Nice ,even if I don't know what are the limitations of the MSX1.

Overflow on MSX.. that was definitively unexpected :-) Good job!

That was quite cool surprise and great first attempt at a different machine. The effects are very well done, but I especially like the flow/presentation and really good music.

We have these hardware limitations, you know? You can't just come and break them! That is absolutely crazy!

One note: it doesn't start with a Canon V-20 + Megaflashrom SCC 512k + DOS2 combo.

nice one

Really great job, especially if you consider that MSX machines don't react the same when you try to push the hardware to its limits. A real nightmare for coders :-).

Great demo, great new MSX stuff. But I couldn't get it to work on Toshiba HX-10, PAL 50Hz 64kB machine, with the Nowind interface.
BB Image
I need to try again with an actual floppy drive. Maybe Nowind is taking up some bytes? But the error message is about CPU speed, not memory?

Thanks you guys for the nice comments.

@Breeze,fyrex,izy, and others with message like the screenshot just above:
IO requires precise timing: exactly 313 scanlines, each one w/ 228 cpu-cycles
(btw last scene runs w/o sync: code is constant time 71364c./frame)
When beta-testing, compatibility issues came...
Some are fixed. Ex: runs on TurboR which adds cycle when outing to vdp(!)
Some others are not. Ex: can't patch NMS8280, 228 & a half cycles/lines WTF!?

If IO does not boot/run/reboot or has glitch(es) on your machine,
feel free to either cry or shout at me, and then thumb down right here.

Very impressive technical stuff on the MSX, quite a few effects that left me wondering "How do they do this on that machine?". Nice!

The demo makes me glad in every aspect -- color selection, smooth feects, anything.

Oh, these transitions are just exquisite. This is one of these cheecky newschool prods that pretend they are oldschool, but just cannot stop adding polish here and there. I have no idea about the technicality of this stuff on MSX, but this is the proper stuff, coming from an 8-bitter. Very cool indeed!

(does not work on my Toshiba HX-10 or Canon V-20)

Hey give me my money back, you crook...

It doesn't work on my Amstrad CPC6128 nor on my Amstrad 6128PLUS...
(haven't tried on my CPC46 yet, though)

Nah, badass prod to show MSX fanboyz were real coders come from.
So much better then the WIP we saw at the µAlchimie 2014...
Very well polished and all... hope you'll show it to us on real hardware and big screen at Alchimie 2015.

So this is a MSX1 Demo? Very impressive!
rulez added on the 2015-03-17 10:35:26 by Exin Exin
It's an MSX demo that currently works on some MSX1 models (and there are dozens of them, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MSX_compatible_computers#MSX), but could probably be patched to support most of them with some more effort. Which could mean anything between a few weeks to several years, who knows. It's a great demo, so I hope Overflow has enough willpower and stamina and help from the worldwide MSX community to add support for all different models. Basically, it's a completely crazy effort, something that MSX sceners have only joked about, because it has been considered rediculously tedious. But now Overflow has already almost done it... or is it just the beginning? ;) Anyway, the effects are something that has never been done on the MSX1, an entirely new category of effects is possible if you're able to accurately sync to scanlines like that. And that's not the only new trick here.

To the MSX community, compatibility has always been a strong part of the scene identity, what it means to use MSX compared to other home computers. So, a demo that doesn't support different models goes against that mentality in a way. Though nowadays there are these people who only use emulators or watch youtube videos... ;)

This is one of the demos I would have loved to see in the actual compo, seeing it fresh without knowing anything beforehand. Like, those fullscreen hires 3d scrollers coming up... what is this!? There are too few magical new effects anymore these days, and reading the technical explanations waters down the fun. It should say WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS
added on the 2015-03-17 20:48:17 by yzi yzi
is there any technical achivments? can someone give us idea?

@unbeliever^x7m

IINM IO is the first MSX1 demo which uses much race again the raster style of programming. Rasters, splitrasters, splitscreen, splitscren on each scanline, sprites multiplexing, no sync by wait for VBL but constant-time code all over one frame,...

IMHO this has not been tried or released before. Because of compatibility issues. IO fixes some issues by auto-patching: sync for openmsx VS msx1 VS msx2 or more, 1 clock VS 2 clocks (cpu<>videochip), standard timing VS slow-down when outing on msx turbo r,... Alas! those patches are not enough (read nfo, despite numerous tests). Still some compatibility issues right now, which might be never solved - on some machines - and even on same machine but different version.

To whom it may concern: Overflow made for me a specially tuned version that works on the two machines (out of three) that have more CPU cycles per frame than what the demo's original version assumed. I'd like all MSX1 owners to actually run the demo instead of just watching videos. You know who you are, I know you're there.

Like Bload cas r?

Definition of 'rulez'. :) It was very nice to see this, and I like the animated lips of the cyborg woman graphic on the chessfloor. It makes you wonder what she is saying. :)

Separate question since MSX was my main computer before Amiga: Are clone sync diffs etc already documented someplace? If you have links.
