One of the best demos for C64 in this millenium.

something's wrong with the loader. on a real c64, it says "you are trying to run this demo on an emulator". it offers a drive test that fails on two different real drives (1541, VC1541) and succeeds in VICE. you can probably guess the rest... the demo itself crashes after a while on the real thing, while it runs just fine on the emu.

anyway... great fx, great gfx, great sound, thumbs up.

At the beginning I didn't knew about 64ever nor about their long awaited demo. Then I had seen the thumbs and big words on this site, wowa I said, it looks promising. Downloaded the thing and sat down to read the note. These guys are DEMOfreaks, they say it big, doing it because they know how they would like a DEMO looking like! Crazy freax yeaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

And as I run the demo, the beginning blowed me up! It was good enough to keep me warm, till the Doomsday part it was amazing. So much graphical work, great effects (first rotozoomer, zoomer fade ala boost), great design and flaw with the music, fast paced, nice white haired girls :)
Then, especiallly at the 2nd side, felt like the next parts where taking more time, making it more boring waiting for the next effects,. they didn't faded fast to each other,. but the first impression of the beginning and the lot of gfx and good code and big work kept the feeling. Thank god the final outro showing pics of each part from the beginning and credits made my day again.

Continuous flaw trackmo, only if the next parts at the 2nd side mainly did take less time. But it really made my day. Reading their story at the note also and knowing now it was worth the 3 years time..

Sometimes new good productions are making my day and can bring people back. These days I had months to code. My only project my 1st CPC demo. The two CPC demos released plus this C64 one made me wanting to continue with demomaking. These prods are what I call refreshing...

What I want to say is that it's fucking best!!! Till the beginning I couldn't beleive what I was seeing! Story, design, gfx, flaw, effects all fited perfectly. I wish I could share my feelings with the creators (perhaps I could send them an email? :) but their demo touched me and made me thinking various feelings..

Now I know what to vote. Gimme mags, Domination, Vandalism News, Sceneworld, Attitude 2 fill the charts. These guys deserve it!!!

Optimus

P.S. Sorry for my enthousiasm...

Short verdict is that it's brutal. Long one is that it's *really* brutal so why are you reading this and not watching it? =-)

i have transferred it a few times, so far it has fucked up on my c128d (this i would have expected), on two c64's with 2 different 1541's and on my sx64.
i can see that some hard work has been put into this, i am very impressed by vip's effort, i just wish he would keep away from the titty pixelling for a while.

the negative things are that i cant get it to work on my c64, that a few effects are used two times in different ways and that the concept seems to get lost somewhere along the way. but anyhow, this is one damn good demo with a bit of an own style

*sigh* so here are the insructions, please do try them if you have problems. The loader is very fast, but it's unfortunatelly very sensitive. TO ENSURE THAT THE DEMO WORKS ON REAL C64 DRIVES DO THIS: 1. FORMAT BOTH DISK SIDES USING SLOW FORMAT: (OPEN1,8,15,"N0:NAME,ID":CLOSE15) 2. USE THE SAME DRIVE FOR FORMAT/TRANSFER/RUNNING OF THE DEMO 3. TRANSFER THE D64 USING STAR COMMANDER SET TO NORMAL TRANSFER SPEED 4. IGNORE THE EMULATOR DETECTION MESSAGE, IT'S FAULTY. 5. RUN THE DRIVE TEST. IF IT PASSES, YO! THE DEMO SHOULD WORK. 6. YOU ARE LUCKY GUY, RUN THE DEMO AND ENJOY!

Love this one!

Here's my post from CSDB:

Finally this demo has been released - especially after following the production a little (due to Vip being a Padua member as well), I could not wait to see the final result.

I simply love it. Great style and design, the mood is almost carried consistently throughout the demo. The transitions and the timing (music & effects) are great.

Also the introductory story line is quite nice - unfortunately it seems to end after the beginning of the story (the girl is sucked into the computer) - we seem to be stuck inside the computer together with her. I was sort of expecting some type of continuation or ending for the story ;-)

Great work, Vip and Raven are showing how to blend code, music and graphic to a unique design. It would be great to be able to creat moods and introduce more storystelling within future Padua demos as well.

Somehow I don't get why a coder can rant so obsessedly about a fast loader that sucks that hard... I seriously doubt that a normal 2bit irq loader without ATN or such crucial disk controller timings wouldn't have been enough.

Anyway... the music was somewhat too empty, but the demo itself was really enjoyable. No 4x4, a consistent theme (woohoo) and all that. And even non-trivial effects. Yeah, thumbs up.
rulez added on the 2002-12-04 21:57:27 by kb_ kb_
why is the disk written any differently when star commander transfers in slow mode? the actual rotation and write speed within the disk drive is absolutely the same, isn't it? does it depend on the track orientation?

kb's right about this... the hurdle to make this demo run on my real c64 is a bit too high, i don't think i'll bother.

it's funny how emulator-friendly this demo is given the amount of trickery it seems to do...

Hello :)

First, thanks to everyone for your feedback on the demo - we really appreciate it and we'll try to deal with the addressed (democontentrelated) issues in the next project(s)...

Back to Insomnia though: as many of you stated, there is a serious problem. First, on most c64s apparently, the demo will erroneously detect an 'emulator'. Please ignore that. What is worse however, is that the drivetest (and thus the demo) fails.

We're aware of this and we'd absolutely love to fix it, but - and here's the irony - the error doesn't happen on our machines. Not on mine, nor on Raven's (he has 6 different configs), nor on Lax's. So I hope you'll understand that figuring this out is going to take some time, but we're definately working on it.

We apologize for the inconvenience, and hopefully, we can present you a version which *does* work properly on c64/c128. In which case you definately shouldn't hold back to try it on the real thing.

Thanks for your time :)

Well, I need that demo on real machine. I'll be showing it at Forever 2003 party in march next year so I really can't afford bugs ;-). First I tried fast approach and it crashed on disk tests and on the other side of the demo, but after this "tricky" transfer it worked ok.
added on the 2002-12-04 22:37:23 by CreaMD CreaMD
Great stuff, many effects, good sound. Together with Soiled Legacy surely the best you can get for a C64! Runs also fine in my emulator.
added on the 2002-12-05 03:34:37 by Crest Crest
Wow. I don't know where to begin. This demo was amazing. So many great pics, transitions, effects. This sets the standard for demos for the coming year, IMHO.
rulez added on the 2002-12-05 07:18:34 by SixOfDLoC SixOfDLoC
I guess it deserved the second place at X01. Some of the hype yesterday made me think it should have beaten Soiled Legacy in the compo, but I think I prefer that one.

The effects are mostly good, the story is (as in 98% of the other demos that try the story approach) forgotten after the intro, the graphics are technically nice, but with the usual motives (girls) and the music is also done in a competent way.

It's a good demo, but I guess the extremely positive reactions have a lot to do with the low quality and quantity of this year's releases.

CreamD, your method didn't work for me either, I tried 3 different drives on 2 64's. It also didn't run on my 2 C128D's.
*sigh*
Did I mention that I liked it very much on the emulator? ;-)

Six. Soiled Legacy had more effects and more advance but how many ppl here remember what was in it? And yeah the demo hasn't that much story as it could have (that idea about being sucked into computer is very nice), but the demo at least have uncomparably consistent design far above today's standarts, no blank screens on loading parts, superb music. Who is "wasting" time on animations on bitmpap today to show them only for once? Last time I've seen something like that it was last Century and Censor Design ruled at that time ;-)).

There's another method to get it to run: Convert the d64 to zipcode files and unzip them on the C64. That worked for me. :-)

Soiled legacy had much more variaety of effects, parts where changing through each other much faster. Insomnia started fine at the beginning but I found the duration of parts a bit longer at the 2nd disk..
Didn't like in Soiled legacy that the music is not continuous, and it is the thing that makes Insomnia great in my eyes: Continous consistent music theme, very well combined with the parts&story, especially in the first disk, sort of like Second Reality. Soiled legacy had many small musics, but at the end of few parts they just faded out. Not the great continuouation of Insomnia. But I know it's hard to find continuous music themes which also change mood and style at each 10 seconds or something, Second Reality style to fit a well designed trackmo. Perhaps slower changes in music made some parts of Insomnia necessary to take a bit longer than they should. Preety hard to find a good music to fit such trackmo designs (I may possibly get soonish one special tune for my planned CPC trackmo demo though, with changes, which is a conversion of a favorite C64 demo tune btw,.. don't say which ;) Also, Insomnia gfx themes were more original and much more work imho than Soiled Legacy. Both are my latest C64 favorites anyways..

This is really a KICKASS demo...
Great style, great show, great presentation!

I agree that it was a bit sad that the intro-girl story wasn't really finished at the end. As for such a story-telling-demo it would have been a must of course to 'solve' this in the end! ;-)

Anyways...really GREAT effects without having to use 4x4 typical boring code...and fitting music all through! (although I normally prefer more 'melodic oldschool style' a bit more! maniacs of noise or vibrants rule forever! ;-) )

Anyways...Keep it up guys...

Explaininh myself: "Who is "wasting" time on animations on bitmpap today to show them only for once? Last time I've seen something like that it was last Century and Censor Design ruled at that time ;-)). "

That was meant to point out the 8 phases eye-blinking bitmap animation in Insomnia. I never said Solied Legacy had animations and I respect all the work put in that demo, but as I was on X-2001 and I saw both demos presented, Insomnia (even when the presentation was so spolied) moved me more intensively.

Hi.

After a few days of hard work and testing by a few volunteers (for which our thanks!), we can now give you the fixed version (v1.1) of Insomnia.

Now most people should be able to enjoy our demo the way it was intended to - it won't work 100% with drive clones (eg. Oceanic) but on everything else, the demo should work fine.

Get Insomnia v1.1 now on www.demodungeon.com and later on at www.c64.sk ... and have fun! Soundwise, the experience should be a lot better now. Cheers and thanks again for the motivating words.

Perhaps we should wake and changes would pop up suddenly (Like me driving from the end to the 5-6th gloppers position out of nothing ;-)

Nice demo, but too much problems on several drive-systems. More than one version had be made of this demo to have finally a running version on most systems... It almost smells to a real emulator-programmed demo, no real c64-spirit/soul.

@RoleLamer: Sorry about this delayed response, but it's hard to respond to ignorant people who judge without knowing or asking about the facts.

Fact was that on our MANY c64 configurations (old drive, new drive, old c64, new c64, c128 1 and 2Mhz mode), systems from all 64ever members in fact, the demo worked splendid. No hitches, no screwups, nothing. So naturally we were irritated by the fact that ironically, the first version was easier to access on emu than on the real thing.

Fact was that everything was done on c64 except the file transfer, which went via xfer on pc, since we really couldn't rely on the immense speed of the regular postal service from Israel to Belgium and vice versa. We even an anti-emu opening part, because of our aversity to the things - even though we understand that most people these use these things instead of the live machine.

Anyway, those are the facts. So how dare you accuse us of having no c64 spirit? Or soul for that matter? Next time, inform yourself properly before giving a thumbs down based on untrue reasons.

Bah. And I thought people would like to read an extensive notefile detailing the story... next time, a 0.25k note with an ASCII graphic and credits.

Great choice for coup de cour. I still really love this demo.

Features some of my favorite graphics on the C64. I really enjoy the soundtrack as well, very good thematic structuring going on with the different themes.

Rewatched this now with DualSID installed and headphones. Still fooking amazing. A bit fiddly to get it to run though (speedloaders, drive type, reu etc. w/ 1541U2) but that's life.

this was probably the first "modern" c64 demo I watched and it definitely left an impression on me. hard to believe it's almost 15 years old now, but I think it has aged pretty well.

Just rewatched this, the demo that was my 'gateway drug' to the demoscene.
And in comparison with recent C64 demos in my eyes it hasn't aged at all, awesome sync and non cheesy story held together by good graphics, great code -
no 4x4 effects and finally incredible music for the second part by Jeff.

When I had just gotten my first c64, someone sent me a box of disks, and this was on one of the floppies. The first demo I ever watched, in 2006.

Fond memories, and still a very good demo <3
