well, just der piipo, and he's been back already :)

plenty of names to vote for here, but yeah, it does stand up to their levels of quality. killer soundtrack.

58mb for a demo is fine! it's 2007 people!

Nice work, more of the same doesn't have to be bad :) Though I didn't really like the crappy videogame part.

Cube effect was beautiful though!

nope, sorry, everything i said about halfsome applies here as well, twice as much.

this is not a demo, this is a "best of" from 5 different demos (that didn't get released), none of which has anything to do with any of the others. adding the same cookie cutter design elements ("let's put some arrows and lines here!) is not direction. using the by now trademark (for flt) graffiti-style logos regularly is not coherence. and the soundtrack even manages to underline (or reflect?) how this demo stubbornly refuses to become a whole.

don't get me wrong: pick any of the individual elements - 2d, meshes, lighting, the individual segments of the tune, the effects - and it's nothing short of truly excellent work. but the complete lack of any direction (this demo literally doesn't know where it's going!) drags it down tremendously; far worse than just leaving a bad taste in my mouth, it completely ruins the experience for me. hence the piggy.

okkie no it is not fine: it's not fine when you can have a video with the same quality and duration with less than 60MB! The demoscene is suposed to be about realtime, not about pre-rendered stuff, for that you would submit all your demos to animation/film festivals. I know it's just the way how [b]I[/i] see it.

one thing i've noticed playing the home game, this is an absolute resource hog. takes a good minute to load, and another minute to quit before the whole desktop comes back, and that's on a core 2 duo. compare with lifeforce, which takes a few seconds to load and quit.

The smoke is quite cool.

I have no idea what kind of configuration this requires but the loading time was insane and then the demo ran a 10 fps on my machine (6600 GT with Athlon 2GHz).

Will wait for a proper version or something to give it a thumb up. I tend to agree with Ryg by the way.
added on the 2007-08-05 05:19:44 by keops keops
moral winner. I still agree that there's too much loose bits and the flocking galvatron/master chief retards in the middle just feel completely out of place (and no smash, lack of collision in flocking is not a good thing). However, a visual feast.

A CNCD & Orange demo would have been interesting, but now... just another Fairlight demo.
meh ... resolution does not improve the visuals, the whole seems out of concept and demands performance giving no justification for that. Well and the filesize ...

Ryg stated already what I had in my mind.

I also realized perhaps my gripe with Fairlight demos lately comes from mixing realistic looking scenes together in a sense that doesn't make sense. In more abstract style demos you don't mind if there's no connection between the parts, but more realistic approach would require some kind of storyline.

It looks really awesome in places. The soundtrack is brilliant as well. Also, works better for me than Halfsome, so here's your thumb. :)

I kind of expected more, neverthe less this dirty, subreal demo somehow stimulated my processing mind drifting away to some old polluted area in part unknown, where the ground is black and white, but the clouds are green, the sky is indigo, the robots are azure. Well, it's not a bad production, the elevator just didn't make all the way up. Data Or Die!
rulez added on the 2007-08-05 13:19:22 by Xiny6581 Xiny6581
MASSIVE content and effort! I like this style with all it's graffitis, arrows and growing lines, even if we have seen this in all previous FLT demos already. The fishy camera is also really cool. Unfortunately the soldiers don't fit into the rest of the demo and music is just boring. Let Gargaj or Little Bitchard make a tune for one of your next demos and we will be blown away :-)

even tho 80% of the demo looks like "recycling galore" (ok, "fairlight: megamix"), and, as usual, it's slow like hell, can't resist to such a rocking content, so, here's the thumb. mk12 in realtime ftw!

fresh shit, but i second ryg on this one... the scenes themself were ace, and i really love the feeling of the first parts.

there is connetion between the parts... but they are not so good.. and the camerawork just feels boring.

This must have been a shitload of work. Still the result is as incoherent as it can get, the soundtrack is annoying (don't get me wrong, I can enjoy music like this when it's done live by three stoned people with some synth equipment at some small club, but there's a reason those sessions almost never get recorded), and the whole thing is SO not my cup of tea.

Some sporadic visual beauty in between saves it from a thumb down tho... in the hope that next time you all think about what you're doing instead of being so desparately wannabe post-modern.
added on the 2007-08-05 17:11:34 by kb_ kb_
very disappointing, considering the proud announcements how unbeatable fairlight felt.

maybe the graphics are worth the large size and long depacking phase, but why put that ugly RGB distortion on top of everything? image post processing is the key to making things look great, but in this case it made things look crappy.

the fisheye would have been innovative a year ago, but here it further reduces image quality to a blurry mess.

if you have a couple robots running around, you could at least make sure they don't run through each other.

and then there is the "brilliant" moment where the audience gets completly lost...
added on the 2007-08-05 17:34:17 by chaos chaos
haiiil the smokebox!!

The graphics are generally awesome. Especially the grafitti on the train stands out as particularly excellent.

There are these small touches where the 3d is accompagnied by some matching web 1.0 designer graphics which look great (robot + stars + diagonal orange lines ruled).

Also I liked the rgb distort effect in the black and white scenes, but not in the ones which had colour from before.

Cool to see some characters too. Maybe flocking behaviour can become the new demo rage effect after growing lines.

Have to watch it a few more times. There is something missing, but I can't put my finger on it. Maybe it is the medley style of the music. That always annoys me. It happens in movies all the time though. I have the same problem with matrix 3 for example. :)

This demo had one good effect and a fisheye we've seen before. Fisheye was nice at the start with the trains - that looked phat, but it's overused. Smoke box - cool, but fails to hold the rest of the demo up.

I'm not buying it. I think Fairlight are close to exhausting their repertoire which is a great shame and painful to me. Piggy since I still feel some love.

After rewatching some of the entries, i would say this is my favourite from the democompo. Yes it's big and slow at some points, but the graphics are goddamn amazing, the smokebox is really cool and so is the music.

It's not perfect though, maybe that's why i like it ;)

it's amazing to see how when FLT is up all of the sudden some individuals turn into sensitive, demanding critics who otherwise couldn't care less about the notorious repetitiveness and lack of concept in the demoscene. i don't get it. seems it's becoming fashionable now to nag on FLT.

well, what do i care. to mee, FLT again managed to stay on top of everyone else simply through their utter elegance, aesthetics, visual ideas and keen sense for style. yes, they keep going in their vein. but heck, so do most of you. and yet, one shot of this is still way sexier than most of the rest. well, i have my moral winner : P

Like many previous FLT demos, this has the same problem. Lot's of things I really don't like in demos, including the "colours", lack of consistency, too much boring 3d with a bunch of lines going around them.. List goes on..

This one sent some shivers through my hardware, but that aside I think it is very good. The grafitti on the trains is an exercise in style and I also like the brave use of the fisheye. I can see how this is not to everybody's taste, and it can feel a bit cold at times, but the downthumbers here really need to get out more.

Also, the incoherency criticism that has been applied to this and other recent demos baffles me a bit. Is a demo incoherent if it contains more than just the reuse of one or two routines, if it doesn't have a storyline or if its not built on the same damn recognizable demoengine for the fiftieth odd time? Variety is too often mistaken for incoherency, and that also applies here.

i also have to agree with archmage.
the visuals were just awesome and while the music didn't really stand out as anything special it did complement the visuals in my opinion (like in a motion graphics demo reel for example). The helicopters at the end were a really nice touch and I think the athmosphere was pretty consistent as it did kinda feel like "something criminal" was going on throughout the demo.

hallo,
negative comments towards us on pouet is water off a duck's back these days, but i guess we should answer some comments and give some info (seeing as the nfo file never happened).

- we had big plans to make something cool. unfortunately it ended up making something in a week, mostly in 3 days during the party, and rushing until the last minute, finishing 8pm saturday just before the video recording. (same procedure as last year..). even forgot to add a real screenshot. yea, we're pretty disappointed in ourselves for not planning this out properly, but we've tried before to allow 3 months to make a demo and it always ends up the same way - a week of work at the end. :) i sure admire navis and others for being able to work 5 months on a demo, plan it through and stick to it, but we seem not to be able to do it - most of the guys are freelance or have a company, so their free time completely varies randomly by incoming workload. it was a choice between doing it like this or releasing nothing at all.
maybe "next time". (who am i kidding. we'll be doing it at the last minute again.)

- still, it was a pure pleasure and great fun working side by side with this bunch of guys. i really enjoyed making this, regardless how it turned out.

- the right demo won, and by the right margin. navis is a superstar.

- it worries me a bit to read comments like ryg's - "looks like 5 different demos stuck together". demos dont have to have just one idea, or a story or continuous smooth transitions, guys. that's a certain style that some groups wish to do. the concept of this demo was like a tv switching channels (although some of that got lost due to the rushing) - those instant and extreme cuts, and all the rgb shifting, were part of the plan. just because it's different (to the current popular demo style of asd and others which is a perfectly smooth transitional show, or to what some people like) doesnt mean it's wrong.
i'm certain it isnt to everyone's tastes, though. but thats fine by me. you can be certain that we arent going to change, by the way. this is our style and we're keeping it.

- the full credits:
destop / cncd - 3d and direction (most of the 3d that wasnt the city)
frank / orange - 3d (particularly the city scene)
der piipo / orange - character animation
mazor / flt - 2d
kustaa / flt - more 3d (the tv)
smash / flt (thats me!) - code + tools
pantaloon / flt - additional core/tools code
sulphur / orange - music

- performance wise - i know the loading is way, way too long (simply didnt have time to fix it) and some scenes are a bit too slow (the clouds and the 2nd fluids scene particularly), we might do something about that. but actually this generally runs pretty fine (30 fps) on my 7600 laptop. it is something of a cpu hog (e.g. the fluids are all cpu calculated - and if you have a slow cpu like an old 2ghz athlon that will likely be the limiting factor throughout, probably starving the gpu - the driver will be working too hard with this kind of poly count - > ~2-3million per frame in some places thanks to the fisheye and shadows and a high poly count to begin with - gpu can cope but the driver might not), and it is a massive pixelshader user with long shaders all over the place (scales direct with screen size, so if you want more speed, run it in lower res - dont expect fast 720p on a less than cutting edge gpu). we took the decision that we'd be up against 360 demos, we had a 8800 in the compomachine and we were better to use the hardware than cut stuff down to run on crappy old gfxcards. the renderer was profiled and optimised, but to a quite high target platform - we didnt want to compromise rendering quality.
also we noticed that of the two compo machines, the nvidia one ran it really smooth, and the ati one ran it fast but kept pausing to upload resources. we do a precache step after loading, so im afraid it's likely the ati drivers arent playing ball (probably "optimising out" our precaching). unfortunately none of us had an ati card so we never discovered it before.
- even the gf 6600 is a pretty old card these days. i simply dont have any sympathy or interest if you complain about how it runs on a machine that isnt up to date. :) thankfully we're making demos for fun and it only really has to work on the compomachine - we're not making pc games where it has to work on even 3 year old intel integrated cards or something. and i'll bring up my usual argument - 10 years ago if you tried to run a new demo on a 2-3 year old pc it would croak. this demo will still "work" on a 2-3 year old pc today. be grateful for that. ;) but come on - you wouldnt expect the latest big pc fps to run well on your low-end laptop gpu, dont expect it from demos either.

- we were several mb under the sizelimit. that's the only thing i care about on the size discussion - if you think 60mb is too big for a demo, take it up with the compo organisers, not us.

- please do allow me one piece of dick waving: the smoke fluid is running on a 128x64x64 grid realtime on single core, with raytraced lighting. (if youve seen similar on a gpu, bear in mind to do it on a gpu really needs the features of a dx10-class card, and those are capable of 10-20x the flops of the cpu spec we targeted).
that actually required proper cpu code optimising and everything, which is something i havent needed to do in some time. it's originally based on stam's paper (the 2d one), but i had to do a lot of modifications and adjustments to get the grid size up and to maintain detail. naturally there's a lot of room for improvement and it wasnt used as interestingly as we wanted to use it. "maybe next time".

- "growing stuff" is not an effect, it's a tool, just like "particles" or "meshes" :) . so i totally disagree with the "growing graffiti = reuse / seen before" comments.

- the opinion of the 10% who like this will far outweigh the rest who dont, so thanks for that. was really nice to go onto the rocks after the compo and near the nice opinions of certain people up there (whos opinions we actually respect).

- see you next year. :) "same procedure as last year" probably, but i know we'll _try_ and spend the time to finally do our best. you still havent seen even 25% of what this team of artists (+ a token coder running around trying to stop them breaking the tools, and squeeze in an effect now and again) is capable of, i can promise you that.

Too bad about the overlapping characters though, and the city scene was quite flybyish and uneventful towards the end. Great trip nevertheless.

Oh, and what Archmage said.

coherence it's not about everything looking the same. it's the difference between 10 minutes of random video snippets from an archive and a short film, the difference between a band playing and five solo performers standing on the same stage all trying to one-up each other. and the latter is exactly what this demo feels like for me.

Watched it on my PC at work (Core2 + 7800 GT), it's faster but still slow here and there for some reason I did not get.

One can argue about the use of growing lines, arrows and graffitis one more time, but the demo is still worth a thumb up.

I eventually like this one. My only complaint is about the music that lacks of consistency. The intro loop is killer (the part with the train and graffitis) then it fades to something far less interesting made of bad deep house or something IMHO. The sound ain't that great.

BTW, it runs smoothly enough here (AMD 2400+, 1Gb, Nv 7600GS) to spare me epilepsy :)

Inconsistent my a**.. It doesn't tell a story or anything but imo demos shouldn't be about stories, demos should be about showing off! And almost all of the scenes have to do with cities & buildings. If the scenes would be any more similar, then this would be boring.. But now it's goood. Also the way the music changes with the b&w city........

To me this one has a large re-watch factor, I want to see the first smokebox again, I want to see the ill black & white city again and I definitely want to watch again the robots and wonder what on earth future technology you guys used to allow metal to flow through metal that easilly :D

When I first watched it there was a big lump in my throat, as the first two minutes are extremely impressive. The modelling is AAA, the camera paths top notch, all great. Even the RGB split.
After the first two minutes the ride comes to a halt. There is a very interesting liquids effect that is disconnected and then the demo ends. What a shame..

Maybe next time spend 2-3 months working on a single demo ? It will become a legend.

Smash, you definitely shouldn't change your style. It's not about that at all. What comes to recycling stuff, everyone does that anyways (what someone commented about graffiti / growing effects). In fact, the visual side of the demo was varying from good stuff (tm) to mind-blowing.

But you may take it to account if various people say it felt disconnected and incoherent in places, there's a reason for that kind of comments. Actually it never even crossed my mind it was ment to be a "tv-like channel switching" direction. Funny thing that Hoplite just commented about the same thing (although with opposite opinion), as he was definitely the master in this kind of direction with various Orange demos in the past. Perhaps you should get him in for the next release. :)

To me it was the direction that dropped this demo from a winning position to 3rd place. Maybe that's just a matter of taste, but:

Quote:
you still havent seen even 25% of what this team of artists (+ a token coder running around trying to stop them breaking the tools, and squeeze in an effect now and again) is capable of, i can promise you that.

I'll keep my fingers crossed then... Perhaps that one will be something we all have been waiting for. Keep reachin' up!

a fine piece of art. i like the basic idea behind it (seems like some people don't get it, althought the title makes it quite clear). the city scene and the smoke box are fantastic and the music sounds also very fresh. the only weak point is the last screen - it looks a bit odd and unfitting, but hey....

i cannot understand how people can thumb this down. we should be glad that gropus like fairlight still create such great demos and don't loose their interest in the demoscene.
and like monroe said - one shot of this is still way sexier than most of the rest.

First of all, technically this demo rulez

Here we have a mixture of connected scenes with a mixture of unconnected ones, and this is what makes people think that the entire demo is a nonsense (imho).

If the goal is to make people think that they are changing TV channels, I think that the demo must contribute to that feeling, maybe with a TV screen overlay, or more evident TV distortions between the scenes

I can't still get the connection between the first part of the demo and the rest

The music is not my taste, the beginning seems more polished, but as the demo advances it seems more and more simpler, which probably contributes to remove intensity to the prod.

But in any way can I thumb down the results of so much effort :)

First Fairlight demo that doesn't run on my system (probably doesn't like my ati card?). Watching a video is not really the same as the real thing but here goes anyway... As with nearly all of Fairlight's releases, it's great stuff.

However, there is one thing that i didn't like about this demo: the rgb filter. It just doesn't work for me, no matter how i look at it. I would loved to have seen the demo without it.

In any case, i'm absolutely convinced that if this team would work on a demo for 2 or 3 months, they would come up with a real killer, no doubt about that.

However, i have the impression that the more modern, grafitti sort of style (can i call it a bit hip hop ish?) doesn't go down too well with quite a few people? Live action from Up-rough on Amiga received quite a few reactions (more than more mainstream demos) saying: hmm... nicely done but not my style. Just a thought...

For some certain reasons I very much dig the train scene of course ;)
All over design was enjoyable even because of the RGB distortion and the fisheye.
Tune went a little off beat for my taste. Could've been more tight to allow sharper effect sync.
And finally the smoke/jelly box definitely hit my button! Gettin' Up!

This demo really grows on me after watching it for several times now. Can't get the music out of my head. As opposed to some people here I really like the RGB distortion (try wearing anaglyph glasses while watching this - eeerie!) - in my opinion the colours in the robot part could even be more krass and distorted. What about adding some kind of small channel switching/hacking effect between the individual scenes to reinforce the main theme (if some kind of "final version" is planned, that is)?
added on the 2007-08-08 10:21:33 by Stebo Stebo

I thought this ruled big time. No 'unfinished scenes' or filler for a change! Ok, so it could still have been a lot more finished than it is, but it's close enough. It's what track one promised to be but failed to deliver.

It's consistent enough for me too, not on the same level as the asd demo of course, but it obviously wasn't meant to be. And throwing a wicked effect or two into the middle of a demo is pretty much a tradition in the scene. It makes the demo less boring, unless you've actually got the shit load of content needed to fill 5 minutes or so with a single theme.

The content - the trains were great, the city too. And the smoke, obviously. The 'game' bit had an obvious lack of collision detection but otherwise ruled too. I loved that music too.

During the compo I seriously though this would win hands down, at least until the ASD demo started (then I changed my mind pretty fast!) I can't understand why it came 3rd.
rulez added on the 2007-08-08 14:34:24 by psonice psonice
I would also call the fisheye "a real effect", kind of cool how it's implemented.. Maybe it's the standard way for the regular 3d heads but I was impressed! The smoke around the train kind of gives it away :)

Watching this on the stream, I didn't really like it, it felt too much already-seen-before and bland.
But now that I saw it on my machine (and it runs really fine in 1280x1024/4xaa), I can see all the nice details that went into it and left me wanting more after the end. (it really kinda felt short)
I'm not a fan of the music and the RGB-shifting was quite annoying for the eye (it works as a distortion effect, but not if you do it constantly), but I cannot help thumbing it up.

For the incoherence complain, dunno, I don't see it less or more coherent than many other demos. And the rgb shift effect is ok too, what's wrong with it, I think it fits. The effects and technical level are outstanding. The design, well, i'm kind of bored with this numedia line/noise/tag-style but it still works well, it has its moments when it really works.

Generally, the problem with these kind of demos is that they are the part of demoscene that steers more and more away from the demoscene concept and towards general video art. i'm not saying all demos should stick to the idea of just showing off effects one by one and reusing the same ideas over and over again (it would kill the scene), evolution is inevitable, but i would bow superbly to a demo looking even slightly like this and having been optimized for a computer one would never believe it could run on. imo the best results are made when one is pushed to his limits with shitty slow and restricted tools and even THEN forced to come up with an elegant design. i just can't see this demo as such. still, tu for the overall impression.

Maybe you guys should actually spend some time with your productions for a change, eh? Music is so-so, almost like several different tracks mixed badly together. this is simply the fucking nicest city-scape i ever saw in a demo. (plus helicopters)
and some sweet robot-animations too.

The only 'problem' I had was the speed in which the robots moved. They were far too fast in my opinion.

some small nice bits but overall it doesn't get anywhere. neither has a climax nor a proper ending. it may be your style, but it's a style that makes you yawn. if there was a concept in mind, it was lost after the first minute.

well, the smoke box effect was presented in a way so similar to nvidia's., i'll refrain myself from commenting on it.

what is left in your hands when you forget everything else that doesn't excite you because they were done before, seen a million times is the city landscape which pretty much dominated the whole demo. and i wouldn't buy if for 60mb it a trade was possible.
Robots!

i love the city, the fluid sim is cool but has nothing to do with the other parts
In contrast too many others I found it quite consistent. Loves the fish-eye.
Ofcourse too unpolished - robots walking through each other. Still rulez. And done in that hurry, wow. Impressed.
(Still think it is too big, but agrees that it is a problem with the compo rulez, not the demo.)
rulez added on the 2007-08-27 16:47:54 by lemmus lemmus
nice, but few bugs are present. unfortunately.
when the camera changes its position in the city, one wrong frame is drawn sometimes.
liquid and smoke sim is extremely slow somehow (the sound ends, the sim continues...). this is especially funny on quad-core CPU.
and the sim does not fit into overall concept of the demo, i think.

Unbelievably cool effects, scenes and whatnot. Too bad it gets boring due to a total lack of flow/direction! Still, it rules. Pure class. Respect!

Robots!

This demo is massive and deserved a higher ranking at ASM. This so hi quality standard, all downthumbers definetly have to get a clue: Which demo did feature ace character animation lately, huh?
The modeling effort is huge.
I think the RGB filtering sucks, tho.

The criticism by ryg and others applies. Yet, it has tons of good work done in it.

Now is a perfect chance not to wait for a new demo, but MAKE A REDIRECTED FINAL, with all those parts you have, with all those ideas you, Smash, just spoke of, you can still realize them! Remember, some of those guys criticising you have actually redirected their demos in retrospect. And fixing stuff actually makes the prod live and be remembered long, otherwise it might get forgotten soon.

so, FINALIZE PLZ! thanks in advance. ;)

Now that I finally got a machine that can run this, I can say that it's ok. Some really nice scenes in it, but maybe it's the music and slow pace which ruins it for me.

Stalls, is incoherent, 60MB is just pushing it. Loads of wrong stuff here. But One week? You are kidding right? One week?
Damn the lighting on the train was great. I liked the soldier design very much. The city was so expansive and complex (the second city view from above with helicopters blew me away). The fluid was a cool effect, if a little rushed into place.

Frankly its better than 90% of anything in the scene.

Sometimes it's good to have a second, fresh look at something a few months afterwards - so here goes my thumb to the visuals. They've really deserved it.

Still: To whoever considers that sound track any good: You should really consider your "Get out more" yourself. It can only help.

guess one needs SLI and such if even a NVIDIA-Demobox doesnt compute it.!!

but having seen it on the biggy @BP08 moves me in a position where i can rate it finally.!

i love the trains in the beginning but think theres that mismatch-error all-over...one feels that its a mixup of different stuff.! everything is very polished and the musiC is better than KB wants to tell us (when heard via Headphones and shot through a mixer ;) ) and fitting it.!!
