online focus is bogus, content is king

is anyone seriously asking whether two year old content is okay, or if they should release "more often" ?

I *think* there could be some relevance in well-written news from the demoscene that was actually edited, compiled and not wrapped in some kind of ubershitty weird executable that only works on your windows xp :) Would enjoy reading i.e. partyreports by someone who was actually at a party and had some idea of writing.

Remember to also upload your diskmags as video on Youtube...

I also think that the reason why demos don't appeal to a general public is that you need to have some knowledge about how a demo is created to really appreciate the skills of demo coders. So it is just an "art form" targeted at a technical audience.
What amazing insight! Why have you not shared this epiphany with the world?!?!

But that was last month! It seems like the high-IQ society suffers from some sort of amnesia. Too bad... having such high reasoning capacity only to forget everything the next month.

Glad to be "ordinary".

At age 13 I would have known enough about programming to code a game in the style of Jazz Jackrabbit. But I did not do it since I was focusing on other things.

15 years later, we can sadly only conclude his programming skills deteriorated severely.
thought of making a webapp / smartphone app in diskmag style with regular updates a couple of years ago, even considered just updating it on party specials for each party visited (kind of like scenesat radio in a way), it would include a few interviews with folks at the partyplace, reviews of the compos and some aftermath articles on something technically interesting witnessed at the party. concluded my time was more valuable elsewhere.

Nobody can know if he got the skills before try.

Oh! About the thread topic, decades ago I was an avid diskmags reader but www.pouet.net is my favourite diskmag now.

Maali: isnt that a reason to write new ones!? :P

hugi - written for and by people without a clue.
We seem to be managing one release a year of an Atariscene diskmag - if you've not already seen it yet, check out http://mag.atari.org for some inspiration. It displays well and also loads up very quickly on mobile phones too.

We're hoping to release another issue at Sillyventure 2k13, assuming things go to plan whilst we're there.

We would like to release more issues like we used to but the main problem is the complete lack of time with real life stuff. It sucks a bit but we've just got to live with it.

XNA. yuck.

So why does it happen so often that demosceners misunderstand what you write or simply do not accept any point of view apart from their own?

Because the rest of us are normal people and not neonazis nor racists?

maali: so you don't like XNA... but you must be blown away by the game, yes? I mean the graphics there are console quality - better even. Very few NES games look this good.

Why are you talking about graphics when the topic was programming skills? Anyway, I'm off.

Hm, too bad. I was reading your blog and noticed your comment about Prof. Weigand. She's my colleague :)

We all have some programming skills. Who can beat the demon of procrastination wins however.

Adok: which of these was jazz jackrabbit famous for:

a) advanced AI
b) advanced graphics
c) a blue hedgehog

Go on. 30% chance of success.

(I love pedantbaiting :)

psonice: What I meant is that I knew enough to program a platform game, not that I was able to create beautiful graphics. I'm not able to create beautiful graphics.
