unfortunately there is only one thumb per user
this is so fukcing great i'm like still trying to get my jaws off the floor.
you can't do just brilliant visuals combined with the uber-smooth soundtrack in just 4k
that's not fair

.. alright, where did you hide the rest of the 60k used in this 4k demo? :D
Awesome stuff, blew me away in the compo and still impresses the shit out of me back home.

It's brilliant! Very well done.
Yep, UNBELIEVABLE is the right word to describe this 4k. It`s the first 4k i have seen that looks and feels like a 64k. It even have good direction and design.
I simply cannot find words to fully describe what I think of this masterpiece. This is likely the most impressive production I have seen since my sceneactivity started 14 years ago! Simply amazing Frenetic.
this is not possible. for once i actually do not belive my own eye's
INSANE
O__O
I wonder where this had placed in the 64k compo if people hadn't known it is 4k. I was like dropping two jaws at the compo, as one wasn't enough.
d3dx9_24.dll not found :?
win2000 sp4 dx9.0c
win2000 sp4 dx9.0c
Well, it worked out with this
dll pack. To the infinity, and BEYOND 8)

unbelievable, insane etc...
Ooh is this for real!? =D
Killer 4k. Respect.
frenetic: afaik these dlls aren't available in the current directx distrib but only in the sdk (and redistribution of them is forbidden). Also i'm still wondering if using gm.dls is fair or not.

As for the prod... FUUUUCK!

Incredible, major ownage at the bigscreen
masterpiece! as for it using gm.dls i don't see a problem with that, it comes with the OS just as much as wave output or directx.
Five years ago this would have been one of the best 64Ks ever. Dude, you just broke Moore's Law.
you gotta be kidding.. this could just as well be a 64k-intro. insane.
about the dll-stuff, d3dx as a dll will be included in the next redist if it isn't already, i see no problem with it. d3dx will be a .dll in all future versions, so feel free to use it. the same goes for gm.dls, it's a part of the system nowdays. if it helps you to do even better intros, why not use it?

awesome effort. my only objection is that the music could have been a bit more melodic. but the technical side is great.
Just cummed on the keyboard! You dirty hacker!
Oh my god, sorry, that's too great. I cannot say more.. awesome \o_O/
just great great stuff. rocked. too bad I can't run it, I seem to remember that the synth rocked too.
Now I know why they delayed the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy movie for so long, they wanted you to do it in 4k first :D
Scariest thing I ever seen, I've never see so many adults cry infront of a bigscreen before!

stunned!
My god, that's impressive.
Yikes.. !!!
but now the critics: Does it use software rendering? My monitor seems too big to hide the individual pixels.

sick. plain SICK. Can we have your babies now?
holy SHIIIIIIIT, what really impresses me is the background nebulas ... jesus christ ! more !
was good but didnt manage to amaze me. -_- sorry.
4k's are now mature demos. respect!
omg we're soooooooooo pwned :D
congrats dudes and huge respect!

Very impressive!
Oh, and it seems to need ADMINISTRATOR rights to run. Try that if it doesn't work for you!
didnt work needs some d3d file.
"spheres" ;))
the music was even better than in the original :)
oops, but it is gm :((
others say what I'd say better
impressive
holly shit
Nice 3 MB demo, great visuals and music too, so you got '+' for three times and a really big '-' for fairplay ... :( No thumb-down 'coz the result is much better than i ever dereamt about it :)))
is said for me: these extra stuffs aren't part of the operating system nowadays...
Also use of gm is unfair to the whore ... If everyone knows and will use it rather doing his own softsynth with hard work...
Btw. The _demo itself_ is a good one and deserve full of my respect.

The kings of the 4k intro realm still lknow how to please.
It's so amazing I can't find words.... When d3dx moved into a dll I never thought that anyone would be able to throw in a couple of shaders and make this in only 4k. I can't even imagine what you will come up with on BP06...
KAi: no, it runs with a simple guest account (win xp sp1).
This one sets the foundations for a new generation of 4k intros, with the post-processed gm.dls samples and the use of the external d9dx. Amazment ahead.

Thank you frenetic!
good galaxy model! very inspiring :) the backgrounds are fascinating. for the rest the atmospheres and lighting are nice. sometimes the planet textures look crappy tho. but it's small (and cheated) so it's cool!
It's very beautiful but there's something I don't understand. Really. 4k intros should be stand-alone 4k with 4k effects coded in what you want (ASM, C,...). This is the purpose of a 4k intro. So, if this intro uses external libraries, it has nothing to do with 4k. The 4k is not able to process something alone.
It's like if you ask 1.5 Mb music in tracked music compo while authorizing the use of a software sampler without samples limitation or the use of VSTi.
I don't thumb up for this even if I think it's a really nice creation.

Code:
The 4k is not able to process something alone.
This isn't msdos or amiga and co., there's no single windows program able to process something worth mentioning without accessing the system dlls (mostly because the hardware is almost never the same, so layers are required between applications and components).
There's only one criteria: is the dlls part of that os distribution freshly installed by standard joe ?
Actually the d3dx dll isn't provided yet, it's only shipped with the sdk i've seen, but there's no reasons why it wouldn't be included with the end user's directx distrib soon.
it is included in the most current d3d retail runtime which is, right now, only being distributed with the sdk.
criminally insane
Great!
Really good, but I hope it doesn't use the RenderPlanetWithBumpAndMidiMusicInTheBackground() API in that directx dll....
Oh my... fukc. This is brilliant. Amazing synth and textures.
Just impressive!!
Amazing!
pretty pretty.
Most beautifull 4k ever! Gonna watch this again at home cause here it was slow. (Possibly with this DLL I finally downloaded, emulates it through software? They mustn't have PS2.0 here but I have at home)
And then I wonder. Is a 4kb demo really a 4kb demo when DLLs are used? And then again, even the older 4ks and 64ks I have watched, use external stuff from the system. Just wondering, a matter for discussion. Blah ;P

Very nice work indeed.
Concerning the dll discussion:
If you count the dlls used into the filesize, then we never saw any demo, 64k or 4k for windows. I think the times when we controlled the hardware ourselves are gone. Today the capabilities of a computer system are defined by its operating system, and how easy you can access its api. So stop whinig already :)

Not original in the least, but technically... *wow*
wow !
the nice thing is that when there was a pricegiving ceremony and all winners in 4KB compo came on the stage there was no place left :) about 20 ppl or so :)
Usually the space-trip demos are boring. Simple geometry, calm music, etc. So it's quite difficult to make on of these to look interesting... And Parsec does it in a superb way.
About the dll stuff... It is supposed be standard in the future, but the fact is that when this prod was release it wasn't. Anyway, I'm happy the BP orgas accepted it so we all could enjoy it.
Keep rocking the scene

this was fucking insane.
great coding effort! i still cannot really get used to shadered demos, too much aliasing for my taste...
btw: here's another download link for the missing dll: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/delphi-dx9sdk/Clootie_DX92_dlls.zip?download

You sick fuckers-
I second stonda. THIS is really heavy stuff.
!
good.
Beautiful.
this is not my cup of tea so i consider this demo a little bit boring, but i respect the art and code behind this prod
fucking insane indeed
Neat, very neat indeed, although I was expecting somehow a bigger step towards 4k's developement since seeing 'micropolis'. Anyways 2/3 thumb up.
Wow! Good music, great visuals, decent length... If only I had a Pixelshaders 2 card so I could watch the real version instead of that video...
It really does feel more like a 64k intro than a 4k. Amazing.
It really does feel more like a 64k intro than a 4k. Amazing.
Not 100% fair, I guess, since it seems to use a lot of external MS stuff which is not supposed to be necessarily included in a standard config -- I think. But still brilliant.
Well, most of you miss the point concerning the size: "Windows" is NOT some piece of hardware, its a platform - including a complete GM synth, predefined fonts and ressources, large APIs including "CreateTeapot" and other stuff ;)
Adding not-yet standard DLLs is a bit fuzzy, but so are all those cabdroppers... The only thing which sucks is the XP-only 4k version. But since this prod would still look good as a 64k, its worth a thump up anyway ;)
(now I only wonder about how it is made - these interpolation artifacts make me curious ;)

There is absolutely no discussion needed about this. They're only the first who SAY that gm.dls has been used.
Coders: Know your OS.
Rest: Enjoy the show (and all that stuff that came with your freaking bloated XP CD).
If you start gm.dls discussion, you can also hate this intro for being CreateSphere, add fractal, apply a shader. It IS great, it TAKES your breath and every prod like this definitely is a step forward.
Damn, thumbs exhaustet...

This is clearly the best-looking and best-sounding 4K intro to date. Using external stuff is a fair part of the game, so no complaints here.
marvellous
Just TOO beautiful
'fair' or not this was definately impressive.
Quote:

yeah, that's why i made a native windows .exe last year...
beautiful 4k for XP. i think that there is all fair with dlls, because they are a part of latest directx.
although using a lot of external stuff this is still a f*#in bomb!
Just awesome :).
great! and it would be better than beyond even if it was 64k ;)
i like the smooth look... it's awsome ^^
blala: and that's why that doesnt work and this still does? ;)
Finaly got the dll so I could watch this and I'm impressed- excellent work for a 4k I haven't seen too many 64 k's that match this - cheers for the design
As the others have said: great visuals and a nice sounding soft synth for 4k. Looked even better on the big screen. The intro is dead boring though (although the short length helps) and the music is sub-par. Anyway, good work.
Good stuff :)
Amazing prod for 4k, especially the sound!
'beyond expectations' ;)
Honestly one of my worst "how the fu*k do they get this in 4K" moments..
oh man, this is great stuff
For all those who say that creating something on windows without referencing external DLLs ist not possible... I remember a great old 4k intro called omniscent, was a dos prod if I remember correctly. Look it up and see what actually CAN be done in 4K without external help.

Omniscent only ran on my PC when i had Descent installed.
Yup, Gargaj, but why can´t you program something like omniscent which runs in a commandline-window under windows? Sure, you don´t get all those pretty effects for free, but that´s because they aren´t for free, they use external dlls which take up a lot of space!
Zplex,it runs without any problems sans Descent ;-)

it's called hardware acceleration and try to get that without external libs.
APIs are one thing, external data is a personal peeve. I guess I'm just a silly purist or something. This thing uses post-processed GM sounds? Interesting, but I'm still not so sure...
At any rate, visuals are impressive.

jackknife: because it's 2005 and I want to use the hardware available? :)
excellent all scene!!
respekt.

nothing more than a texgen and a pixelshader program in 4k but still looks pretty nice.
can't say it impressed me much tho
can't say it impressed me much tho
Totally fucked up my Windows. I heard the music but didn't see any graphics. After I forcefully killed the process my HDD-light just kept on blinking and blinking. Until I gave up and restarted the whole thing.
It tried to allocate WAY more memory than I had. Pfftage. Also MIDI is an easy way out when doing musax. :P
WOW
entropia:
so you're down-thumbing your own computer !? btw. midi sound and post-processed midi samples are two different things...

bahu: life is cruel but so am i.
Perhaps the most beautiful 4k I've ever seen.
best 4k ever!
best 4k so far ...
finally got it working. very pretty prod, but kinda slow on my radeon9700 for no appearent reason
nice.
this one uses an external dll, wich isnt installed with one current OS, so it doesn't respect the rulez.
skarab: maybe you should read the bp05 rules...
and btw: every windows 4k uses dlls

bahu, that's right...
but the dll we are talking about is (more or less sadly) a non standard dll, and is not included in the standard end user directx runtime (i am talking about the one with the webinstaller, the SDK redist includes the latest d3dx files, and the SDK redist _only_ includes the current d3dx9_XX.dll /!\ ) up to now.

Waiting for a final version!
@las: i know that you're talking about d3dx... but at first: that was allowed by the rules. there's no reason to blame contributions only due to the fact that they make things that are ok with the rules. second: if you read some dx mailinglists you'll recognize that d3dx and its shipment is a common problem, not only for demoscene.
don't blame contributions for being rule compliant - enjoy them and learn from them...

GREAT!!
Great stuff. Really had me stunned. No matter SDK dlls ...
Amazing.
...rulz.
what needs to be said already has been
Textures in 4k. Excellent.
in several respects, i can't approve of its software quality.
(evil pe dropping, bad alt-tab handling, use of external dlls, etc.)
even if those failings are counted, it's still impressive.

This has moved 4ks to a new level of beauty. I just can't get enough of those amazing backgrounds.
my god. Best 4kb I've ever owned.
Adore the Visuals... Planets and Universe rocks always, so i cannot give less than a Thumb up
I actually went out and upgraded my gfx card to see this live. Best 4k I've seen so far.
haven't i voted on this yet? 4k's have come a long way since 10 years ago. more importantly, 4k *programming* has come a long way since 10 years ago. we all just have to get over the fact that software library calls have replaced hardware calls.
Looks nice but is much too boring. Music is extremely boring as well. Definitely not something I'd watch a 2nd time. Didn't impress me at all. Having to download an external dll sucks as well.
very cool 4k. BUT... using d3dx is one thing, using samples from gm.dls is just plain wrong though imho

A perfect 4k demonstration.
this still looks a shitload better than any other 4k on the pc (imo). and that includes all the other 4ks using the same dlls. it even sounds better than pretty much any other 4k. ouch.
best 4k i've ever seen in my entire life.
best ever!
awfully nice!
the bumpmapping, the tune, the overall mightiness.
the bumpmapping, the tune, the overall mightiness.
Speachless!
the above comment and this 4k leave me speechless.
astronomical :)
I thought Micropolis was amazing, but this o_O. This looks more like a good 64k intro.
best 4k ever

Oops, forgot the thumb.
just great...!
This is very nice stuff. The fact that it's done in 4k is the icing on the cake.
How come I have never voted for this?

Up to now it is the best 4k I have ever seen. If you take a look at the 4096 Byte in a hex editor of your choice it is simply unbelievable that all this beauty is somewhere in this few bytes.
Unbelievable, how the hell, etc...

Mindblowing 4k, great work!

wow
w0t, no rules from me yet.. 4k Milestone!
Size for the good!
unbelievable 4k!
Very nice indeed. By the way, I'm sure there is no texture generator on this prod ;) gm.dls......
This was and still is a killer!
technically very cool yes, but boring.
This is still brilliant and in my opinion the best 4k-intro ever done so far.
boring but nice.
Just a black screen with the proper DLL installed.
Could be my Gforce 7600 GS
Could be my Gforce 7600 GS
I second Smash wholeheartedly. Two and a half years after its release, this is still the only 4k so far that actually looks really good in its own right, even when you don't consider that it's a 4k.
Hey, all you 4k makers out there! Pull yourself together now! Beat this!! ;)

WoW!
i'm on my knees. mimetics 4k, duh...
Great 4k!
great ... IMHO the first one which made use of external DLLs, eh!?
impressive stuff.
Totally and utterly awesome. A demo in 4k! <3
wow, I'm really really impressed!
that was really cool
I've forget thumb here
Another thumb
Say what you want, but after 3 years (or 5 years in Mojo's case) this one and Mojo Dreams are STILL the benchmark for 4ks. Atrium comes a close third, featuring the best music of the top three...
Stunning.
Deserved its all time top.
Deserved its all time top.
what. the. fuck.
o.o
still damn impressive
I can't believe what I saw.

I forgot to thumb this great production up. Features great music and really cool visuals!
great.
How did I not thumb this one - awesome visuals
thumb down for incompatible 4k version and leaving a file on disk, double thumb up for direction and result
I think the textures definitely lacks precision, but the result is still very entertaining. The blind effect especially is great.
..... cant believe i didnt thumb this up yet.. bad me!
art
awesome
Forgot my thumb :)
As a lot of people have already said: I can't belive I haven't thumbed this yet.

outstanding.

Beautiful 4k :)

Oh yes!
wonderful
4k? wtf
real great one, i did miss so far
real great one, i did miss so far
I think this prod deserves more recognition. In my opinion it was the one that single-handedly kickstarted the modern era of 4k demos—the moment they started actually looking and sounding good and competing with the 1999-2004 era 64k intros in that regard, which was previously unthinkable. The moment it was released Crinkler was still several months away, and the groundbreaking demos like Atrium and Receptor won't be released for 3+ more years. It was definitely a good decision to release it at Breakpoint, because this prod was the actual breakpoint.
Groundbreaker.
wow.
Impressive

I see you got some inspiration from the art of Greg Martin as well :)
I did the exact same scene for Beyond as the bottom left in the screenshot, but then it was thrown out.
But now i feel embarrassed cause some of the scenes looked better in this one... :)
