Sitting here in RGHQ, it's like being a Pinocchio lookalike contest. In fact, reaching the keyboard is proving to be difficult due our excessive facial protruberances. In the words of Kings Of Tomorrow, "Finally". We hope you enjoy this little ray of sunshine into the dark cave of ST gaming. Chu Chu Rocket is a game of skill, cunning & manic mice. It's Tom & Jerry made into (digital) flesh. Like all the great games the basic premise is simple, but the results are fiendishly addictive. Chu Chu Rocket was originally created by legendary game makers Sonic Team as the first ever network console game for the ill fated DreamCast. We bring 128bit entertainment to your humble 16bit ST! [ requirements ] ============================================================================== You need at least 2MB to run this version of Chu Chu Rocket. This version runs on the following machines: Atari STE Atari TT Atari Falcon It won't work on the STFM due to lack of DMA sound hardware, STFM owners should grab the LITE version of "Chu Chu Rocket" instead. [ glossary ] ============================================================================== Chu - those cute little mice Kapu - that nasty cat Rocket - dome shaped target Spinner - random event generator [ objectives ] ============================================================================== The aim of the game is simple. Guide as many chus into your rocket as possible. Avoid getting kapus into your rocket as they will eat one third of your mice. Creatures have a well defined movement. When they hit a wall, they always turn right. You can divert creatures paths by laying down arrow tiles on the board. Use these to guide mice into your rocket and cats into opponents rockets. If a creature falls into a hole, itwill die. If a kapu moves into a chu, it will eat it. [ controls ] ============================================================================== Chu Chu Rocket supports the following controllers: * Keyboard * Mice * Joysticks * Jaguar Pads * Team Taps Keyboard controls are cursor keys for movement and space for fire. Press 'UNDO' to exit screens in the front end. When using Jaguar Pads, 'Fire A' is the main fire button and 'Fire B' acts as the exit/undo button. To place a an arrow, first move the cursor over the desired tile. Now hold down fire. You will notice your cursor changes into an arrow. Whilst still holding down fire, move in the direction in which you want to the arrow to face. Now release fire and your arrrow will be placed. In puzzle mode you can remove arrows from the board by clicking on them. The control select screen which is presented before starting any game allows you to assign controllers to any of the four players, or to set them to be computer controlled. The control select features intelligent assignment - it will not allow you to select a combination of incompatible controllers. For example, if you chose a mouse as a controller, all players currently under joystick control will be switched to a more suitable controller type as both mouse and joystick cannot operate simulataneously. [ demo mode ] ============================================================================== If you leave the game inactive whilst in the front end, after a while it will enter demo mode. A random level will be displayed and four computer controlled players will battle things out. This can be useful to watch when learning how the game works. Press fire on any controller to exit demo mode. [ level select ] ============================================================================== After you have chosen your game mode, you will be thrust into the level select screen. Press left or right to choose your stage. You will be shown a preview of the level layout in the bottom right hand corner of the screen. In 'puzzle' mode, you can press up and down to select your world - provided you have unlocked them. To unlock worlds in puzzle mode you have to complete all 25 levels. To leave the level select screen press 'UNDO' or 'Fire B' on jag pads. [ 4p battle ] ============================================================================== This is the main multiplayer game for up to four players. If you haven't got enough friends, you can set up the AI to control some of the players. Your aim is get more mice into your rocket than anyone else. The player with the highest mouse count when the time runs out is the winner. You can only lay down 3 arrows at anyon time. Arrows have a limited life span, and after some time they will start flashing and then disappear. If a kapu hits an arrow from the opposite direction it will cause damage to it. Arrows can only survive two such hits before disappearing. There are two special types of Chus that you should look out for. GOLD CHUS These are worth 50 normal chus, so make every effort to get them into your rocket. PURPLE CHUS These trigger a spinner that cause random events to happen. It is generally advantageous to guide purple chus into your rocket as they can cause misfortune to befall your opponents. The player with the most points when time runs out is the winner. [ team battle ] ============================================================================== Co-operation is the key to success inthis 2 vs 2 game. This mode plays exactly like 4p battle except that their are two teams competing for the chu chu championship. The first team consists of players one and two, and their rockets are coloured yellow and blue. Team two is players three and four and they have the green and red rockets. Work with your teammate to collect the most chus and guide kapus into your opponents rockets. Each chu is worth one point and gold chus are worth 50 points. The team with the most points when time runs out is the winner. [ puzzle ] ============================================================================== Use your brain! In puzzle mode it is your mind not your fingers that has to work fast. Your mission; guide the chus into the rocket. Avoid kapus and avoid holes. Along the bottom of the screen all the arrows available to you on this level are displayed. Work out the route to rocket, and place down the arrows from the available set. Once you are confident you have the correct path laid out, move your cursor to the left of the screen and click on 'GO' to set the level in motion. If you want to speed through the level you can click on 'FFWD'. If you realise you have made a mistake and want to restart the level, click on 'REDO'. To leave puzzle mode, click on the 'EXIT' button. Once you have started the level ( after clicking 'GO' or 'FFWD' ) you cannot edit the arrow layout. Before the level is in motion, you can remove arrows by clicking on them, pressing fire b ( or UNDO or right mouse button ), or you can simply click on 'REDO' to reset the entire level. If you manage to complete all the puzzle levels you will be rewarded with a secret bonus. [ stage challenge ] ============================================================================== Stage Challenge level presents a series or live action puzzles. Like 'puzzle' mode, you have to use your brain to work out the solution to each level, but this time you have think on your feet and place arrows whilst the game is in motion. Unlike 'puzzle' mode, you don't have a limited set of arrows; you can place down three different arrows at any one time like in '4p battle' and 'team battle' modes. In this mode, different levels have different objectives and you will have to complete a number of different tasks to become master of the stage challenge level. If you do manage to complete all stage challenges levels you will be rewarded with a secret bonus. Stage Challenge mode can be played solo, but it best played with a friend - co-operate to complete each task. When each stage challenge level starts, you have 3 seconds to familarise yourself with this level. During this time none of the chus or kapus move, you can move your pointer about but you can't place arrows. It gives you a chance to work out what to do and get into position before the action begins.
