too buggy... can see only the half of the demo (P4 1.5GHz + Gf3 + Detonators 41.09 )... sometimes 1-2 fps, sometimes screen explodes...

(all together now): "Probably because you own a GF4 MX, you cheapskate!"
added on the 2002-12-15 20:31:01 by Shifter Shifter
It's a pitty I don't know anyone having a GF3. When the cheap GF4MX solution came into the market, GF3 were never released anymore and the older were sold. But this cheap sollution doesn't have pixel shaders and shit that are needed I guess. Many friends have 4MXs now, but you have to buy the full GF4 to have the pixel shader feautures, which nobody bought cause pure GF4 are too expensive. One friend was thinking to get a 4MX, oneday me too, but I tried to search for a GF3 instead. There is no demo that doesn't run in 2 but runs in 4MX, but few new ones I would love to see, which want's 3 and doesn't run on 4MX. Ok,. ok,. you got what I want to say. It's a pitty, damn Nvidia, I blame the company for not beeing able to find a cheap GF3 now and succeed in watching some prods :P

At least put some screenshots!

it crashed my pc during loading (80%), using
a GF4Ti with 41.09 drivers. please bugfix, it
seems to be worth to watch it!
Optimus: a GF4Ti4200 is now available for 150€, the GF3-Chip seems to be no longer produced, and many new demos need Shaders to run. Perhaps you should upgrade, or we coders should make an alternative .exe for these people, without the effects that are responsable for the look of our demos.

1 info
The reason it doesnt work with latest drivers is because of a DRIVER BUG!
So all of you yelling that he should patch the demo better yell at nVidia to patch their drivers! Lockup of the pc/bluescreen/reboot should NEVER happen with correct drivers, no matter what you code!

Loading time is long but its worth the wait. The graphics and atmosphere is great and I hope that other new demos will take advantage of vs and ps too. I not sure what to think of the "depth of field" effect though. I would like to be able to turn it off in a final version :)
rulez added on the 2002-12-16 01:53:45 by obi1 obi1
i think it's stupid to make a demo that demands hardware that isn't very common, atleast if you don't give some option to turn hardware-dependant effects off or emulate them in some way.. i don't have a gf3 or similar, and even if i did i think it's stupid to code something for a specific card instead of using portable code that can run on similar cards, like the radeon-series from ati (which i am seriously considering buying). i hope to see this demo some day, since the people who has seems to like it, but as i said.. make demos for hardware that people already own. rant rant rant rant.. :)
added on the 2002-12-16 03:25:30 by gloom gloom
wow not bad, the depth of field effect works quite well and the scenes (except the last one) are very well done, i liked it. (i dont know if it was the last scene, the sound went off during the girl running towards the guy)
what i dont understand is the loading time.... what on earth can take so long??

Excellent modelling! Nice to see Cocoon in back in the circles and doing the stuff they are best in (Shad is still one of my fave 3d demos).

And for the "I don't have geforce" whiners - you simply can't do stuff like this on a old hardware. Demos are not like games that have to support all differend gfx cards and work on all possible configurations.
rulez added on the 2002-12-16 10:46:29 by melw melw
cool! 1st kudos for doing a gef3+ prod. (and heck, it ran & looked really smooth here.. i recommend people with a ti46 to enable supersampling).
the modelling was definitively nice altough a little bit cliche.. neat music, altough i don't like guitars and the style it sounded "well done".
(oh and worked nicely with latest drivers...loading times are a bit high.. gluBuildMipMaps maybe? :) )

Just a little precision about loading time...
Due the fact the demo size had to be in the range of 10Mb, and regarding to the mass of textures, the textures are compressed in DXT5 at loading...
We'll release a version which loads faster, with precompressed textures (but which will take more place on hd)...
We'll release an avi version too, for thoses who don't have recent hardware :)...
Nice to see you soon !

in first i want to mention the rules of the demo competition at SOTA2K2 : the rules was GeForce3ti (a GeForce4200ti was used to show the demos), so no problem about the hardware specific code for me. Don't whining about MX cards, it's cheap gamers cards, never buy it for watching demos.

about the prod, the loading time of 5 minutes sucks, and the loading bar is like windows update with a modem : unispirated and boring. why dont you made a little interesting effect intead ?
music, not music, howling on noize is not my taste, i hate this but respect it
code is good, rythm good, hard work on textures and synchros
textures looks similar in style with Shad2 demo. perhaps too much low poly 3D some times?
the howling clown is well done and remebers the movie/book 'IT'
little girl is cute, except the blood wich ooze
And all this blood and bad feeling makes me ill, vomit, hey Cocoon members : life is beautiful, flowers, rabbits ... take a look to the Teletubbies for inspiration next time ;-)
dont see this before going to bed
nightmarish demo forbidden to childrens under 18. pigface because bad feelings.
I haven't seen this yet, but I must say that if it doesn't run on current nvidia drivers - I probably won't anyway.
I really like it that people finally start doing things for current hardware, but telling people to downgrade to a specific old driver seriously limits your viewer base.

Lots of work.
I don't like the music at all (whereas I loved both shade 2's tracks).
The loading is unbearable.
I don't even want to try to launch it on my PC.
worst the watching, but for me one time will be enough.
Nytrik : IMHO the purpose of demos is not to compete with games, it became useless long time ago.
It is time to view demos as a form of art, not only technical demonstration.
added on the 2002-12-16 14:08:12 by neurox neurox
here we go again, the old so-called 'art' argument. This is proof that technical demonstrations are very possible, and lets face it, i'm sure most people would rather watch something that pushes current hardware, than watch flat shaded cubes or a crappy noise pattern. Its good to see someone putting a lot of time and effort into a demo... not just 1 hr and calling it art.
Sdw, it runs on mine with gf4 ti4200 with latest nvidias.

Lots of work. Lots of good work. Nice modelling and facial animation, not so good walk&run animation. Some baaad design (like the tvs the girl's running around). Cocoonish-theme, no "clear" story so it becomes boring, and frustrating at the end. Awful music. Stupid loader, over-excessive-loading time (i won't even try to run it on my pc because of this)... Hope it'll be the last one in this style.

Well, WinXP Pro here on a VIA Apollo Pro 133T and a P3/1466 with 512mb ram, Geforce 4 Ti 4200/64 and 30.82 detonators. Guess what, it starts playing and right after the handicapped/crucified little girl, it freezes. Moments later WinXP says that it lost(?) the vga card and switches on a generic vga driver, requiring a reboot. Wow! I didn't know demos could do that! :-P

Yeah a great demo ... i was impressed on the big screen, unfortunatly i can't run it on my Athlon 2000+/GF4ti4200/512Mo, but it's seem to be a known bug who 'll be fix one day =)

next cocoon release in 2 years or before ? =)
rulez added on the 2002-12-17 14:54:40 by cyb0rg cyb0rg

for slow loading times they said 200 textures.

objective points:

* great modelling and movement
* lip sync was quite bad
* original music (for a demo, that is)
* lots of ideas borrowed from metal videos

subjective points:

* i do like horror movies and stuff but this time it was too excessive
* i dont really dig metal and this kind of dull style at all

thus, thumb down as i cant enjoy it to save my life.

however, if this was for a review, i would definately thumb it up, lots of work (at prize giving they told it was in the making for 2 years) and overall style and visuals are well balanced, good sync, dynamic etc.

ok, so perhaps no thumb at all...

F***in' hell! Nice textures and models and a good soundtrack. Using hw features can be stunning but still, it would be nice to be able to disable all hw dependent effects so all sceners will be able to watch it. Would be sad if some demos would be only GeForce and some only Radeon if you know what I mean. The only bad thing with the prod is as shash said, animation. The girl running up the stairs looks like she was animated by a girl her own age (bad that is).

okay managed to get it running with 30.82 drivers, but it crashed after the 'crucified rag doll' scene..
added on the 2002-12-18 08:01:59 by bhead bhead
Wow, this demo is REALLY buggy.
I tried running it on my WinXP install with 41.09. In fullscreen it quits at 40%, in window it gets to 80% and then I get illegal operation.
I then tried under my win98 bott with 29.42 drivers. Now it actually started, music played but screen was just garbage graphics, and then it locked up.
So I downloaded 30.82, installed, ran the demo, and now I actually got to see a cocoon logo-part, then after 10 seconds - hardlock.
A friendly suggestion is to try to testrun your demos on multiple configurations during the development phase.

It maked by Windows 2k core dumps at first attempt, but after some 30.82 patching it worked fine. This is a very kewl demo, that actually uses my hardware so that's nice.
I'm bored to see games that routinely use my hardware in a nicest way than most recent demos (NoOneLiveForever 2 has awesomely detailed characters with finely crafted textures), so that one at least restore the balance.
Loading time is boring anyway ;)

I don't see why the demos shouldn't use new hardware. It's a way to try something new, and demonstrate what they are able to.
Anyways, a thumb up for this production. Even though there are a LOT of textures and it's 10 Mb, I still think it is great. Very dark!

What I also is that there is something to look at, if you watch it several times. Try to notice the bodies hanging when the girl runs in the end. Very nice job Cocoon :)

took ages to load on my machine (~6 minutes, that's about as long as the total running time of an average demo). and then crashed after the title screen (duron 650, radeon8500).

anyway, one would expect demos to be higher quality by now. let's wait for the final version...

wow i finally managed to find someone with a recent geforce to watch this,

as the previous shad demos, it features an amazing quantity of graphics, really really few demos have such amount of good graphics. just for that, respect to you cocoon for taking the time to make such big demos.

as itself, i don't like the demo very much, here and here some graphical flaws that weren't in the previous shads, the music isn't my cup of tea, even if it has nothing wrong, the story is confuse and the ending scene is very disapointing (but you can fix it in the final version :)

still i love the rendering techniques used at some times, i would have loved it, if it was using this weird dream/nightmare rendering during the whole demo.

Really great production from cocoon again!
Would maybe suggest a new group-slogan like:
Cocoon - The DARK Side Of The Scene!
;-DD

Really 'horror-style' scenes like in previous demos! HEAVY graphics (typical cool nytrik style!! The name says it all!! A Quality man!!)
Hardrock music fits very nice to the whole atmosphere...(although it's not my real taste of music though!)

For me my personal favourite - speaking of perfect fitting music (4 different tracks!!) with atmospheric dark horror-style - still is SHAD 1 !! So I'm _really_ missing a win32 version of this great old demo...for future preservation!! :-) (Hint! Hint! Hint! ;-)))) )

Aynways...Cocoon is doing a GREAT job with their prods and I really hope to see LOTS more of various releases in the future from them!
They simply rule! (group-members as well as releases! ;-) )

After a long X-mas break here is the fixed version of our winning demo presented at SOTA 2002 :
http://cocoon.planet-d.net/raw/!Raw_Beta.zip
We know that not every one has a g-force 3 therefore we also did an avi of the demo
http://cocoon.planet-d.net/raw/RawConfessions_Cocoon.avi
We included :
-Some more effects
-Improved loading system
Mega thanks to Guille for this hard work
Enjoy ... and see you round

The general mood was nicely Cocoonish, I enjoyed this demo a lot. If there's something you need to work on, it's the character animation.. now it looks quite harsh. smoother movements would be a great thing for your next killerdemo.

It really didn't touch me at all ... didn't even manage to wake me up at the party place. And when looking at the avi, i admire the work, the lipsynch, the touches of design that make the demo constantly be dynamic (multiply layered dynamism, like this zombie head speaking over a highly scrolling background, or the image morphing at the beginning of the "kids" scene)

But there's basically nothing in it I enjoy. Perhaps i'm prejudiced against the end of XXth century look and derivative ideas.

okay, a well deserved thumb at last.
final version works okay, no real slowdowns on athlon1700+/384ddr/gf3ti200/det42.01, which is not too surprising, because the guys really tried to keep the polycount as low as they could (some of the constructions in the title scene are just cylinders with alpha texture, the staircase that the little girl runs on is actually flat, etc..). but most of the modeling and texturing is really cool, head and shoulders above the current scene 'standarts'. the music sounds somewhat fucked-up, like badly mixed or overcompressed, or dunno what.. still it's an ace track, and it's not ripped which is certainly a bonus nowadays. 8) most of the synchs could be improved, there are moments when the music goes all manic, while the camera is just slowly flying thru some corridors... but the talking head is what really steals the show, even despite the fact that it's not really lipsynched, it's just opening its mouth in a fixed pattern... 8)

HELL YEAH!
Watched the video.

Downpoints:
- Lipsync is actually more amusing, than stunning.
- The screenmorphs are sucky a bit.
- The kids' animation was underdone.
- No _real_ musicsync.

BUT:
- Totally awesome gfx-work, as in modelling, textures and animation.
- Cool music
- The 'hospital'-scene was done excellent!
- I really love the fact that this demo is totally orthogonal to the usual style of demos.

SIR YES SIR I WANT MORE SIR!

I'm surprised that DiamonDie hasn't yet commented how this production crashes on her WinXP with onboard graphics and therefore sucks.
The one thing that stops me from giving this a thumb up is the music, if that is its real name.. The visuals are stunning but the mus.. eh, sound is really, really bad. I had to turn off the music to be able to watch through the entire demo.

This one is the house rocker of the last months. I absolutely love it.
Agressive music, outstanding 3d scenes, great texture work, great scripting, etc. etc.
And last but not least: It continues with the scary/doom style of shad/shad 2. I absolutely dig that
All my respects!

ok for me...

The best points are:

* Technique
* Modells+ilumination
* Overall Idea

The Worst Points:
* Lack of interest cause has very poor sincronism, and in some sequences the music has nothing to do with the action. I'm not saying the music is bad. but there's no relation between music changes and action.

* Has no design or at least a neat story line.

Conclusion, good weapons for massive destruction, but the design storyline work behind the code is not at the same level.

For example, demo Colouir 14+ has a overall CLEAR theme, easy to swallow and has identity.
I know it's true I was expecting so much than this from Cocoon, I'm being so exigent. Sorry

Here's my thumb, reasons follow:

1) Too fucking long loading time, and it doesn't stop until the demo is over
2) Leaves a process hanging that consumes about 20+ mb of ram
3) The poorly animated kids at the end of the demo, the demo would've been a lot better without them

Me and myself haven't understood where the hell are there pixel shader used ;P We just can't recognise it and we really wish to see how pixel shaders look like. In the face? Where??? Despite all the hard work that has obviously gone into this prod, I didn't like it at all.

- insanely long load time.
- didn't work in my GF3, had to wait for the 9700 to see it (without anything that warrants such requirements)
- music tries to be powerful but turns out just loud and noisy
- graphics have style - bad style. Try to be stanic, but end up just looking ugly.
- interesting effects or techniques are non-existant.
- no flow or rythm to speak of.
- it all just seems to be way more ambitious than the authors could actually create.

Essentially, a huge pile of crappy stuff put together. Sorry for the bashing.

technically perfect, it competes honorably with the latest video games, but lacks some originality ...
i always have the impression that the cocoon guys try to continue the Shad series, but it lacks the particular mood that brought us Shad 1 & 2, although it is replaced by blood, gore, manga-like bomb-babies ; not the best idea for this prod imho

however, a technically perfect production, which should reside on all dark and noisy demo lovers' hard disks

Sure. We know TV feeds us lies and porno makes us sinners. There is no god and we all suffer.

Pretty good for 15 year old french guys with teen-angst forever.

Kill yourselves now - don't make demos about it.

Sure, lotsa effort can be seen in this one, tho it also makes the creators seem more stupid and they show us blood and zombies "singing".

TRULY original.

I think originality is what really makes this demo great, so I disagree with Visu. Eventhough the style may not be liked by everyone (not everyone is into these gory visions), but still you HAVE to admit that Cocoon is the only group who manages to do this style properly, which makes this kind of a production a very rare phenomena. If you mean that they repeat themselves... well, we know several groups who do that :)

I had to watch the avi version, but specs aside I was very impressed by the modelling, graphics and the general concept. Typically dark Cocoon style, but more chilling and less tacky than similarly themed releases.

The music was ok, but I think more atmosphere could have been achieved with an incidental or more downbeat soundtrack.

Very nice and extremly underrated (like thumbs down for 'it does not run here')

+ dark theme
+ music
+ pale bald woman
+ graphical details e.g. screens and t-shirts

- too short ;)

I really would like to know, what exactly is written on the last boys t-shirt. Some here suggested it was 'My dad sent me to piss the world off' but if you are looking closer, you'll see that the 3rd word only has three letters.
Even after doing a capture to zoom at it I can't tell what's the third word on that t-shirt. Anyone who knows it, please reply.

At the end it's for sure a thumb up.

Should be noted that I'm watching this in 2013 .. but .. visuals are kinda good and interesting, movements are a bit choppy in the way of the era.

Unfortunately the soundtrack kills it completely for me, and the rest does not compensate enough. Mostly the whole experience left me a bit confused.

What cce said. Possibly the most graphically and visually interesting 3D scene based demo of the era. Loses the steam gradually though and for the last minute or so you're just waiting for it to end already. Also perhaps features the first (albeit subtle) depth of field implementation on GPU hardware in a demo? Any earlier ones?
