it's technically impressive, and even it's not "stylish" in a way you might understand it, it's still far more an eyecandy than "adrenalin".

aeg told me stuff about their engine. i like this one and the fact, that the place in the demo exists for real. great work, and yep, a real eyecandy.

it was boring. might be nice from the coders-point of view, but i don't get why it became first.

(anyone eble to get a screenshot? won't work here, even with d3d debug enabled)

Yeah, have to second dalezy somehow. Nice visualisation of a city I'd never want to live in, but nothing more. The code as well as the music and the whole concept just felt too much like a copy of Adrenalin. And the kasparov joke at the beginning isn't enough to raise my thumb, sorry.

After Adrenalin and this I vote for a 'demo' modelling an airport. Or a dentist's office. Can't wait for Evoke 2004!

The question really is: what makes a demo a good one. Does it have to be flashy and entertaining or can it just live up to be a demostration of the group's abilities? The demo imho worked very well as a demonstration and therefore rules.
rulez added on the 2003-08-25 17:27:15 by Paralax Paralax
i think adrenalin was sufficient as a demonstration that aeg can model million-polygon-scenes and the smash engine can display them, thank you very much.

yes guys, you must be right. how could a demo like this win the compo... seems nobody voted for demo ;)
message to those guys who are only able to give stupid comments like "this sucks.. thumb down" : you might have another opinion about "what shall a demo look like" than us in smash-designs but do you slam on demos that we dislike ?
contructive critics are welcome each time but not such stupid comments.

Should have use your power making sumthing less boring than a 3D flyby. Smash design seems stuck in flybys but i keep hope that one day they'll do somthing watchable, with correct music and a bit more than engine code...

Nice modelling...and HELL of a work when AEG showed me like 1000000000 fotos he did in his city for getting info about all looks and scenes of it!!
The engine displays it well and is surely known since 'adrenalin'...although it might look as an 'easy and simple 3d flybye only demo' it was definitely _more_ than that when working on it for _sure_ ;-)

Fazit: Nice work over all !!

nice scene viewer.
unimpressive stylewise.
(some action, e.g. opening the garage door in the beginning or some wind in the trees.)

unimpressive from a technical view.
the reflections were just so wrong and ruined so overall impression.
(marmor reflects like window-glass ? 100% ? even when far away ? it's minor, but it makes the whole thing artificial....)

argh. apart from the large effort to create the scenery identical to some real life place this is about the most miserable thing ive seen for a long time.. I bet all those 3d artists of the 90s that loved to make chairs, tables and fireplaces with lowpoly sword over will love this 3d extravaganza. Id rather have something featuring the brain of an artist rather than that of a city planner..

Work put on the modelling.

[-]
-No effects, uninteresting.
-Reflections (!).
-Camera paths: just as horrible as the reflections, sorry.
-That kasparov scene was a cheap joke. Well... at least it had nothing to do with matrix.
-The fonts.
-The Music
-Adrenalin was waaay better, and that's about a year and a half ago. ¿Where's the progression?

Don't blame SD for winning, blame the people who vote for this/didn't vote :)

i'm not a fan of this kind of demo either.
content-wise this looks too much like a company-presentation with some "demo-elements" badly added.
i'm wondering whether this should be considered as a demo at all...
finally this feels more like a benchmark - and reminds me to get a new machine ;)

I don't get it. Adrenalin was nice not only because of the modeling, but the "childhood-memories" factor and animated rides. This is pretty much static, and although well modelled, the choice of elements (ie. plain buildings) is pretty dull. Not very fun to watch, but I did at least appreciate the models.
Adrenalin is acctually much more worse 3dmodelling wise than this one is..

This has really great cadded scenes it seems (looks like professionals from the houseselling industry) but..

Lacks:
* Proper lightning (get yourself a radiosity plugin or do some realtime math)
* Proper keyframing for camera (maybe some spline for the target aswell?)
* A theme that makes any sense (learn from kasparov, you tried to diss it, with a scene that wasnt 2% of what kasparov was, and kasparov was .. 99 or something?)
* Music that cant/hasnt be done in a 4k
* Quality materials (just look at that envmap.. fucking ugly, same goes for the flat feeling of some of the unlitted houses :)

as a demo this sucks, as a groupwork from school with a coder and a cad design class this wuld give you a high grade i guess... in elementary school...

sucks added on the 2003-08-26 04:46:41 by Hatikvah Hatikvah
kudos for the big efforts of modelling. too bad the texture quality can't cope with it.

this is the most sterile demo i have ever seen. there's nothing fancy about it and nothing that makes me puke. after seeing it, i have almost forgot that i saw it. so no thumb down since it doesn't hurt.

A direct attack to the Kasparov. This demo is far away from the quality and the style of Elitegroup.

brave new world... but so sterile... and do something with those envmaps.
it is good for an engine tech-demo, a benchmark, an ad for a CAD program, a "come'n'live here" ad for soon-to-be-built flats, but somehow seems too empty to be a great demo...

I confess I'm a real sucker for huge 3d flybys. I loved Adrenalin and, while I do happen to agree with much of Stefan's criticism, I do find this demo, its pace and its music very appealing.

Agreed, it's not even close to the quality of Kasparov, but the same can be said about almost all subsequent flyby demos.

Crashed halfway through with corrupt screen (winxp, p4 1.8, gf4mx, 512mb)

What I saw was not great tho. Sure, impressive modelling, but it's not hard to do with a bit of practice and real models / photos to work from! And yes, envmaps sucked big time! Materials in general looked like they were limited perhaps more by the engine... how about controlling the envmap on the shiny walls with an alpha layer to give a bit more realism?

Also, it ran very slow on some parts (mainly where there were trees + the flare effect together) - probably my shitty gfx card.

i won't thumb it down, cause I've only seen half, and the amount of work put in was certainly impressive, plus I enjoyed the tune a bit.

I have uploaded a bugfixed version on scene.org. ftp://ftp.scene.org/pub/parties/2003/evoke03/demo/smash_weltenkonstrukt_bugfixed.zip

In that version you can also press "space" and fly around in the city (control: awsd/mouse, shift for more speed). For the ones who said, the demo crashes after the first half: Can you please download the latest gfx-card driver and tell me if that fixes the problem? tnx

On the bright side, the music is better than adrenalin. Still no decent graphics to speak of. Some artist help poor aeg out!

Anyway, aeg has a bright future in civil engineering and architectural modeling, but not demo design. The envmaps on the windows, cheezy as they are, were a nice touch, but there should be more mipmapping/blurring/fading/whatever for the far-distance objects, to add a little more realism. Think Lapsuus. :) Oh, took hell of a long time to load too.

Some INSANE amount of work on the modelling, but what's with the rest?

- Fucked up bigtime in D3D-Debug... The render-to-texture parts flickered in a nice green/magenta color-combo. (Actually I didn't notice it first because it kinda fit... >:)
- The fonts are at LEAST not Times New Roman, but instead of bilinear-artifacts, we now get polygonized Courier New which sucks BADLY without antialias (as the whole demo does)
- Picking on Kasparov is not a good idea, please keep in mind that Kasparov had stuff like musicsync, mood, proper design, ideas...
- The music is nearly the same as in Adreanalin... I mean, check the samples. It wasn't that impressive in Adrenalin either, but at least there's no yelling this time, and and it's _somewhat_ synchronized now... (Still it's very very few.)
- The cameras move too fast to see the details, and way too fast compared to the music. And in some cases there are very ugly jumps as well.
- Zero design. I mean you have a well modelled city, and you show the greets jumping in white? I mean DAMN!

Look. You made this demo. You saw this a couple of times I guess... Didn't you notice that it's simply NOT FUN?
I mean, these models had a lot of potential. Add some motion, like cars or something, add some "story", play around with the lights, add some logic into the camera, synchronize to the music, add some progression to the whole demo, or whatever, just MAKE IT FUN for the poor viewer...

I _really_ hope I was constructive enough.

I won't thumb it down or up. Let's wait for the next one.

Hm. that's strange. can you tell me your gfx-card and dx and driver version?

- Picking on Kasparov is not a good idea, please keep in mind that Kasparov had stuff like musicsync, mood, proper design, ideas...

aehm, well - agreed ;)

- The music is nearly the same as in Adreanalin... I mean, check the samples.

well that's simply a matter of taste. some like it, some don't. it's a very similar style, yes

- The cameras move too fast to see the details, and way too fast compared to the music. And in some cases there are very ugly jumps as well.

what do you mean with ugly jumps?

"Look. You made this demo. You saw this a couple of times I guess... Didn't you notice that it's simply NOT FUN?"

well, a bit ;) this is similar to the fr-demo. we were also asked by xxx to release a demo. some smash-members (btw smash designs != visual imagination - although a few smash-members work for visual imagination - smash doesn't want to go commercial) were working on a tech-demo which xxx had seen and persuaded us to use that for a demo. we didn't have a lot time and made out of it what you've seen. i mean demo-parties are no "demo"-parties without demos, right? is it really better to not release a demo on a small party, if it's not "perfect" in some sense? it won the compo, so some people might have enjoyed it. and if the demo only hit the mood at that party a bit, it's ok, isn't it? we are still in the demo-scene for fun. on pouet i often get the impression that demos that are not interesting to everybody shouldn't be released. I like to see lots of releases :) and the really amazing demos are anyway more on the big-parties...

"I _really_ hope I was constructive enough."

wonderful

added on the 2003-08-28 19:09:38 by soney soney
I really think people are being too hard on this demo, just as they were with Adrenalin. There are much simpler, much slower and generally far inferior demos of this type that get a lot of praise only because they have contemporary design or music, or a few artistic alpha layers over the top. Maybe this is something SD should try, if only to please the masses.

Indeed, there are areas where this demo could be made more appealing for the viewer, but the complexity of the 3d scenes and the sheer amount of effort involved in this demo deserves a lot more respect than is being given.
added on the 2003-08-28 20:27:39 by Wade Wade
You can criticize the work without criticizing its authors.

Let's just say that the pleasure I get from a demo is absolutly not linked to the amount of sweat produced by its creator in its making.

nice break from the usual "ohsodesignedwithoutanycontent" stuffs (like chimera, or predator). yeah, some design, better lighting, and a more dynamic world wouldnt have hurt, but still... i like it.

ps: no errors in the debug output here (except at exit... but thats still better than most of the demos out there)

- The music is nearly the same as in Adreanalin... I mean, check the samples.
well that's simply a matter of taste. some like it, some don't. it's a very similar style, yes

What I meant it has the same samples/synth sounds as Adrenalin.

what do you mean with ugly jumps?
In some cases, the camera does this huge "jitter" or something.

About the releasing: I'm perfectly OK with the fact that you released, because felt that you want to release something, that's usual for most people I guess. But what I meant is that most of the stuff are really just glitches, what can be fixed by simply adjusting stuff a bit.
What I felt was that I was sad about this demo because the models had so many potential in them you could have made a "demo of the year" with these, but it just wasn't used well.

reptile: IMHO "content" doesn't equal to "amount of models and textures", content is a sum of good code, good gfx, good music, good editing, etc. Predator may not feature a mega-3D-engine, but I enjoyed it very much since it kept my attention awake with the flow.

Funny thing tho', Chimera reminds me of the fact that most demos look much different on a bigscreen/PA, with that, even Chimera worked out on BP, so maybe this is the case with this demo as well.
Unfortunately I only have this monitor and speakers. :)

Wow, I finally managed to run a Smash Designs PC demo without any problems. Too bad it was a flyby, with static scenes and mediocre music, nice modelling but totally without life..

Even though it is static I still find it interesting to watch.

the modelling was tight, but that city is just sooo ugly. it looks like a place in my hometown which people refer to as 'roderbronx'.
also the tune was quite distracting. :7

Pheraps a more soft tune would have been better. Great modeling effort, i guess.

Well, what is wrong with it except the music?

I really like a lot of Smash Design's demos... but this particular demo is the most boring thing I've ever watched. I'm very sorry to thumb this down, because obviously there was a lot of work involved... but in contrast to Adrenalin this work didNt amount to anything.

It´s a miracle: Even today those houses look better than over 90% of other cityscapes in demos. And yet even today this demo loads slower than 90% of other releases.
