Thumper, the most demoscenish game since Rez
category: offtopic [glöplog]
What's the point of VR in a game where you constantly have to look forward in order to play?
Gargaj: stereoscopy? But anyway, I would still prefer good old streoscopic TV in this case (higher-res, no screen-door, no sweating).
@Gargaj: well, SuperHyperCube is kinda like that, but instead you look "around" the block to see whether the orientation is correct. So, there's a point of a VR game where you only look forward.
I was talking about Thumper though.
I played Rez in VR and it is insanely good an cool
I play Rez from my oldschool PS2's HDD in glorious 2D SD and it is even better. And speaking of rhythm games, Lumines+ too.
lumines
yes
yes
Does VR cover the whole field of view?
Gargaj, the point is, it enhances the immersion x1000 times, even if u look "just forward". u are completely surrounded in the world and things fly past u in thumper, u can easily look around or behind u and think, goddamn this looks cool. without dying instantly.
u should try it before trying to judge it maybe. VR is incredibly hard to explain.

Speaking of more incredible demoscenish stuff in vr: The easel , its awesome.

i can confirm: the PSVR is overall FUCKING AWESOME!
Since i personally will never ever again spend a single penny on any Sony Product (I fell for Minidisc, I fell for PSX, I fell for PS3), i'd like to make some recommendation here:
Take DMT and listen to for instance the Inception Soundtrack. Its basically the same.
Pro's:
- total immersion
- no crashes, no power outtages
- even mom walking in on you won't interrupt the game
- you will play and win each time
- it is much cheaper
- no personal data will be stored anywhere
- no personal data will be leaked to the public on a yearly basis
- the experience won't be clipped by future rights downgrades
- you will potentially be able to easily repeat the experience 10 years later, without the frustration of realizing that you now own a dysfunct pile of electro junk that you overpricedly acquired as an early adopter because you let anonymous marketing sharks hype you into false excitement through more or less social media pressure
- after the experience, you wont be owning a new piece of otherwise useless electro junk that stings like a knife in your flesh because you actually have no time to use it, and when you do, you must postpone anything else and you're literally isolated from the outside world if you do and you could aswell have done drugs, because oh wait...
- its outdoor-capable, no cables
con's:
- might be as dangerous to health and mental sanity as the actual device
- might be as hard to acquire
- you cannot switch it off ( - i am not sure here, does valium calm DMT?)
- drugs are deadly (on the other hand, life is, too)
- can't take screenshots for social media
SCNR.
All things Sony just make me very very angry.

Bumping it up, just to confirm that Thumper on PSVR is out of this world.
And a bit demoscenish ;)

I kind of get the comparison, but it's not like the demoscene has dibs on abstract and/or psychedelic computer generated visuals in general.
Awesome game anyway!
Awesome game anyway!
Again, when we're saying "awesome game", do we mean "awesome looking"? Cos I'll admit that much, but as an actual game it was a frustrating disappointing experience.
Well, It's not my type of a game as a game, but I really enjoyed a sensor strike in VR. It's an audiovisual pleasure. Also I remember when it was showcased on GDC's experimental games workshop and on big screen it reminded me of watching a demo on a party.
And as for demoscene aesthetics, Thumper has those and it's not all about glow. I believe it's mostly about the sync between the soundtrack and visuals.

By "awesome game" we mean "pretty much hooked on the physical sensation of stomping on cues and currently trying to S-rank the damn thing in Play+ mode".
i remember a time when that was called "tapping your feet".

Killing all peripheral audio/visual impulses. Immersion, if you will.
bullshit, if you will.
let's leave the selling to marketing eh?!

Yeah! Listen to 1in10, he knows better than you that your experience is objectively wrong.
VR games that fill your peripheral vision while the action only takes place in the forward direction work really well for me too. TxK VR really opened my eyes how much more enjoyable and immersive that experience is, and how it helped me hit a flow state quicker than the usual screens.
