Hey, I can see it here! (does these computers at the university finally have 3d acceleration?) It works, it's fast, less than 1kb running from inside the zip without bugs (does it have a dropper or not?). Effect is great, balls are soooooo smooth!!! Excelent =)

not at all the first opengl-effect in less than 1k as the nfo states. not too good either, but certanly not bad. hope to see a 4k from you soon, tho ;)

Actually this fx might be compatible with other computers than the one it was coded on (contrary to the other ogl effect i've seen around which is not), that was the main point. I admit the effect in itself is quite simple (but nice imho :).

I'd like to know how to make compatible intros in few size and OpenGL without any problems. Many 4kb intros with droppers don't work always, I hate that, and I still prefer software rendered DOS stuff just for that. I would like perhaps to read a tutorial about coding OpenGL in asm, without dirty tricks, stuff that work. Where can I find one?
added on the 2004-03-16 14:22:42 by Optimus Optimus
This one is using dirty tricks :) But not *too* dirty.
Basically i modified the unpacker of upx and i've "dropped" dropper because of incompatibilities with the PE file i'm using (the structure of the file is coded by hand so i could remove all the unnecessary datas). The obvious trick to avoid at all costs is to import the functions by ordinal, while it will make the file smaller it will surely not work under other versions of the imported dlls (like the other ogl file i've seen around). The complete control of the file permits to schedule the asm instructions to obtain the best packing ratio.
Another trick i've used, which seems to work correctly, is to use the gap between 1k and the 4k page boundary to store datas (used with base pointer), to reduce the size of the addressing modes.
There's some other tricks aswell, just search. ;)
Apparently, the fx is working under windows 9x/2000/xp.

small, fast, smooth, high resolution... and as far as I know the first true Windows 1k in the database.
It seems to nicely fill the gap between 4k and 256b.

There is a lot of stuff in a small space here. True, there is not much on screen, but Windows and OGL take a lot of overhead. It's nice to see that the overhead can be packed into less than 1K, leaving some room for a simple effect.

you needn't be so worried about ordinal importing. com-dropping itself already makes the intro less compatible (eg. it won't run from a cd). so the way to go is to release both a tiny optimized version and a safe 'unoptimized' exe.
rulez added on the 2004-03-18 15:52:39 by Ger Ger
Gem: i never thought about running it from a cd (or a dvd) but you are right, even if this can easily be fixed without any space loss (or maybe 1 byte at worst but this can be gained again). Do you see (or have you seen) any other cases where it might not be compatible ? (i don't)
I do not agree with the ordinal importing stuff, name imports is the bare minimum, just try to run the other ogl example laying around (http://www.pouet.net/prod.php?which=3843) on anything else than windows98.
Including the exe in the release archive is a good advice, thanks.

H: if you drop the file to the current directory, it does not run from a cd, it you drop it to c:\, it fails under certain network conditions.

Upi made both a 98-only version (512b) and an xp-friendly one (larger), the latter runs well here. It's included in Hugi 24.
added on the 2004-03-23 18:27:17 by Ger Ger
I'm well aware of that, but running from a cd or from a network is very marginal, ie. it doesn't hurt to copy a 1k file onto a hd (here, cds are mainly meant for archiving, btw).

Upi's framework is highly incompatible anyway (it is the one that has been used for the 512bytes effect which is here on pouet), do you know what it remembers me ? Amiga demos that made direct jumps to irq handlers inside the v1.2 roms, when 1.3 came none of them worked, bad luck.
To create a version of an effect for each system out there because of using dirty hacks is simply a waste of time (mainly because there's great chance for the effect to not to work on the next coming windows update), but you can still amuse yourself for a while by thinking you made something that is working on *your* computer.

512bytes effects are good for dos, not for windows, simply because *even* if you can create a compatible framework that runs fine under 512 bytes, there's not enough of these bytes left to show off a descent effect (get your hands a windows 9x and check throb's effect, u'll see what i mean, the sceenshot that is shown in pouet is a little bit *non contractual* ;) ).

i don't see what's so impressive about doing an OGL demo in 1k... utilizing OGL is just some function calls where doing this without OGL in software would require much more work. no thumb up for using OGL in 1k and no thumb up for this - rather lame - effect sorry

Hmm. Dunno ... Sounds like it was pretty tricky to code but the result does not look so impressive, even for 1k. Also seems to mess up all icons, here (XP/SP2).
