It's all a big experiment and I'll also be posting all the numbers (downloads, paid, revenue) on the site too. Thanks guys! Yeah, everyone knows that Radiohead thing by now, what is new is that I'm completely open about all the numbers. It's the sort of thing that I'd wish to see propagate more as it'd definitely affect my own feeling of attaching with the bands I like in a positive way. :)

i hope the music is not as earstabbingly horrid as radiohead though :P

i been checking out t61 for a few days now, it seems very promising. should be worth your while to give it a go juho.

So 13.5% of the downloads were paid for. Do you feel this is a sustainable business-model? I'm not trolling, I'm honestly wondering. As in: are you happy with this? Is it enough for you based on the amount of time and work you put into the album?

It would also be interesting to see the amount of streamed plays compared to the actual downloads, as increasingly, people listen to music in their browser.

Gloom: It's way too early to draw any final conclusions about the viability of the "business model", only been doing it for a bit over a week. In general, I'm happy as long as people listen to what I do. I wouldn't be doing electronic music if I just wanted to make lots of cash out of it.

But if I'll speculate a little, 13.5% sounds like a high number to me honestly. The percentage is way less than that if I count the "illegal" downloads on torrent sites (which I keep track of too, just not as often) and compare them to the overall sales numbers. It's more like 1% or 2% then. For example, Exosphere has been downloaded around 2000-3000 times already on torrent sites (add to that rapidshare, irc, whatever and I think it's double that) and the total sales numbers from iTunes & co is around 20.

It's hard for me to get the play numbers as they're grouped by track and not album, not impossible, just something I don't want to do every day so I go with the D/L numbers. I've been suggesting Bandcamp to automate this stuff tho.

if i get this right:
free album: ~150 free downloads, ~20 paid
sold album: ~2000 free downloads, ~20 paid

possible conclusion: if you sell the album, you get the same income, except at least more people will hear it.

of course this is a wildly exaggerated one, but still, that stat-table is very interesting.

...ok wait sorry i got confused. nevermind.

Yeah, I'll just wait at least a few months before drawing any final conclusions about the numbers. I find it a nice project though. :)
