Funny. I believe this is the first demo I ever saw, on the PC anyway. Even though I think the UltraForce demo I saw next, was much more in the demo category than this. But it's fun to think back on.
I think this was from 1989, according to hornet (where I found it) in any case, color cycling selectable effects and PC speaker digital tunes on PC in that era is a rules... and the hardware flashing even works on my Pentium III vendor-specific-hardware laptop! And with Windows ME in fakeDOS (though reeeally slow)! And 23kb isn't that shabby either, though that was a lot in that time

Author here. This is the only demo I ever finished and published.
@hd: You're right, the digitized music was my main point. I hacked together a 1-bit sampling device connected to the parallel port. I remember doing a lot of digitizing experiments until I found a clip which sounded reasonable in 1-bit. The digitizer and playback code was done in assembler and it sped up the clock interrupt to match the sample rate. As a result, the computer's clock would fast forward while recording or running the demo. If I recall correctly, I calculated and compensated for that by writing the correct time back into the when the demo quit.

BTW, the song is "I Say a Little Prayer". Hard to tell from that noise which version, but Dionne Warwick would be a good first guess.

Experiencing as a kid that a PC speaker can do more than just beep (and perhaps also that text on the DOS prompt can change color) was mind-blowing. One of many things that drew me (and a bunch of people I know) more into computers, but one that I have not forgotten.

Text mode colour cycling, but what was really cool, was the digitised music that come from the PC's internal speaker.
It played a sample loop of a person singing (about 5sec looped).
Also, while the demo ran, all of the lights on yuor computer would flash in paterns (caps, scroll, num, HDD).
Impressed me at the time :)
