OIC this is some sort of game where you have to guess the right answer.

YouTube is selling convenience.

- Immediate : no bad surprises.
- Works anywhere : even on your home machine, which, since you are a graphician or a normal internet user, don't have the latest gfx card.
- It's windowed: which means if the spectacle is bad and uninteresting, you can at least hide it under your word file.
- A single place for just about everything : you don't have to buy into the movement, and you can compare.

(of course the no bad surprises part is only referring to "I don't know how to run this or that")

Bad encoding is awfully pre-eminent. I'm not proud of my deities encoding for example.

Remember folks to downscale to 320x240 *before* uploading.

So basically YouTube is the throwaway pop version of demos? :)

random person: "did you see this really cool video on youtube? it's really cool and stylish (and not nerdy wannabe-art at all)! i think it's a music video, although i dont know the band"

you: "ah hah hah - that's no music video, it's in fact a demo. because i am leet, i've already seen it. it runs realtime on your computer. and, in fact, this one is only 64k. that's like the size of your cv in word document form. come over and see it live on my pc."

random person: "WOW! i had no idea such things were possible on a computer. and in such amazingly tight limitations. i'm, like, really impressed and stuff."


this scenario will never happen.

At my work I sometimes watch demos during lunchtime, because I get really bored. My coworkers think I'm crazy and I stopped explaining what they are.

i stopped even thinking about explaining newer demoscene-related things to people ever since a certain smartass claimed that people like farbrausch cheat with their 64ks, because they're secretly unpacking gigabytes of data on your hd while you're watching the loader-bar!
