Before you dl and go beserk over fps etc. This prod was created in Blitz Basic, it uses no 3d accelerated stuff at all no external libraries etc. Just plain old hand coded effects. The file size is a result of BB being a piss poor compiler... :) Other than that ... enjoy the show!

A mix of a very nice effects with some decent effects. Overall I enjoyed the show, as always anything with an Amiga feel to it is more pleasant to watch. The music sounds very early 90`s which is a welcome break from the majority of todays demos soundtracks.

i would have liked to see more pastel colours over the dark theme though. (please next time go pastel!) :)

the fire effects deserve a thumb up alone!

This demo was a lot better than I expected! The effects were very simple, but still nice for software rendering in basic.

Consider this: the oldschool coders had to get fast effects in limited hardware, so you have to get fast effects in limited software. The framerate is fine here, but the attitude is wrong.

s_tec, you're right on the money with your comment. Thanks, this demo has in fact achieved the highest average rating of any Blitz 2D demos over at the Blitzcoder website.

The guys that voted on it there aren't scene guys but they are people who realise how difficult it is to get the frame rate fast with B2D because they use it themselves.

I think it's an odd juxtaposition to have a software limited speed problem rather than hardware.

The peeps that have thumbed it down for being slow should know that you can effectively say that a B2D application will run at least 4 - 8 times slower than it's C counterpart.

Thumbing this down for requiring a modest PC is kind of like thumbing down a product written for the Amiga or GBA or something, it's a bit ignorant.

The oldschool style is by choice but this prod was by no means rushed, it took me nearly a month to code it.

@Codeman, sorry for the MAV, A small number of other people have experienced it but it should be ok on most systems.

for a cool blitzbasic demo watch 'hallo ik ben een schaap en dit is mijn avontuur' software rendering and full frame rate on amiga! :P

wham: soo.. your excuse for having low fps is actually to say that it isn't 3d-accellerated and that it's "hand coded in blitz basic"..?

stop using blitz basic and you'll get all the framerate you want.

excusing a prod for being slow by saying "but it's just because it's coded in an inferior language with an inferior compiler" is just plain stupid.
sucks added on the 2005-01-22 18:49:45 by gloom gloom
I don't know what all the fuzz is about. I get absolutely acceptable fps on my slow-ass box, the old effects look ok to me. It's an mediocre oldschool effects slideshow made in blitzbasic.

I don't even believe that. Unless the compiler is really sucky that is.

this is not bad at all

@gloom I didn't make that comment as an excuse for anything. Actually the fps is fine, but some people will complain about anything and I was merely stating the facts associated with the demo. That's all. Yeah and if was coded in pure asm it would be really tiny and fast and if was coded in blah blah blah it would be this or that.. but it ain't. It's an old skoolish thing coded in a language made for game creation. Take it for what it is. Like it or don't, no probs with that.
And I can see the point of folks who code in c++ or asm who think that the exe is too big and it might run too slow or whatever 'cause they are used to thatype of product.
The people who have coded in BB 2d however realize what a feat it was to code that fire effect and get the framerate that it has. Just look at the comments at BlitzCoder forum. Anyway for those who didn't like it cheers for looking anyway. And constructive criticism will hopefully lead to better stuff in the future. =)

At first when I came here I was a little bit upset at some of the comments, now the sting has gone out I'm starting to appreciate the honesty, there's not many places that you can count on it.

You're certainly spurring me on to make a more scene worthy prod!

Thanks for the comments, even the thumb downs!

Perhaps you need to attach little text tags written in broken English to all the objects as they move round to get a good score?
I liked the swirly round circle of fiery balls.

"The people who have coded in BB 2d however realize what a feat it was to code that fire effect and get the framerate that it has. Just look at the comments at BlitzCoder forum."

I used to code in BB and I know from experience that with writepixelfast and the bank commands you only have a small disadvantage over someone coding in a proper language. The people at blitzcoder will be in awe of stuff like this because they're people who code 2d games in basic and probably haven't got a clue about coding effects.

"The peeps that have thumbed it down for being slow should know that you can effectively say that a B2D application will run at least 4 - 8 times slower than it's C counterpart."

If you _really_ believe that then why on earth do you use it?
liked it :)

Not that bad. Could have been a really great demo on a 386. Shame it's 2005. Ever heard about c++? Fire and bump rule.

Is it 2005 already? Holy shit! Thanks for the tip. :) C++ is that a new vitamin ? Nah never heard of it!
After all I'm still stuck in the eighties, this fookin time machine never seems to work right when ya need it. Anyway cheers for dl and watching!

Made me feel like watching a demo from 1994. Both in a good and a bad way.. with mostly leaning on the good. Why not switch into a real programming language and produce kickass demo stuff instead? :)

Cheers. :-)
Working on a few more modern effects at the moment, the next one will be more up to date!

the fire effect is outstanding!

though the global demo failed as a demo for my selfish tastes (1999 is aready oldschool for me ;) i would prefer to see such effects in cracktros :)

I loved this demo; especially the fire.

blitz basic doesn't excuse this ugly music, does it !!?
added on the 2007-03-12 14:02:33 by sokoban sokoban
Both, the demo and music are utterly boring. I liked the burning sphere though. :) But why is there a Memory Access Violation if I want to start it in windowed mode?
