This was my entry for the 16K executable music compo at TRSAC '08.

Couldn't find the exact category/compo, though.

heh exactly. are exec zaks prods by pouet means?
added on the 2008-10-21 11:59:01 by comankh comankh
To me, it has few meaning at pouet. There's no real presentation or notes aren't generated. (which makes 4K procedural gfx interresting on this site)
If the production is found in the results-file of the party. Wouldn't it be awkward not to be able to download it too, then? Anyways - feel free to remove it if it doesn't belong here. I've got it anyways ;-)

Not that I WANT to start a discussion, but since when are graphics a presentation, and music not?

It's true, that notes aren't generated. The sound produced by each note triggered is, though. Would calculating notes patterns by an algorithm qualify a music-entry for a 'production' in pouet-terms? Does this rule disqualify intros using predefined 3D objects with rendered textures as well?

This does not belong here indeed and has already been discussed many times.

We don't want people to submit here all their small mod/xm files wrapped in exe files either.

keops: I think we already clarified that - my question was aimed at the quote above regarding "presentation" ;)

I didn't meant that ;)

Puryx has a point here ;)

Keops: I fully understand your arguments, however, since files are not hosted on your servers, wouldn't categorising music/gfx just like all other prods are categorised eliminate the "need" for people that doesn't like that kind of productions, to actually have to be bothered by them?

In my honest opinion, the problem only exists, because there's no actual categories for these type of productions. In fact - why not keep a catalogue of all compo-releases now we're at it? Surely, it would create the need for an extra 100 Mb of diskspace for alle the file_id.diz'es, but I'm sure that wouldn't really have that great an impact on the sites overall performance.

All in all - feel free to remove the entry, I obvisously had it all wrong, when I thought this was a scene-related site and not a 'coders only (unless the code produces music) area' :-p

Punqtured, this discussion has been running on pouet several times. I'm still unsure if Pouet.net V2 will include "support" for all scene-categories, but if not, maybe it should be re-considered :)
I don't want to run that ".exe music does/does not bleong on pouet"-discussion here again - I just wanted to clarify that music is as well a presentation as an image - especially .exe music, since it both involves coding nice sounds in a few kb's as well as making those sounds sound awesome - just like procedural graphicss ;)

thumbs for good arguments! ;)

We need a gfx/music kind of pouet

I don't have particularly strong views for or against this kind of release, but playing devil's advocate for a moment I do feel that if procedural graphics and single routine releases are allowed (128-256bytes) then it's unfair to treat this release as any less of a production.

You can argue that if single pics and music tracks are released in the prods section on Pouet, then the site will soon be flooded and out of control. That's very true, but in my opinion it is flooded with small releases anyway.

Anyway, I'm just glad I'm not a moderator and I don't have to make those decisions. :)

I don't see how a picture is more 'demo' than a tune either. For the exegraphics/music compos, surely they should be treated the same? A pic in an exe wrapper can't be better than a softsynth + realtime audio processing app making music surely? :) I guess it would have to be limited to 'only stuff entered in an exemusic compo' though or we'd have a whole ton of oldschool music...

Agreed! That would be awesome!

But we also need someone with a lot of time and a lot of web coding experience to volunteer for such a project. :)

wade: i dont want to raise false hopes here, but as soon as the pouet2 engine is done, there might be potential for reusing the basecode for that.

Good to hear! Sounds very promising indeed!! :)

Gargaj: I thought "pouet2" was an inside joke or something :) But wouldn't it be better to have it all in one place? Would flooding be a problem? really?

pouet v2 would be a really really great thing incl. gfx and music.

I think all scene categories could be represented. If you don't want to see a certain prod type, then you could have an option to filter it out..

We could have a "has to be released at a party" constraint on gfx and sfx prods.

totally off topic: the tune doesnt play with (avira) antivir turned on due to false positive detection, even when i select "ignore" approx. 3 times to finally execute the file. apart from that, pretty decent tune.

Pouet v2 will be put online the day Duke Nukem Forever comes out.

i agree w/ the_paranice i think both sound and gfx are 2 sides for the same coin.
if you said that sound needs to be w/ some gfx then i think you should check procedural graphics same meaning.
