Attention: Crest
category: general [glöplog]
In boring hours at work I sometimes google my handle just to see if I can find something interesting, funny or at least mildly entertaining.
Today I came across this link:
http://crest.untergrund.net/planetscene-tracklist.html
It seems to me that it's possible to buy a cd with one of my tracks on it (from the demo 'Hog' by Spaceballs). And I just wonder:
Is it too much trouble to *ask* me before putting a track of mine on a cd for sale? I'm still active and stuff, shouldn't be too hard to look me up.
I don't mind the track being spread (I've made it available for download myself as mp3), but there is a difference between sharing something freely and selling it. I read around a bit on Crest's homepage to see if it was stated anywhere what the money went to (non-profit/profit), but didn't find anything.
Sorry if anyone feels that I'm anal about this, but I have a strong opinion about others making money off me without even informing me.
So please, clear this up for me.

actually i must say i doubt crest makes any reasonable money off that at all. i mean 5 euros incl postage all over europe isn't particularly a fortune.
He kept it selling at BP03/04 as well - It also had some of my/our intros... I wasn't sure if it's the nicest way of doing it either... :/
oh come on.. crest can hardly finance anything to eat i guess, so please don't try to piss him off with this stuff..
but on the other side he could at least have asked..
but on the other side he could at least have asked..
yeah, he SHOULD have asked....
Bring back the days of Amiga Format/CU Amiga putting scene stuff on coverdisks and selling the mags... Now *that* was something worth complaining about.
It would be different if Crest was in a millionaire mansion and cruising in an Escalade (ooh how gangsta) because of it, but he's not. Don't see the big deal here.

I guess the point here is that it's common courtesy to ask, I don't think any of us would refuse the permission. I'd at least like to be informed if my productions are included in compilations or so, or used somewhere. Hell, I'd consider it an honor, as long as I was told about it.
Uh, "please don't try to piss him off"? Excuse me?
He has no right to be pissed off if he's the one who's broken copyright law by selling original work without permission.

A bit like Welle:Erdball, who (atleast used to) put a bunch of c64-demos on their commercial cd:s without asking anyones permission.
I'm doing this demoscenestuff for free, and I don't want anyone to try to profit from it in any way. Atleast not without atleasting having the decency to ask me first. Doesn't really matter if they profit 0.01e or 100e, it's my work...

whow, I really need to learn how to spell =)

that is the difference between the scene being community of friendly people and commerce being a hole full of bitches ready to set on lawyers on each other for any miserable bullshit. are you going to kill him ?
I'll take photos
hits: yeah, always fun when someone from your "community of friendly people" take liberties with your products..
for fucks sake, i didn't mean it's allright
probably i shouldn't have posted that at all, it sounds pretty different from what i feel about this. the idea was - never ever ever ever do things like that, but lets first see what crest says before proceeding execution, ok ?
then again it is WRONG. see ? :)
by the way, all the disclaimers, eulas etc inside prod nfo files look pretty lame, but seems they are a must nowadays :/

Why discussing this that much here, guys!??
Isn't it way simple at all!?
If someone wants to use anything from another person for his own product(ion) he _HAS_ to ask that person first or at _least_ has to include credits in his product(ion) of the original creator(s) of 'whatever-was-used'...
Simple!? Yes...THAT'S simple...and _way_ logical and FAIR for each side as well!!
This is not about 'getting rich with all that' or whatever!
It's all just about FAIRNESS and RESPECT to each one in and from the scene!!
Bye,
Weasel
...I (will) hold it this way and always did in the past at least!

what weasel said, i'm off :)
So all you people who are against this... I assume you were just as outspoken and pissed about PD libraries back in the 80's/90's charging for scene prods on disk? Remember buying assassins disks from adverts out the back of AF? I remember WOA show in UK with stands selling copies of Jesus on E's, 9 Fingers etc way into mid 90's.
If someone can give an argument as to how what Crest is doing is different to what PD libraries etc did for years then I'm all ears...

defbase: yes, a lot of people were pissed about PD libraries making money off of their prods.. :)
i really appreciated the demos on cu amigas cover cd's , amiga format claimed that they didnt want to put demos on their cd because of demogroups using copyrighted material..
cant say that i care much about welle:erdball putting a couple of my demos on their cd's. i know puterman was angry because he didnt want his demos to be associated with their crappy music, but i dont mind my stuff being spread a bit more

want waar draait het om in de scene? cheap succes?
defbase: Yeah, I agree. People should've been using their ADSL connections in the 80's/90's instead of giving money to PD libraries.
i'm sure Crest is doing a great job and he's into that not because of $$ // however, he could'n'should have asked.. on the other hand, demoscene is a bit communist, sharing the same wealth=) -- so i dont think not asking for permission is a deadly sin..
Since he isn't on pouet for nearly 2 years now you should better contact him per mail.
Maybe we should start boycotting some demo parties which became very commercialized. OOPS. ;)

i haven't really read this thread, but the same happend with the "diskmag"-cd crest is selling for 5 euro.. he could have asked whether that is okay (and it would surely have been okay) - but without asking.... of course the "diskmag"-cd is also available for download, but that's something different...
people, we are in the enterntainment industry! It's not about money, it's about power, girls and drugs.
Therefore I think crest should have asked (everyone would have said yes anyway). I may put a product "out there" for everyone, but I still want to maintain some sort of control (or at least knoweldge) about it's life.
On ANY..and I mean ANY, occation where people make money on other people's stuff, those money should go to those who made stuff unless the creators of stuff have decided that that money can go to other stuff!
