Holy poop! This was cool!!!

Traction prods always feature some nice "mathematical" type effects, but rarely do they have any sort of consistancy/design/theme/whatever. Instead it's more of a case of here's one thing, here's the next thing, etc..

But this was the complete opposite. And it's fantastic, dammit! Plus they still managed to squeeze in a couple of 2D images into the 64K'er.

Loved it from start to finish.

I fully agree with "thom", I really enjoyed every TRACTION demo, and this intro is brilliant ! Traction demos always brings us something new, and this intro is full of new interesting things and scenes.

Very good work guys I really like this intro!!!!

reminds me quite a lot on bypass*s "kardiogramm", but much more content and somehow more "sophisticated". preacher, zou simplz rock!

Contrary to what preacher says in the info file, this does not run on win32, right? (64bit only?) If so, please recompile. :)

Tomaes, I haven't had any problems running it on win2k/xp. Once I get home from the partyplace, I can upload a version for win95/98, but I can't guarantee that they work because I don't have anything to test them on..

Very cool. I was beginning to fear that they left the trademark out of it but there it was, in the end. :) I love the Traction-style, keep it up guys.

Ooooh, it got a thumb down from shane, that means that it rules even MORE than I thought it did.

Just, really, really solidly good. And not dark. It's good to see demos that have a solid white basis, not black.
one word...stunning! :)

Thanks for the nice comments and votes, next time we'll place in the top three ;) There was supposed to be Fiat Voluntas Tua in the 4k compo, but my HD crashed and it got postponed :) Wait for it at some other party.

I don't have the latest source base at home, so I can't compile a win95 version yet.. wait for it tomorrow or something.

as apposed to the other traction stuff i remember seeing (i hardly ever remember things i see after a little while) this one doesn't suffer from the "one good scene, one bad scene" syndrome, and that makes the whole difference. this one totally rocked!

This was my favourite in the compo! Unlike most of the contributions in the demo compos, this one has a clever storyline and a very unified visual design. The soundtrack fits it's minimalistic style very well. Deep house music, clean form language and a philosophical approach to micro and macro. Great work!

I'm not a big fan of the minimalistic graphical style, but no group pulls it of as smoothly as Traction. The music rocked, as well as the baby face texture generator. And to my amazement the intro ran even on my crappy Linux laptop with a stock Debian wine :)

Well, either I did not understand the message of the demo or it is way too alternative for me. Whatever be the answer, I find lack of synchro kind of surprising. Still, grab a piggy for something different than a rotating cube.

very delicate ideas, I've got a feeling that all traction demos/intros are inspired by the incoming knowledge from various classical topics of mathematics and informatics.

Haha... when I watched this, first I thought it was an ambient VectorObjectShow, then I realized what was actually going on... and then (not having read the documentation, naturally) I thought "You know, those ID people are gonna hate this". And then there was the Monolith from 2001. Excepting that, and the music, this was really cool. Plus, the Linux version worked fine on Ubuntu 5.10 with all the latest trimmings. Thank you.

(I don't think the music had quite enough... weight? power? bombast? to match the story.)

Ah, one of my favourite intros! From big bang to megacity in 64 kbs; nice ideas and beautiful design throughout. Great job, Preacher!

Very nice effects and quite a lot of them!
However, the music absolutely ruins it for me - dull, duller, dullest!

Possibly one of the best Mac demos ever, even if just a port... Very stylish.

And I forgot to give it a thumb. The music is incredible and really adds to the atmosphere. When the jelly-fish pulse, or it zooms out to the universe... I love it.

I think that's the intro which made me contact Preacher. And it still stands as one of the most beautiful 64k intros to grace the planet to date.

I tried to run some mac demos and they came as .app which I can run. But this one is an exe and when I click it opens as a txt file. Might be simple, but I am not familiar with mac and can't find something on the internet right now (I get how to run windows exe with simulator on mac, not a supposedly mac osx demo that is exe)
added on the 2012-10-04 21:11:09 by Optimus Optimus
I realized it was supposed to be run with wine simulator :P
added on the 2012-10-05 09:08:06 by Optimus Optimus
IIRC the ports are supposed to be run from the command line, but they won't work on modern Macs anyway because they're compiled for the PowerPC processors and the later operating systems (10.7 and onwards) have dropped the support for emulating those.

So so soothing, the soundtrack sets such a nice mood. Kinda expected the spooky version to invert the colours, other than that it was a nice addition.

However I feel a bit like v3nom does, it's one ace demo - and pretty splendid you squeezed it all into 64k - but somehow this won't really click with me for some reason.

Nonetheless a lovely demo, that's worth watching a couple of times - just to enjoy the ideas - and to read poetry without seeing words.
rulez added on the 2013-05-25 17:18:49 by mog mog
The spooky mode, iirc, only changes the background color. It was an accident at first but I thought it was funny so I left it in as an option. I've had alternate options in other demos like 2019 as well, I wonder if anyone's ever tried them...

Squeezing this into 64k was no trouble at all, because kkrunchy was/is excellent and there's not much code or data. The hardest part was, believe it or not, to get the damned blinking medusae to blink properly. Minifmod had no proper way to set the time, so I had to do it by hand I think that just making the three blink properly took something like an hour or so when I was tired and finishing this at the partyplace.

I think that this is something that has stood the time, even though my lack of skill and expertise really does show here. The flowers, while really nice, don't really belong in this, and the leap from flowers to skyscrapers is a bit contrived.

The name comes from an excellent book book that everyone should read. I already started making Fiat Lux, but that got put on hold. Maybe some day...

Where are the gay italian cars?
rulez added on the 2013-12-30 22:49:46 by T$ T$
I guess the name was invented some Saturday night at the parking lot, where the Traction guys were comparing their tuned Toyotas and some wannabe with his lame-ass Italian car tried to burn some rubber.

I hadn't watched this before and now that I have I must say Preacher's later prods (especially muoto) make a lot sense. The ambient-esque effects were interesting enough while the smooth transitions kept the whole flow together. A sudden change to darkness was a good choice.

The Mac version doesn't have anything to make it run.. just a windows exe file! :?
It should run on PPC macs if you run it from the console. The ports are outdated though and don't run on Intel stuff IIRC, but feel free to take the source and fix them ;)
added on the 2014-05-18 22:18:33 by Preacher Preacher
nice!
rulez added on the 2015-05-28 11:55:49 by bonefish bonefish
The files included with the "OSX port" are a joke. A Windows executable file is included. Despite what Preacher says, Windows executable files will not run on Mac, PPC or not, no matter where you run them from. A UNIX executable file would, but that's not what is included in the package. Also, if it's only supposed to run on PPC Macs, please remove the "OSX Intel" indicator from the listing.

On the plus side, the music is included as a separate file, so I guess I can just listen to that...
added on the 2015-05-28 14:23:12 by Arkholt Arkholt
I have no relationship with the ports nor did I make them, but I do remember running this on my MBP some years ago. The .exe is not a windows executable (easily checked by viewing it, it contains a shell script and some packed data). I don't know why waffle named the file like that.
