OOooooh nice. I get that same "perfectly smooth except for the regular stutter". All the other little applets on the page do the same. All the other applets also rule btw, especially that x.y disting scroller.

Yep, I'm aware of this stutter:
To prevent a weird memory leak that occured with Java's MemoryImageSource & early Netscape versions (before 2000, when a lot of people still used it), we used to call the garbage collector every 50 or 100 frames, which was quite a bad thing.
Without this weird trick, Netscape used to monopolize all system's resources and screw it up in the end.
It worked quite well and the stuttering was less noticable at the time. However, with current browsers & JVMs, this trick has become useless and leads to jerky animations.
I'll try to update those old applets sometime soon to have it removed. Most of them also have a timer/synchronization problem by the way.

Nice gfx, great, cozy tune and amazing applet-code.
I was very amazed back in the days when I saw it for the first time. Copied the applets off-line to watch them on my CRT (you know that "internet connection" from back in the days).
