A bit routine, but its nice to make time to see some people regularly like that, otherwise it can fall by the wayside.

I could not wait to leave and left as soon as I could. I moved when I was 18. It was with some mates, we found a place in east st paul mn/usa. Turned out we were renting from a total slum lord. It was hard getting out of that situation. After that I moved to north st paul by myself. Lived there for about a year. Then to minneapolis mn/usa. there I stayed until I started getting sick. Soon I started going to the hospital for long stays and lost my job and my apartment. I've been staying back with my parents since. They're kinda my caretakers. My case worker and I are looking for low income housing now as I cannot afford market price on my disability check. I'm functional enough not to live in a group home, which is good. Soon I'll be living on my own again. Soon
