was stunning then, is stunning now. Shame even with PC's and 3d graphocs they still cant match it
>Shame even with PC's >and 3d graphocs they >still cant match it..
What do you mean? Can Amiga run a demo like Xlr8r from Mad Onion? =)
When Amiga fanatic people said me similar things like "Even Pentium with Geforce can't match Amiga500 demos!" I was thinking that the Amiga mad realtime raytracing with bump mapping and billinear interpolation additive blending!
But they meaned on design. These Amiga people are confusing my mind ;)
This is supposed to be the demo that was running lots'a minutes and showed some space story as some friend told me? I shall definitelly remember to download this one...

Let's get something out of the way first. With all the credits, this demo is almost an HOUR long. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy an "epic" as much as anyone, but I think they went too far on the time. There are pics and effects here and there to keep you interested, but most of the demo seems to be things like "planet scans" which take like a minute each, and there are several. It's easy to fall asleep before the demo's done.
It's a shame that noone has the patience to create (or watch!) a demo like this again. I think those that would are in the game/movie business now anyway. :)

Yeah ! remember 1991, a new style of demo, a story based demo, and lots of minutes long!
With a true story and lots of good music.
4 disks in 1991 where other cant fill just one !)
For all theses reasons, this demo is a must. Dont see it with your today eyes, remember 1991, when you dream (and make demos) in front of your computer showing megademos. This demo was a newstyle for this year.
A must see, a legendary demo!

my all time favorite, I must cast a vote on it ^^;
dunno, but isn't it
a) looong and boooooring
b) the same effects again and again for 45 minutes
c) the perfect example for a pointless storydemo?

so it basically...
it was a lot of work and something new at that time, definetly. but still, i want to view it with today's eyes. and it actually is very boring and way too long. just the kind of demo i don't want to see today, but it sort of has a revival nowadays.
Cult and Classic... Lot of demos later was inspired on this one.. (unreal etc..)
It may be boring,. but I will just vote 4 the idea..
yes, cant escape it - its boring. demos ain't no movies - too long, too story-based and too repitative to keep you excited till the end.
most boring thing i ever saw. how can something like this win against hardwired? i will never understand.
actually, i HATE this demo.
(actually, digital innovation is even more boring...)

This is strange.. i have been writing comments the whole day, and now my comments appears like "racer" wrote them. strange...
well again:
cant understand why i loved this demo so much. its a pretty slow story and mostly pictures (well nice gfx) but i must say.... HELL the music! greg (if i remeber right) must be a genius! anyone know what greg doing today? contact me!

Boring boring boring! It's amazing that this thing beat both Hardwired and Voyage...
I liked it.. But Hardwired was much better in my eyes.
I really liked those Asteroids!!! heh
enjoyed the first 15 minutes, but when does it end?
It's pretty amazing that such an old production still runs without any problems on any topical Amiga! Is any of those Chaos of Sanity hacks running on an 68060?? Nope, they are NOT! So be quiet man!
attack of the mutant racer
mempheria raced by racer
myeah, odyssey still doesnt get my thumb...
TRUE CLASSIC!
"Zzzz zzz... oh, it's still running?"
One of the most ambitious, longest and at the same time one of the most uninteresting demos of all time.
One of the most ambitious, longest and at the same time one of the most uninteresting demos of all time.
It would be better if there was a skip or fastforward function, but it's worth a vote for the gfx, music and the awesome dogfight.
Repetetive and a bit boring at times, but it's a masterpiece.
The first boring flyby-demo ever? I never really liked this one. Too long, pointless and more boring than anything. But since there are plenty of nice gfx and decent music, and obviously lots of work put into it by the (late?) coder as well, I can't give it thumbs down. Not even as it looks like nothing but precalc.. :)
Funny that Chaos would hate this, though.. Aren't most Farbrausch intros/demos/whatever basicially the same thing without a story? :)

naaaah
break: i really do agree with you. this is utterly boring. and the routines are actually nothing but precalc (five disks - one for gfx and music, four for precalc ;). it deserved a 3rd or 4th place att TP.
but. i think the gfx and zik alone motivates a thumb up. and as stated, this was the first (big) flyby-demo which actually indicates some innovation ;)

Definitly thumbs-up for the music - liked it that time - and still like it :-)
Some cool ideas in it - but i agree: it has it "lengths"....
Still an overall thumb-up for this !

Long, good Music but a little bit boring... i like it, cause Sci Fi Thematics Rocks ;)
This prod rulez! Voyage/Razor1911 and Hardwired/TSL+Crionics should have been 1 and 2 at tp'91 still this demo roxx forever! I skipped classes to see it with a schoolmate of mine! :)
nice work but sooooo boring
can't thumb down. too much involved. at this time, it was really impressive. but it's so boring. it never ends. From a planet to another and always the same fx.
the soundtrack is still very nice.
the soundtrack is still very nice.
Too frigging long and quite boring.
oldtimer
too long.
Hardwired forever!!!
Hardwired forever!!!
Of course it's little bit (too much?) boring, but for 1991, it was AWESOME !
and the 6 modules played during that demos are GREAT !
and the 6 modules played during that demos are GREAT !
Impressive 91 stuff :)
Incredible.
six floppies :)
Best amiga demo ever..
the best demo of its decade! and on some parts the music was just sooooo nice! it still rocks!! amiga 4ever
Although I think this demo sports some great graphics and music, I can not help by saying it is a bit boring because it is sooo long. Anyway, if one takes a look at the time it was released, it was a great production.
Boring. Technically it's good, but it's far too long.
I love, it love it, love it! Coded so clean that it still runs fine on my A4000 !!!
Have a try with the HD version from Aminet, get it from here: ftp://de.aminet.net/pub/aminet/demo/file/Odyssey.lha

Voyage/Razor1911 should have come 1st!
It sooo boring, But with good music and graphics, and the thumbs is for that and the obvious amount of hardwork put into it.
too long, not enough effects. i hate too do this but it doesn't really earn anything other than a thumbs down.
Superproduction!
I liked the tunes so much and I didn't care for the length. Very very nostalgia influenced thumbs up!
I guess I never managed to see this one to the end, but the music rocks so no thumb down
Agreed it is long and does get a little tedious, but it's still a golden oldie and gets a thumbs from moi.
Why didn't they use just a tiny scroller in the bottom of the screen instead of printing the story in big letters across the entire screen as soon as a new picture shows up? Why?!
(And why are these boring vector parts so incredibly long?)
(And why are these boring vector parts so incredibly long?)
A bit boring to be watched several times but the size made a huge impression on me back in 1992. First story demo I saw if I remember correctly.
An other masterpiece by Alcatraz.
Great job Alcatraz!
If only all amiga demos only attract this much attention. ;)

huge and nice demo
when I got the floppies back in the days the last one was corrupted
how to get mad... =)

Very boring demo! Totally overrated! But nice gfx.
Nice gfx and tunes.
Boring shite - what were people thinking. But maybe I should blame myself - I was too tired to vote.
Well.. I have to give my viewpoint of this excellent masterpiece.
I have to admit it can be a bit boring since it's more than 40 minutes long and after the space battle not much interesting stuff happens.
BUT - WHAT A SPACE BATTLE !! I have never felt such an energy rush through my spine watching any other demo, ever! The authors really put their finest self in this production, they clearly were excited, and that excitement shines and explodes to the viewer in such a wonderful way!
If you watch it from the beginning until the end of the space battle, then it's not yet that boring, and it has nice different musics (atmospheric and nice!), good graphics and amazing space battle, and you can then stop with your heart still racing from the energy blast from that unbeatable space battle!
When I watch demos, I don't care what kind of design or effects it has as long as the demo radiates that excitement from the authors and of course great graphics and an interesting storyline is always a plus in my eyes. I do like the ending though when the planet explodes and the asteroids flow through ..
So I agree that the 'scanning planet'-parts, vector flights on the planets etc. are too long and quite boring but what an achievement to make a 40-minute demo with a consistent storyline with the greatest space battle I have seen anywhere (including Star Wars and Babylon 5). And when I say 'greatest', I of course mean -energetically- greatest.
That energy is what the Amiga people probably meant when they have complemented this demo and when they say people can't seem to do this with Geforce cards and all the 3d-gimmics. The energy is just NOT THERE anymore in modern demos.
Well, I am sure most nobody understood what I mean but I just had to explain this part so people at least can understand if they choose to.
So all in all - most of the demo after the space battle is a bit boring, the space battle itself is energetic and exciting (and very nicely done, and what musics! wow!) as heck, and this demo has great graphics and nice atmosphere nevertheless. A MUST-SEE if you have never seen it - watch it AT LEAST until the space battle is over!
(I think I will always enjoy the space battle, simply can't get bored by it)

oh yes! When this came we just watched it trought, picked up our jaws from the floor and watched it again!
watched it on a AGA machine back at 94 i think...
overrated and boring demo
still nice art

Hornet: 13.03.1973 - 13.04.2000
it's way too boring. i prefer other amiga classics to this. still, it's got class: loads of cool pics, great soundtrack, some nice effects.
The Star Wars of demoes! And who the fuck is Zork?
this demo was a shock for a lot of sceners ---> don't forget it run on an ... A500 in 1991/92 !!!
at thoses times ---> no 3ds import, no authoring tools etc etc.
great memories.

Typical story demo one of the longest prod on amiga ever. Yeah it's borin' but way back it roxx :)
thumbs up for the pioneering attempts for a storyline. however, the story itself and its presentation is quite boring.
@ that time it was simply - an adventure :D
Ok it may be a bit boring and surely Hardwired might have deserved to win. But the amount of work injected into that demo is truly outstanding. Also it was somehow the pinnacle of Alcatraz carreer on the Amiga. So i think it deserves a thumb up after all.
great demo
Thanx for that production, it was beed added to: modcast.de, the Amiga-Modfile Podcast and Radio-Stream resource.
What Stingray said!! Nice gfx, boring and tooo long!
Woah! Forgot to thumb this up! Yes... I know it's loooooong but this demo has something that makes me love it! :D
This demo only won because all the people who would have voted against it fell asleep during the competition.
Ahaha, probably true somehow.
A lot of work involved in this one but I still don't understand why Hardwired did not win. This one was soooo boring

From the graphic and music view this truly is a gem, but Hardwired had the bloody muscle up front in terms of effects and innovation.
After all one can thumb it up for the dedication the guys brought into that 5 disk adventure.

A legend!
Some horrible repetitive parts but overall a masterpiece.
So many memories back then....
this was one of 10 most amazing Amiga demos ever made.....just listen the music !!!

I finally found a copy of this (http://www5.oxedion.com/index.php/download/d15d120173d28738ff0a3ee1d2b54d6a) and I think I can see how this probably won TP 91.
While it doesn't have as good a soundtrack as Hardwired or quite as clever effects, it does have a massive (if badly spelled and cliche) story behind it, and an immense quantity of 3D scenes, all nicely wrapped up together.
I say quantity because it looks lousy today, but then again it constantly and consistently puts those first few scenes of 'Desert Dream' to shame. A LOT of work went into the animation here, and their code manages to squeeze out a decent space battle. If anything, this demo was a bit too ambitious.
I'm guessing at least part of the reason this demo is so slow (and so long) is because of the time it spends reading from the disk...
It seems like a compliation of cutscenes from what might have been an awesome adventure game back in the day.
Is Hardwired a better demo? Probably. But this is not bad.

great soundtrack for this very long show, with cool graphics "inspired" by Marco Patrito (famous Italian artist father of Sinkha) from his Comic book "Dar Shak"
All the effort and work put into this is worth a thumb up even if it tends to be boring on some stages... unbelievable how you blockheads can thumb it down? Give a piggy instead.
piggy because of boredom...
Quote:

Huh? Why should people who dislike this demo and think it sucks give a piggie? A lot of graphics != good demo...
Well, this Demo is no Fast Food, StingRay :)
Nonetheless, the Tunes by Greg ´carry´ it along, in my opinion; even over some long drawn-out scenes...

So much effort put into this demo that it`s really amazing. It`s way to long but back then it didnt matter :)
it´s good, but not as good as the 2nd place
Wow missed thumbing this prod, what a ride!
one of the greatest
thumb up for graphics and greg's soundtrack. I'll ignore the boredom.
nice
Cheesy but an important piece of demoscene history for me. I remember when back then PD retailers would promote in in german game mags as "full motion picture" or something. Didn't get to watch this legend then before 2004 when I finally discovered the scene. Thumb up for the days when lazy Amiga saxophones were not perceived embarrassing.
massive....ahhhhhhh... memories.......
nice but ...
what RA said..............
Saw it on the party-bigscreen. Loved it, and still do! Only demo i can remember that dared to focus on a story. Music and Visuals are creating a great atmosphere. Code is supportive.

Thumb for the huge work, but oh boy it gets boring. A ten minute remix would rule :)
Prod rockz, one of my big favs.
By the way, i uploaded an old div-x streamed version of this release. get it, its only for a s h o r t time ( 1. dec. 2008 ) online !!! so non amiga users may imagine how nice this was released end of 1990.
Div-X Stream : Odyssey old Div-X Stream LQ
ps, if no other - better sources are available, it would be fine if a gloperator can add this stream to scene.org and link this to its release here.

Its all well done, but actually i found it quite boring and never watched all of it.
damn,still no thumb by me?
nothing less than what made me get an amiga finally after all that time with the c64 and let me start immediately to code on it :) i knew other amiga-demos already, but that one really did the job perfectly!
<3

i like this demo!
I'm going to be evil and thumb down this demo - mostly because I remember how incredibly boring and long it was when I saw it. And because it it beat Hardwired, the best Amiga demo up to that poiint...
This isn't a demo..Its a graphical novel. Its half a hour long for fuck sake!
But all tough its still rather cool especially for its time.
But all tough its still rather cool especially for its time.
pretty long for todays hyperactive audience but a real entertainer back in 1991
what TS said :)
most overrated bullshit demo ever
and i say this because i am very pissed that it was placed before hardwired by tsl, which should have been the winner
and i say this because i am very pissed that it was placed before hardwired by tsl, which should have been the winner
Music rules
rocks!
Great gfx and music, maybe a bit boring but didnt stop me watching it way too many times when it was first released..
oh and I think people thumbing it down just because of the place it took is pretty silly, I agree Hardwired is the fucking shit, infact I am a TSL fanboy, but still.. judge by its own merits.
Love this
another person who cannot believe that odyssey has beaten hardwired. especially that part of the graphics is shameful rip from 'blood money' (asteroids, planets). but, still, i admit that this prod amazed me those 17 years ago ;)
40 Minutes of nice routines, graphics and music. (and a rather lame story :)
I can understand people who prefered Hardwired than Odyssey, but Voyage ??
is the "BBS part" of Voyage not more boring and uninteresting than the boring parts of Odyssey ?? (and i just say i really like Voyage which have it own quality... !! ) And the rest of the content isn't better than the Odyssey's one for me...
I also notice than all group who wanna copy this demo or try to do better didn't success, whatever the period or the machine...
I just notice by watching mod infos that Greg took his samples from a Korg-M1 workstation ^^

Have a thumb. I hated this. Too many repeated scenes and waay too long. The thought of rewatching it sent chills down my spine.
Great art and code, all that to the service of a boring story with repetitive events. The same things compressed on half the duration would have been a lot more enjoyable...
Ok at that time I don't have Internet (like probably anyone else ;-) ) But I don't even know any swapper or any people interesting in the scene, so for getting demo I need to buy them from a PD company (Yeah I know it's lame ;-) ). So because I was very short in money I really need to take care of demo I command and because Odyssey is a 5 disk demos, I can't have any other Party 91 demos, so I've bought only Odyssey / Alcatraz...
After receiving it, watching it, got only one conclusion: this demo is not really good and Thomas Landspurg (sorry for the bad spelling) already do something similar), so conclusion of my little brain: the whole party was not so fantastic...
Result: I've discovered Hardwired in 96 during my first demo party.
And yes Odyssey / Alcatraz, it's your fault and yes you * strongly * deserve your thumb down !!! Period !

!o/ ATZ \o! nice prod!!
They must have had seriously long attention spans in '91. Great demo but boring because of the story telling aspect. And it beat Hardwired at TP'91...wtf!? That's just not right!
And what i mean by that is that Hardwire, at the time was revolutionary in its design...just watch it. There was and had never been anything like HW up until that point and it was a masterpiece. No disrespect but Odyssey was just more of the same on an Epic scale.
Great artwork!, winning to Hardwired in a compo is not easy.
WTF!
Horribly cheesy but looks and sounds good and the amount of work put into this is truly staggering.
the story is cheaper than a kids cartoon from the 80s.
the effects arent groundbreaking or anything at all.
its way too long to just watch it for some demo fun.
BUT the concept of the demo was fresh and still is today.
there was lots of thoght and hard work put into it, the muscial score and the sound fx are brilliant, so is the presentation.
the discussion if its a rightful winner is a dull one, this thing got its rightful place in amiga-demo histoy, end of story.

real polys - no shaders :)
simply love it, especially the music <3
Loved it back in the days. Music is very good.
Wonderfull, although too long!
Classic demo! :)
I wonder why this demo is so low on the all-time!?
OMG it's so long... Music is OK except for part 1 that sounds a bit distorted.
What raver said.
Up for me. Maybe the first instance of a demo that was meticulously planned, thought out, conceived - a full album instead of a single and some filler.
Music was good, and the amount of effort is indeed amazing - both of which barely saves it from a thumb down. But the end product is still boring, has very bad pacing, and lots of cringeworthy moments. I didn't like it back then, I find it even worse today.
Loved some stuff back then, but its the music, especially part5 slow tune, that got me.
At the time I failed to see what all the fuss was about. Piggy just for the effort involved.
Oh, finally it has ended! I just couldn't pay full attention to such a lOOOOOOng demo... Only listened to music and was browsing pouet all the way. In 1991 the perception of this demo must be totally different, I suppose.
The demo has size of almost 4 Mb and contains just TONS of work and effort, but not in hardware-banging of course...

Yep, it might be a little boring and longer than necessary, but the amazing soundtrack alone deserves a huge thumbs up.
As I see there is 2 type of peps out there: either love it or hate it.
One thing for sure, no other demo has this much posts.....
I love it, and besides this demo the only demos I remember Phenomena-Enigma and Red Sector mega demo and Budbrain mega demo. Yeah I know hardwired, but not a single scene jumps to my mind meanwhile these other are different, I remember every part, music etc.
IMO this is a huge and totally different demo then the others. It has a story, and effects used to tell the story. Other demos have 10-15 scene but only effects, no story max a scroller. Here Alcatraz had to make the story, work sound effects work with graphics, not many demos had timed effects back than. So I think this is a unique demo, one of my favorite, but I do understand some peps fell asleep etc.:)))

Gaaaaaaahhhh.....
Long and boring, but a lot of effort was put into it, so piggy.
Love it!
Incredible feat. I can't understand how they managed to make this. I suspect they had to actually watch through the whole thing several times!? I haven't been able to watch it even once.
A lot of effort went into this, which is a shame, because it could have been good just with better direction. The story is cheesy and very poorly written, and the scenes go on for way, waaaay too long.
Disregarding relative comparison with Hardwired I can understand the effort, and the appreciation for it as well. I've actually watched it twice before. But only once for the full length, because I felt I had to force myself.
Would I have copied/spread/kept this in late-late 1991? Probably not.
Watched it again now, I liked the ships leaving, grid wire mesh, planets with moon bobs. But looks and sounds too much like PD/game and not demo, and in every part I want to click something to GET ON WITH IT. :P

The amount of work put into this one is simply impressive. Music and gfx are superb. Don't care much for the story, though.
I'd better watch this again ...
It always bored me to death. But it was also super well done. Great use of vector graphics and static backgrounds.
OMFG is this what dying of boredom feels like? In fact this is so boring I still haven't finished watching it. I'm glancing at it on the other monitor while typing this comment. From time to time a prompt to change the disk appears and shakes me out of my trance, at which point I'm thinking: do I have to? I mean it doesn't suck. It has impressive stuff in it, but GOD it needs a fast-forward control. Also the text is concentrated cringe. FUCK this is boring....
Love the story, classic Amiga graphics, great music. Plenty of time to let the imagination run wild, watch and get lost in an immersive dream of your own design subtly steered by the screen narrative. Remove the millennial disruptions, relax and enjoy.
just to make this clear again
this is the most BORING and OVERRATED piece of shit ever produced on the Amiga.
while it might have been a lot of work for the graphics people and the music is quite good, the constant repeating code scenes, with much too slow story (too long text display) and the same kind of scenes on every fucking disk, makes this just a bit NO for me.
after the first time i watched this, i was already disgusted. also, how could this SHIT win against Hardwired by Silents???
years later i gave it a second try. just no! NO! I NEVER WANT TO WATCH THIS _SHIT_ AGAIN!

Too long for a demo, but what the hell: I still remember when I saw this for the first time :) During the space chase part I was already trying to find my jaw from the floor. Awesome demo when it was released, a true classic today.
One of my favourites, for the technical aspect at the time and today for the aesthetic aspect. Beautiful.
So I managed to watched this demo completely. And here are some feelings about this "megatrackmo" (that's what I call this production) from me:
* it's long (even end scroller says about that)
* it's fantastic
* the music is just amazing (especially parts 1, 3, 6 and the "deep space" part)
* great graphics
That's about it I think. Just an amazing demo from the beginning of the 90's.

managed to watch*
I appreciate the efforts put in this demo in all domains but this is way too long and repetitive.
Ehh... What hasn't been said. Boring boring boring upon more boring, but there are a few points of light here and there. Should not have been in the top 5 at this party.
Epic for its time.
Maybe a bit boring by today standards and expectations.

Premium quality game style graphics, 7 good different music tracks, nice 3D (year 1991 come on!), hero story. it's long, yes very long, which is by design and single most important element of this demo is it's length. So it managed to do this remarkably.
But I wonder, what happened to the PGCS and Nathalie? Are they still together?

I remember this got shit for being prerendered. Perhaps a bit long but great idea!
Epic for its time. Nice slideshow with story and some demo effects. Genocide on PC later taught that great story demo can be delivered in under 5 minutes. I still give it a thumb for historic reasons. When i watched it first time i had no idea about scene, just had amiga. I was deeply disappointed not seeing a game.. just a properly impressive intro for a game. I thought then a demo is just a glimpse for a future game… silly 12 y/o me in 1991
Superbe demo with great atmosphere. Everything is ace, code, graphiques, music and sfx.
But, story is same as Star Wars', boring, simplistic and naive.

BTW this demo was once presented in Polish public TV in a show called "Telekomputer", which was a part of "educational television" block (Telewizja Edukacyjna) years ago in the 90's.
Ok, actually I finally got to watch this.
I should say that despite the effort that was put into making this concept story demo with an amazing soundtrack, good drawings and even some good coding (I especially liked the battle scene) - the rhythm of this demo slowed down at the point of becoming a bit boring in the last part.
So, overall, it's a piggie.

Classic, what else?
Probably noteworthy:
Somebody who *really* liked Odyssey remade the entire thing in blender and published the video on YouTube.
The result is excellent too!
