What happened to the 4k intros?

which you won't see on a polished intro just as you won't see any z-fighting or clipping on a polished rasterized intro.

yeah but I'm being completely and utterly serious, just like my first comment in this thread

They look the same, they sound the same, they are the same. The last one I really enjoyed was Wishfull Twisting. I still watch it from time to time.

I had high hopes that 8K would bring more fun to the table, but mostly it's just two 4K intros glued together.

8k is a thing? That’s cool to know. That is fairer to the audio composers, glad to see it so better music. Like ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/music/artists/winterbynes/winter_bynes-gravity_assist_ost.exe

Right, Wishful Twisting, which is totally unique and unlike any other intros. All the others can hardly be distinguished from one another though.

Mostly? Like, which ones, specifically? Looking at all the noteworthy ones they seem to stand on their own, albeit feeling like bloated and not fully utilizing the 8 kilobytes to the maximum extent. But certainly not two 4ks strung together. The closest are maybe Hardy's intros but I wouldn't characterize even those as such.

If you really wanna talk shit about raymarched 4ks, bring up the topic of frame rate.

4k intros are like 4096 1-byte intros glued together.

I am kind of on the same page with LJ (as far as I understand him).

Ray-marching, ray-tracing, rasterization, ray-casting, wave-surfing, etc... - those are merely optimization techniques. In theory they shouldn't really affect the final look.

And yet many 4k intros (not all) have some similar look&feel. It is actually because of those few SDF tricks that everyone is using e.g. repeat pattern on a grid or by folding the space few times, maybe rescale after every folding to get some fractal surface etc... Of course this goes well with ray-marching, hence ray-marching gets a bad rep, but it's not ray-marching "per se" that should take all the blame.

Another not so typical raymarching 4k intr: visit berlin

4K is dead but at least it lived longer than the scene.

If Revisions 4k compo last year is anything to go by, everything is fine.

I'm more concerned about what happened to 40k? Only 64k since 2k-isch...?

Perhaps 40k was an Amiga thing only...

Pretty much that.
what about 16k intros? was that ever a thing/compo?

At last years Deadline the strongest compo was the 4k compo and ALL entries were of very high quality and extremly diverse as well. (Thank you guys <3) I'd say 4k is very much alive and kicking.

But the Pouet 4k Intro Experience Service is not fulfilling its customer promise. I suggest the OP ask for a full refund.

As we´ve learned before relaxing stupid creativity-harming limits would definitely make 4k great again!

(also they are using the same synths)

That is not a problem in itself, or at least not as much as it used to be. The problem is (or used to be) that many musicians use mostly the same, standard instruments. The available synths can do many different things (4klang in particular is extremely versatile, as especially Virgill and Noby have demonstrated clearly). It does seem to have become more common to share good instruments for others to use and be inspired by (getting away from the standard ones), which is good.

This topic made me curious about the actual distribution of synths in 4k intros. Looking at the top 25 4k intros from 2017, it looks (as far as I can tell) like this:

Absolute Territory: 4klang
Waillee: 4klang
final stage: Custom
Horizon Machine: 4klang
Unprogress: Clinkster
Faraday Future: 4klang
Alive Here Now, Forever: Oidos
Destination Unknown: Oidos
w a y f a r e r: 4klang
HAL 4000: 4klang
Equilibrium: 4klang
visit berlin: 4klang
お花見: 4klang
Gary Glitter: 4klang
Superfine: Oidos
Cycle Of Nature: Oidos
Oxano: Oidos
Those Who Leave: 4klang
Maintenance: Clinkster
Joia: 4klang
Back to the Roots: Oidos
Dropletia: Oidos
crystalline lord: 4klang
highrider: 4klang
Primordial Soup: Custom

4klang is so versatile that saying that a prod uses 4klang is almost like saying that it uses floating point numbers.

Major respect to Blueberry and Gopher for allowing the 4k scene to sound awesome!
