Hmm iq, how do you get the detail right? I mean if the image takes a long time to render how do you tune dof, colour, light intensity, ao etc. Do you have some post processing framework in place?

auld, during the texturing, shading and lighting sessions I use a caching system. I mean, I only compute the intersections once, and for every pixel I store in disk the intersection point, the distance to it, the normal, the material id and other data. Therefore I can do work on the surfaces at interactive rates, or almost.
Also, during the design process I don't output the final image into a window, but just write it to disk. On the second monitor I run a programm that monitors the date of that file and reloads whenever it finds a change in it. That way I can see in the second monitor my images change as I modify values in the other window (and press F5), all that seamesly. No window closes and reopens, so I can really see the effect of my changes in a nice and smooth way.
Of course, the creation of the distance function itself is more cumbersome cause I can aonly visualize it by raymarching, what is slow. However, defining 3d shapes by means of distance functions is way easier (and faster to develop) than the surfaces. Actually, this image without textures is just crap (and could fit in 1.5 kilobyte). I just realized about it with thiw prod, and that's why I think I will start to judge procedural graphic based on the quality of it's textures more than the geomtry...

I guess this is mostly a matter of the lighting? I think this reduces a little of the credibility. But then of course, this is totally subjective. Can't wait to see your next works.

the size of the scene is deliberately ambiguous. It's actually not a forest (look, the trees don't have branches, and also you don't find horizontal branches or flying cells in forests). It's more like a microscope view of some organ. However there is mushrooms and and grass, what you obviously don't find in real tissues. So, it clearly doesn't represent any realistic scene..
