The Piggy rears its ugly head again!
category: general [glöplog]
For the comment just above mine here, elan seems to have forgotten to put a vote with his comment, resulting in a piggy vote. It seems the same is true for keen's comment and it seems cce's simple announcement of a final version also results in a piggy vote.
On another prod, someone may have had trouble running the prod and asked a question, waited for reply, and forgot to revisit the prod page. But the Default Piggy stays.
I've spit venom at this in the past.
Maybe no problem for this prod, on the other hand it's just those few piggies there that keeps it from being much higher than all-time #2594. Actual user votes and nothing else should determine rank. Not automatic Default Piggies.
The problem is that the votes are radio buttons, and that one of the votes is default.
The solution is making it an active vote choice, i.e. click on the button for up, down, or piggy. Some ideas:
1. A button next to Submit saying "Comment without voting" would solve the problem for those wanting to do just that, but would keep the problem of the Default Piggy.
2. A fourth radio button as Default, entitled "Just comment" could do the trick, but will very likely result in fewer actual votes, perhaps 2 less actual votes in this case. A dialog, "Are you sure you don't want to vote?" would solve that.
3. Vote buttons as submit buttons next to Submit might accidentally submit half-written comments as the user decides on the verdict, but at least the voting would be near the Submit button, which is better than now (eliminates forgetfulness), and all votes would be active choices.
I like the last option, 3. Just write a comment and click the appropriate button, easy and clear.

4. Leave it as it is.
Read the comments, ignore the stats.
Stop caring so much about the "vote" counts, systems and rules and mechanisms. Reducing opinions to numbers dumbs you down.
Stop assigning so much importance to some random numbers on the internet.
Um, you know you can add a second comment with a thumb up or down, right?
I want a new rating, and it will be a bunny. It's worth 4 thumbs up and is only available for those who have a POUET EXTRA GOLD PLUS ENTERPRISE SUPER ACCOUNT.
i think the most simple thing is to remove/don't count automatically all votes by users credited in the prod in the same prod, so all accidental piggies or selfvoting(sucks!) will disappears.

Now THERE'S an idea.
:D
I kind of agree with Photon and I'm confused why ranking and competition play such a major role at parties but once a prod appears on Pouet, numbers and votes suddenly should no longer be important...?
Now the impact of a few piggies-meant-as-comments-and-not-as-votes is not that great and so might not warrant a big change to Pouet, but the underlying philosophy is still strange.

This.
i would say +1 to slummy's comment, but, that would be beyond the point!
+i to Slummy. Imaginary internet points.
I give my +1 votes to Kylerean and rez.
If you're saying "sceners don't care about votes", I don't understand what you mean. Pick a bunch of prods with any discussion in it. The statistically most likely topic of that discussion will be the vote that someone left, or how they would place the prod differently in the compo results.
If you're saying "authors don't care about votes", I don't understand what you mean either. Groups spend efforts on finishing prods and there's nothing authors dread more than to be met with four piggies and a thumb up, followed by silence.
Of course we care.
What I do see on Pouet is a streak of obstinate insistence on jaded cynicism in some. You're not that old. Wait until pension, at least?
I like the idea of Pouet as a rather official multiplatform demoscene site. I think that's much better than a lot of separate platform-specific sites. In general, something that reflects the types of compos and parties out there that you would never have heard of otherwise, not to mention that others seem to take it as something special too. Or why would they dedicate their time to it?
Implement option 3, and run a query for the author comments, and we're done. Was there a problem? No.

Who are you to dictate what other people spend their spare time on?
I don't say sceners don't care about votes. I say, caring a lot about votes makes you seem a bit dumb.
I like votes and stats a lot, i am dumb.
I like votes and stats when they tell me I'm great. Usually they don't, so I don't like votes and stats.
You may cry out how votes are irrelevant internet points but it's still a central feature on this site and this is a usability problem the commenting/voting system has. Feel free to split hairs about how much you personally care about it but can we at least establish that it's a bit broken?
I also agree with photon/rez/kylearan. "Comment without vote" would be nice.

Re: dumb. Let's put it this way: I'd much rather see people appreciate the soft, ambiguous, changing, slow qualities of being a human. To tolerate and value vagueness, interpretation, poetry, and that sort of stuff more. Not desire so much the illusion of "hard facts" like numbers and black/white digital, machine-like modeled things.
That doesn't sound like the yzi I know... :). But either way I agree, passionately even.
Still, I don't think recognizing the issue photon outlined necessarily excludes that way of thinking. A usability issue is still a usability issue.

Saling: oh like posting memes and screencap collages?
