Prizes on TG 2019
category: parties [glöplog]
Not that I care much about prizes in general, but take a look at this:
Gaming prizes (all prizes in euro):
1st place PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds: ~1320 €
1st place League of Legends: ~1650 €
Counter Strike Global Offensive:
1st prize ~1650 €
2nd prize ~1100 €
3rd prize ~550 €
Creative prize:
Demo: ~330 €
Freestyle music: ~550 €
Game dev: ~550 €
Something wrong with this picture?
Let me just say one thing:
The Gathering and the Demoscene are not friends.

Have you considered that gaming is just generally a lot more popular and profitable, and that The Gathering hasn't been that popular of a venue for demoscene activity in years anyway?
I'm not really surprised.
I'm not really surprised.
lynn: yes I have considered that. Too bad. As (some) demosceners are the ones who make demos, don't get shit back. I don't even understand why they give out prizes for demoscene stuff. They should dropped it altogether. If I won at TG 2019, I would not accept the prize. I would say put it up your ***...
so make freestyle music, not demos!
also, the lack of Fanta is appalling!
lynn: but, forgot to say, I don't see how gaming can be more profitable? Yes its profitable when they give out such prizes. It's not profitable if they switch it all around.
Unlike the demoscene, the videogame industry is a multi-billion dollar industry.
Who made the videogame industry? Who made and still makes videogames? What tools did videogame makers use in the past and present?
the videogame makers?
If I'm not mistaken, videogame makers use demo tools like Unity and Unreal Engine! I think there was a thread about that on Pouet. Maybe we can resurrect it for further discussion?
I’m sure TG orgas will welcome your constructive and helpful comments
Well gaming is quite profitable from developers perspective if your game become popular all you need is to make little tweaks to it every year and keep on generating income.
One would assume that if TG started getting lots of good demos again, the prizes would go up. It doesn't make sense to throw €1500 at a competition where you don't even know if you get any entries.
(PS: I believe rudi's last demo at TG was 2007?)

Don't know much about esports, but I'm pretty sure winning the CSGO tournament is a more impressive display of skill than the winning demo at last year's TG.

That's a bit harsh.
Also, for The Gathering to even have a demo compo, and prizes for it, while the vast majority of the scene goes to Revision, is them being more friendly to the demoscene than could be reasonably expected of them, I'd say.

In that case, sorry for miscommunicating. The point I was trying to make is, Qb is a decent firstie (I assume it was a firstie, anyway), but eSports is competitive as all hell, and I'm quite sure you won't make it to first place with what is comparable to a "decent firstie" level performance.
sounds ok to me : who keeps TG going , not the 30 is sceners around
jobe: I will also point out that when TG tried really hard to attract demosceners, huge amounts of drama ensued. You can look up the threads on e.g. Scene.org Awards if you feel there is too little hostility in your life :-)
Sesse: That is true. (I hardly remember, but I think there's a good reason for it).
Several other including myself suggested changing the dates, but that was dismissed. The idea was to get more sceners to TG. This may also be the reason for the lack of entries @ TG. Imho, this is still a problem after 18+ years.

lots of people having no idea how the video game industry and commercial events work itt.
well, not lots, but a few.
or maybe just Rudi, i dunno
TG is obviously not going to change dates, Revision is obviously not going to change dates. And TBH, it's not about the dates—it's not like sceners come in droves to Dreamhack either, which doesn't conflict with Revision at all.
Ignoring the gamestuff having a bigger prize on the music compo is weird... if you're in it for the money you might just release the demo out of compo and the soundtrack on the musiccompo, if you can't release it on both.
I assume this happens because there's like 3 demos, and 30 songs?
